Drowning

Rate this book

I thought walking away was the hardest thing I'd ever do, but walking back feels harder.

As soon as I graduated, I ran away from my hometown. Ran away from my crazy religious parents, ran away from the judgment, and ran away from what I couldn't accept about myself. And all of that wouldn't be so bad... if I hadn't also run away from my best friend.

But now I'm forced by circumstance to come back. And I'm terrified. Because I made a lot of mistakes in leaving, some of the worst mistakes of my life. I don't know if I've grown up enough to face them. I don't know if I can face Amy.

Or, even worse, if she doesn't forgive me... I don't know if I can survive walking away again.

Nobody has ever made me feel as good and as bad as she does.

I've never been as close to anyone as I was to Jessica. But she just left when I was at my most vulnerable. She did worse than that, in fact. There are things I don't know if I can forgive, things I never planned to forgive.

And then she just waltzes back into my life unexpectedly I'm supposed to just forgive her? What if I don't want to forgive her? But that's the problem, I do want to forgive her. I want to have her as my best friend again... and so much more.

But I'm terrified of what is going to happen if I allow myself to love her again.

DNF'ed at chapter 3. Yes let's change the main characters backstory between chapters. It went from her parents having tragically died (her words, not mine) and her living with her overbearing aunt. Then we went to the other girls pov who was also raised by her aunt, except she didn't give a shit about her. By chapter three the first girl is going back home to her religious parents. I'm sorry, didn't you just say that they died like a few pages ago???? And yeah i triple checked if i was just getting confused, but no, that genuinely happened. Wasn’t there an editor??? If there was then fire their ass. Also it was just so cringey. That opening break up? I wanted to die

Not steamy. It had two sex scenes, but that doesn't really make a book steamy. The characters were pretty unlikable. Time-frame way too large, so the book skipped around to cover a big story but didn't actually deliver that. The actual book ended around 70% and the final 30% was an excerpt for another book. And that was five chapters long. It's not cool! Very disappointed.

No character or plot development whatsoever. Their relationships and interactions plateaued and jumped, plateaued and jumped with no smooth flow or development. The plot was super quick which was frustrating and didn’t ring true, even for a relatively short book.

Some massive formatting and editing issues with the kindle edition. Random letters and punctuation marks all over the place.

Okay. Needs a little more.

This story had a solid plot line, good character arcs, compelling conflict, and decent character development. What it lacked however, was editing, pacing, and story development. Those issues sort of made it hard to finish. The first half of the book everything is awful constantly. The second half everything was fantastic. There are no side characters, just protagonist, love interest, antagonist. Side characters would have helped round out this story. The bones for a good book are definitely there, but it reads like a first draft.
I'll probably read more from this author as time goes on though, there's enough potential here I'm guess their later books will be better.

Confused about this book

Definitely not steamy and a bit disappointing. I'm pretty sure that it's a different book to that in the description.

2 Stars might be kind, but good lord there’s a serious lack of WLW stories out there and it only took part of an afternoon to read. That being said, I’ll go back to my ff if this is my alternate.

At one point I seriously questioned if I had opened a different book - parents went from tragically killed to a drug addict mother and an absent father?

How we go from not seeing our parents and not agreeing with their overly religious (but seriously lacking) Christian values and awful 1950’s housewife of a mom that has no ambitions for herself and admits to only being married for appearances, because it’s “what you’re supposed to do”and a father that’s non-communicative, unappreciative, and distant - to living with them again? Did you have absolutely no friends in the entire city that you lived for a minimum of 3 years that you could turn to? Were you really looking for a job - there’s plenty out there to tie you over until a job in your field becomes available… Whether she admits it or not, she was living out her parents life in her former relationship - loveless, noncommunicative, living together for convenience, and only the male figure worked to sustain their household.

The story had so many time jumps it felt incomplete in each fragment. The idea is there, but not enough time was really given to forge out a plot. Reads more like “I romanticize what it must be like to be in a lesbian relationship and pine for one, but I’ve never been in one.” Oh, and misleading - if that’s what people are calling steamy, oof. Oof again, I’m sorry but you’re missing out on what’s really out there to consume and be had.

