Zac Gorman is an author and cartoonist from Michigan. He received an Emmy for his work on Over the Garden Wall (Outstanding Animated Series, 2015) and was nominated for an Annie Award for his character design work on Welcome to the Wayne.
For some reason, his webcomic Magical Game Time was archived by the Library of Congress.
Rick and Morty, in comic form, continue their universe hopping adventures. This 300+ page covers the first bunch of stories in the Rick and Morty comics.
For anyone looking for more Rick and Morty, this is the best place to start. It is as close to the show as you can get without just watching the show. The writing is good, the stories are interesting and the artwork is great. It goes between longer stories across multiple issues and single issues stories that feel right at home in Rick and Morty. All the main members of the family appear, though Beth is the only one not to get any real time to shine.
While it is a good comic book and good continuation of the show, there is really no big moments like the show has because nothing in the comics can really effect the show. There are moments presented as bigger in the compendium, but nothing major that hits as deep as the show itself can. It is really just for someone looking for more Rick and Morty, rather than a jumping on point.
It's just Rick and Morty (particularly written in the style of season 4/5) but in comic form. There are a lot of interesting premises in there but a few are boring, typically the more wordy a writer is the more boring their comic is. I really like how they let them draw the characters in their own style rather than have it look strictly like the show (really liked Ryan Hill and Zac Gorman's style of drawing). CJ Cannon really does a good job of laying the foundation for the look of the comics, balancing giving the comics its own distinct look while also having it stay close to the show. Overall on par with the main show for quality (I'm someone who likes seasons 4 and 5 so take that as you will)
This was really good. I read a Rick and Morty book before (Rick's New Hat) and I really disliked it. The story was confusing and I couldn't really read the comics the same way I would watch the show, but this book was very different. When I was reading all the comics in this compendium, I felt like I was reading the lines in the characters voices. If anyone is a fan of Rick and Morty and also enjoys comics, I would highly suggest on giving this a shot. I would recommend this book. I ended up staying up till 4:30am reading it.
The writing on this series is absolutely horrible. It just seems like the laziest scenarios with no attempt at any world building. Did the writer even care to try? Or was he trying to show his disdain for the original concept of the show? I’ll never know, but what I do know for sure is that I will not be reading any further into this series. I would’ve given it a 0/5 stars, but that’s unfortunately impossible with the Goodreads system.
