I Write Artist Statements

Rate this book
This delightful little paperback consists of humorously inventive fictionalized artist statements. The recent explosion of interest in academic art programs around the world has led to a dramatic increase in overwritten, hyperbolic artist statements. I Write Artist Statements skewers popular art school clichés while describing impossible projects that simply could not exist off of the printed page.

You don't need to know anything about writing or artist statements in order to enjoy this book.
Have you ever visited a museum, read one of those paragraphs on the wall describing a piece of art, and felt immediately heartbroken or embarrassed because you totally didn't see what the artist wanted you to see? On the flip side, maybe you've felt an overwhelming rush of "YES YES YES" because you felt completely connected to the artist's message. Those words on the wall are a type of artist statement, and they can totally change the way we think about the art or affirm how we feel, depending on the way they are written. Liz Sales writes these things for a living, and she invites us to break the tension of the (oft-pretentious) art of writing artist statements with a tongue-in-cheek view of her own occupation. She had me laughing out loud from the very beginning. Now I feel less heartbroken and embarrassed, and more enlightened - thanks for inviting me into your mind, Sales :)