Former best friends, driven apart by one of them who felt deeply ashamed about a kiss she really liked, are good candidates for a nice HEA. Unfortunately the plot is filled with a large number of major life events: angry confrontation about the past, getting back together, coming out to conservative parents, getting married, getting pregnant. The story arc bounces from one to the next in an effort to fit them all in without taking the time to flesh out the events in a meaningful way.

There are also a number of extremely confusing typos with multiple bits of words sort of jumbled together. Some of these cannot really be parsed into anything sensible so the reader just has to skip ahead to the next complete sentence. This is a little distracting.

DNF after 2.5 chapters. If you’re going to change the main character’s backstory in such a major way, at least have the decency to go back and rewrite the first chapter. The change is so major that it left me with zero trust that other things would just change. Felt like being gaslit. Also the to lead characters, who presumably will get together, were so toxic that I really didn’t care and didn’t want to waste any more time with them.

Good story but terrible editing

I loved the characters and the story was really heart warming, because I really love strong, independent female characters. But beside the obvious typos, and wrong names, some paragraphs were so garbled that they really needed to be deciphered.
So that's the only reason for the four stars, otherwise it would be a five.

Sometimes relationship does not have a place to settle down.

Finding out her boyfriend kicks her out and then having her parents kick her out drives a young woman into the arms of the "enemy ". Whether the mom likes it or not. Short story of two former friends signing a peace treaty and living H.E.A. Enjoy!

I enjoyed the plot, but the pacing was INSANELY fast. I wouldn’t really say it was *steamy* but to each their own. I really wish the author had done more editing as the book becomes near impossible to read due to spelling errors and masses of garbled text that somehow was thrown in with the rest of the story.

How many drafts did this go through before publication? The writing is simple and amateur. Thankfully, the book was a free download. Save your time and read The Price of Salt, instead.

To the author: Keep practicing and publish less until your craft is actually honed. My advice, learn the subtle arts of revision and structure.

skip it

I hate to give bad reviews because I know how hard it is to write a novel… But this is as much a train wreck as if you tripped a marching band down a really steep hill. It’s full of typos, horrible teenage angst, the same scenario told over and over from different points of view, a hurried plot and insipid characters.

Brilliant storyline

I loved the story as I’m sure this is a fairly common way for people’s lives to go. Or at least the teenagers denying their true identities.

It was amazing to read how it could turn out.

A proofreader would be good to have take a look at the story before publishing but the story is great.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed reading this story, spicy and sweet. I'm sure you'll like it too despite a couple of typos and ortographic errors. The first book I read from this author and I'm starting my second.....I like spicy romance!!!

This was a nice read but it was really confusing at times. I feel like the progression in the story could've been a bit better. For example, the characters could've been developed a bit more rather than skimmed through at the start.
Other than than, the plot wasn't too bad.

Good story

Story was good, and a quick read but it definitely needs a lot of editing. Wasn't particularly steamy either and I felt like a lot was missed when you didn't get to read about her first time.

Love it

Great book. Lots of spice. Starts out with best friends but later in life, they become lovers who end up getting married and having a baby. Makes you happy but sad at the same time but I loved this book. I definitely enjoyed it and I wish there was a 2nd one.

Big editing problems a couple paragraphs were not readable. Huge jump for forgiving, for what?, finally learn, then the book is ending. Not Steamy.

I liked the book and I was very happy to see that two childhood besties reunited after years apart and were able to make a life together. Very best, Robin

The storyline was confusing. And the editing was worst. It wasn’t spicy — just a few lines of some “scenes” that wasn’t even descriptive. It was rushed and character development was none.

While this book tries to be emotional there is no emotion in it. Also I don't think they used spell check as every other page just had a paragraph of gibberish and most pages had at least a couple spelling mistakes, making it a difficult read.

Second chance to try

“A few minutes could make or break your life.”

Its a very cute, entertaining book but everything seems to happen in like warp speed... Would've loved if the author developed & expounded on the characters & the narrative more. But it was still an enjoyable read.
