Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Bear went on to star in Discovery Channel's Emmy nominated Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor TV series, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet. Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over £2.5million for children around the world. In recognition of his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to 28 million Scouts worldwide, awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy, and has authored 10 books, including To My Sons.

I'm tagging "isekai" because it has a LOT of the trademarks of a classic isekai (except Truck-kun):
- suddenly in another place without any understanding of how the Main Character got there
- wise* guide on the other side who helps the MC manage in the other world
- probably magic**
- if the MC gets to go back, it's just as confusing how, and the MC will often have a souvenir as proof it wasn't just a dream

It's overall a fun story with some helpful tips, YES, including if one runs across a bear (I didn't tag *Bear* as bear). The book misses the third one, though:

How to act if bears attack (when you go in their space): Black - FIGHT BACK (image of punching a bear); Brown - LAY DOWN (image of person lying down); White - GOOD NIGHT (image of coffin)

What bothers me is it's not as clear as it could be with the rappelling tips in particular; this would be much better suited as a graphic novel or animated (or... live-action) series. There... might be one? I haven't looked—literally just found this in a free library (after leaving donations of my own!) and thought I'd take a peek. Definitely a good read, among the better random picks I've made!

*arguable, in the case of Konosuba

**I imagine it's for illustrative purposes, the "wear the right clothing for the environment" bit, but Bear exploring the wilderness and REALLY pulling out an entire girl's wardrobe just for Lily? after RANDOMLY coming across her?

My students love these books, so I decided to read one also and now understand why they are so popular. We bought the entire twelve book set, and the books are constantly on the move. They read quick, but keep the reader engaged. The books also teach adventure lessons by simply adding details into the story at the appropriate time. They also teach lesson such as not being afraid to speak up especially when the information is beneficial to the team. Another advantage is that they are written using a font called OpenDyslexic making the books available for more readers.

Another great Bear adventure with another great lesson!

We LOVE the Bear Grylls books! A lot like Magic Tree House they are fun fiction combined with nonfiction information. In the Bear Grylls adventures the children have not only a personal challenge to overcome but also an environmental one, learning survival skills along the way!

My 8 year old son and I read this together and it was a great book for the age range, full of great wilderness tips as well. We both enjoyed it but did groan at the predictable ending. He gives it 3 stars based on that but we will read more in this series as they are different.

This was a great read. We enjoyed learning about climbing, what you can forage, and signs that it will rain. It also has great social emotional skills and morals at the heart of the story.

A middle grade series of books about kids learning to work through their personal fears using outdoor solutions. My kiddos got me addicted to these books last month and I wish there were more! Lots of great info in each book not just about basic survival, but about being in the world.
