Parents in some backwater town are feeding their kids to the Wytches (weird, tree-inhabiting creatures) for Horror Reasons – will our protagonist, Some Kid, survive and who can he trust?

After a three year break since the first book, Scott Snyder, Jock and Matt Hollingsworth are back for the next chapter in their dismal series, Wytches, with Bad Egg. The only thing horrific about this Halloween Special is how horrifically boring it is!

Like most of Snyder’s comics these days, it’s insanely overwritten with Some Kid spouting some of the most contrived, unconvincing inner speechifying you’ll ever have the misfortune to trudge through. The book’s subtitle is cringingly and artlessly shoved into the feeble plot, the concepts of Wytches and their procurers haven’t suddenly become compelling and the terminology is still dumb. I can’t take anyone saying “high horn” remotely seriously!

The horror isn’t scary, the story is uninteresting – the two boys race toy cars while waiting for Horror Stuff to happen and that’s their miserable storyline - and predictable – gee, wonder if Some Kid’s mate is doomed?! Colourist Matt Hollingsworth still thinks he’s Jackson Pollock, splattering the page with colour blots and obscuring Jock’s unremarkable art in the process – brilliant! The splatters hide the Wytches’ reveal, which might be intentional to some degree, but was still annoying. I just hate the visuals on this title.

Apparently Some Kid will play a role in the second Wytches arc due next year hence this largely unnecessary Halloween Special. Not that it matters anyway as I’m abandoning this series after this terrible comic has confirmed that I don’t care about any of this at all! Scott Snyder continues his downwards spiral of near-unreadable comics – a Bad Egg indeed. And, like any bad egg, this one stinks!

This was pretty good!

Snyder, when not doing exposition dumps, can make a really fun story. Wytches was good but not great. I actually think Bad Egg Halloween special is better. It's the story of a hunter of wytches in a way, and with his mom, he must befriend a family and do what must be done. It's not a brand new story idea but it's well executed and a ton of fun. Some of the art filter still annoys me but I was back into this world pretty fast. A 4 out of 5.

Man, these guys don't hold back. WYTCHES returns with a bruuuutal short tale, one that is both more and less engaging than the initial volume. On the one hand, it does great work deepening the mythology of the wytches and this world. On the other, it's not as shocking as the first volume (even as it still achieves some shocking and frightening moments) in its spookiness. Still, a great All Hallows Read.

What was I thinking? Why did I bother with this book? I didn't even really liked vol.1 for chrissakes!

I dunno. Maybe I wanted to give one last chance to Snyder. But nah. The guy's spent and isn't on his way to recovery.

Sebastian, 12 yo, is from a family of Wytch hunters. He hunts families of Wytch familiars who feed their kids to newborn Wytch babies.
And it's boring as shit.

The 12 yo speaking like 3 times his age got old on me after a few pages. The hard-ass mother might as well be called Sarah Connor but I've seen that movie already and the best friend had so much "victim" written all over him I wanted to warn him. His parents were so onctuously ominous it was laughable. Not to mention the mother with an eye-patch! This one wins the cake!

I suppose I should have been thrilled, maybe even scared, but I was too busy thinking about my tax declaration while reading the book.

Art-wise Jock is still on ugly autopilot while Matt Hollingsworth is again color blind and pours blotches of shitty pastels all over the page for no particular reason.

Wytches season 2 will be without me.

I liked this one-shot/prequel/sequel-set-up more than the entire first volume of Wytches. I still have my issues with the execution of an otherwise great premise—Hollingsworth’s paint splatters are still obtrusive and annoying—but they’re also less prominent than in the original volume, which meant I could more easily get invested the story this time around.

While technically a prequel to Vol. 1, “Bad Egg” feels like a sequel in that it expands the world of “Wytches” in big, and thankfully, exciting ways that lay the groundwork for Vol. 2, planned for next year. Once again, the ideas Snyder works with are fascinating, as the underground Wytche-worshippers-versus-Wytche-hunters conflict is very cool and I’m eager to see it developed further.

The story this time around is more predictable than Vol. 1, but I also think this one is better executed. The characters are given room to breathe, and the slow, methodical pacing helped me get more invested in our main character than I ever could in Vol. 1. The finale was a bit lackluster—again, the paint splatter obscures a lot of the action and imagery, and while I get what it’s trying to do, it just doesn’t work for me—but I still enjoyed reading it and feel genuinely excited about reading Vol. 2 whenever it comes out.

Excellent addition to the Wytches canon. I am very excited to see how this wraps into the next main arc.

I was glad to see there was another Wytches edition out that I could read to hold me over until the ever promised second arc of this story is released. This halloween special was released in 2018 though and still no word on a release date for volume 2.

This story introduces us to Sebastian and his mom Clara who are Wytch hunters and will appear in the next volume alongside the original MC from volume 1, Sailor. I'm pretty excited to see where this story goes! I didn't love this installment as much as Volume 1 but I think it was pretty good for being so short and the double twist at the end really got me.

Still 100% recommend for lovers of horror. Horror in graphic novel/comic form takes the grotesque and scary aspects to a whole new level!

