Upon returning home from a friend's funeral, high school teacher Mike Wells finds himself implicated in the death of the supervisor who recently suspended him. Knowing he didn't kill his boss, Mike sets out to find out who did. He is assisted by his best friend and former tank crewmember, Tommy, in looking into who was actually behind this murder. While suspended, Mike discovers his sister had been on the receiving end of an abusive marriage for the past twenty years. This doesn't sit well with him and he feels the need to fulfill his role as big brother in this matter. While assisting a local private investigator, Mike also gets involved in the search for several missing teenage girls. With the clock is racing to find these girls and Mike must also remain ahead of the police's investigations of him.
Do not judge a book by its cover; this is not a war story. I found this story suspenseful and the characters rough but relatable. It is a quick read and I enjoyed it and recommend it.