While the story itself being told is nothing I haven't heard countless times over in one way or another, it's still a great time to be back in Snyder's world of WYTCHES. A boy realizes he's part of a line of wytch hunters and that his and his mom's next targets just happen to be the parents of his best friend. STAR CROSSED! Ooopsy! But there are a couple twists along the way to keep things moving and the artwork / coloring is pretty dope. Had a good time and really REALLY want this world to keep expanding because I just know they can do some really cool things given the chance.

This set before the first volume of Wytches but also introduces characters that will appear in the second volume. I really liked that, if felt organic in its structure and added to the mythology of Wytches seamlessly. The writing is even better than the first volume and the story was engrossing, I’m really looking forward to the next volume now and I have very high hopes.

This came out in October 2018, but I just got around to reading it. Man, do I miss this series and Scott Snyder promised this would pick back up this year. This is a prequel to the first story arc of Wytches, and I absolutely loved it. Explains a lot, and we'll be seeing Sebastian in the second story arc.

Single issue/one-shot/special/whatever of the year. This special reminded me just how much I missed this series and just how good the Snyder/Jock creative duo truly is.

I stumbled across this and really must check out the rest of the series. Highly enjoyable, a mixture of supernatural shenanigans and reflections on childhood and friendship. Jock's versatile artwork is excellent, wavering between clear lines of realism and psychedelic paint fests when the Magick and monsters kick in.

Solid without being amazing. A little predictable and the ending could have been better. The artwork is still weird and confusing. I guess that's the state of mind they want you in.

Don't Play With Your Food

This is a sort of prequel, sequel, place holder, one-shot for a larger Wytches arc that was and will be. I'm not familiar with all of that, but read and enjoyed this as the one-shot it was. There's plenty of exposition and explaining, even among people who already know or should know what's being explained, but if you don't mind that sort of thing this was good fun.

There's solid pencil work that's then colored with slapdash impressionistic strokes so the whole project has a modern, graffiti like look that sometimes works with the story and sometimes doesn't. The story is a creatures-among-us Lovecraft sort of tale with monster hunters and monster collaborators. Two boys from different sides form a friendship and all of the tension turns on who's going to walk away in one piece.

The action built up well, there were a few nice touches, and a few twists. I wasn't captivated, and don't need to track down the other arcs, but this struck me as a fine read.

(Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

A prequel to Wytches about a kid and his mom who are wytch hunters. Wytches are very different than your traditional witches and I'm here for it. I thought this was really good. Snyder promises it will tie into vol. 2 if that ever actually happens. He promised it to us soon back in 2019 and it's still not out so we'll see if it ever actually happens. It's a real shame because I like what Snyder and Jock have done up to this point. I just hate what Matt Hollingsworth was doing with the coloring. It's got all these lens flares on each page like it's a J.J. Abrams movie. It completely distracts from the art.

MARATÓN HALLOWEENESCO 2023

Parte 8

WYTCHES: BAD EGG HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

Scott Snyder

** 2.0 **

After Vol. 1 this book takes us deeper into Wytches lore and explores different sides of the conflict (without going into spoilers).

Same as in the previous incarnation, there were some weak plot points and characters, perhaps somewhat weaker than Volume 1.

But for me, the atmosphere takes the cake and eclipses any shortcomings. Long twilights and memories of youth... it clearly shows that this comic is personal to Snyder, and his back-of-the-book letters discuss this in greater depth.

Hoping that Volume 2 will take off... some time in the next few years.

I'd forgotten about this one, having decided it was done a while back, so a neat surprise to find in my comics pull box. as usual wonderful stuff, and the fear or being betrayed by those we trust while young has stuck around with me ever since watching Invasion From Mars in 1986. So that's a soft subtle spot for terror, deep and cerebral, chittering at the periphery of our adult fears for our children, waiting to be fed.

It has been awhile since I read the first volume of Wytches, so I was worried that I would be lost with this special. However, Snyder does an excellent job of retelling the lore of the world through the narrative of the protagonist. Reading my review of the first volume, I had trouble following the artwork at times. With Bad Egg, I did not have those issues. The artwork was excellent, and I never felt lost by what was on the page. Overall, this was a solid stand alone story.

The whole Wytches series is soo good!
I read it all in one evening. Especially this special issue and the letter from the author in the back touched me.
It is about friendship and this magical time when you grow from a kid into a teenager. The friendships that form you. The figuring out. The laughs the cries, everything.
I know what he means and I felt it in the story.
This. This is the kind of horror I love.

CScott schnyders Wytches series is just absolutely excellent stuff. This is the Halloween special prequel to vol 1 - if u have kids, makesure you read the afterword - Schnyder talks about his kids fears and inevitable coming of age and also of his own fears and about leaving the magic ladr metween childhood and adolecent behind.... It's very strong stuff!

The perfect read for Halloween weekend. Snyder expands the world of the series and enriches the lore, all while introducing fully fleshed out characters and a plot that continually surprises every time you think it’s taking a familiar path. Not to mention some of the most striking and unique art in modern comics.

Now hurry the hell up with arc 2!

A nice little prequel to volume 1. You could read this before reading Vol 1, if you wanted. It wouldn't spoil anything. In fact, it actually explains exactly what wytches are, unlike the first volume.

A fantastic return to one of my favorite horror universes as of late. It's such a unique twist on witch lore, and this one-shot only adds to the world Scott Snyder is building.
