This book is the start of a new series and kicks off with a beloved character from the Core series fans fell in love with, Vlad Aristov. Vlad is a big Russian ex hit man with a weird sense of humor and speaks of himself in the third person. Even with a past full of death and violence he still has a huge heart and just wanted to love, be loved and have a family.

As I was reading this, it took a bit to get used to the change of “scenery”. What I mean by that is its not Core agents chasing down serial killers or psychopaths. It a group of guys that run a repo/repair shop which is how Vlad meets his leading lady as he was tasked with “repoing” her car.

Lucy Spencer was an interesting character. She is a school teacher but she is also a woman in hiding from her twisted, murdering cult family. As with everyone when they first meet Vlad she doesn't quite know what to make of him but its not long after she knew she wanted to help him with his English and to have a summer fling with him.

The suspense starts to ramp up towards the middle of book and at a climatic scene in the book I had to laugh because my brain when THERE is the sick and twisted mind of the author I know and love.

As this the first book we are introduced to some new characters that will be part of Mechanics & Mayhem series along with having some familiar faces from the Core series. I loved that Vlad finally got his HEA. Bonus was getting a sneak peak at the next two books in the series at the end..

I have been waiting for Vlad’s story for years. He deserves some lovin’ and I was not disappointed!

Kristine Mason is a master storyteller and supplies plenty of humor with the thrills and chills of Vlad. I have been eagerly anticipating a story about Vlad and I was not disappointed.

I was laughing from the opening page.

Vlad is a giant of a man, built like a wrestler and tame as a pussy cat, unless…I’m not sure he will make it as a repo man and neither are his friends. It’s hard to believe he is such a pushover for the pretty school teacher, when you find out he was an enforcer, a hitman, an assassin. His friend, Harry, was his savior and there are very few that know his secret. He is not only hiding from the Russian Mafia, but the US government would love to get their hands on him too. But, he’s not the only one with secrets.

Lucy, the school teacher, whose car he was repossessing, has secrets too. Her paranoia and distrust of people is for a very good reason. She grew up in a cult, and ran away when she was seventeen. She is hiding from her parents, who would love to get their hands on her and it’s not because they love her. Quite the opposite, in fact. She loves her new life and doesn’t want anything to change it. But, she has a clock ticking in the back of her mind…3 years. Three years before the shit hits the fan and someone would die. She doesn’t believe in Fate, but I think there is a romance coming and Vlad is her man. She does have a best friend, so let me introduce you to her.

Paige is quite the character, a free spirit with pink hair. She is Lucy’s one and only friend, though she doesn’t know her secrets. When she meets Vlad, she encourages Lucy to go for it. And…she spies with her little eye someone she wouldn’t mind getting to know better. BUT, I think that is a story for another day. Her and Lucy may be opposites, but they make quite the pair and their dialogue is hilarious. I would love to be a fly on the wall and listen in…Oops, I am.

Vlad has a way of talking, fumbling, bumbling his way through the English language. He refers to himself in the third person. Some would think he is just a dumb brute, but, like a book, you can’t tell who he is by his cover. His dialogue had me laughing, with his misused words and funny sayings. Oh, did I forget to tell you, he did have a pet alligator, Polina, until it got too big and dangerous.

Vlad and Lucy hit it off right away and she lets her defenses down. The lively and creative banter between them is very entertaining. The wooing and cooing is lively and it is a good thing he is persistent.

“…baby-eating, giant repo man…”

WHOA! I can see him swinging that sledge hammer and it immediately made me think of Paul Bunyan.

Lucy has a secret farm, with a very big dog, Millie. When she came home and Millie greeted her, it made me laugh out loud. Kristine is so descriptive with her writing, she makes it easy to visualize the action. Her ‘pets’ have unique personalities and they love her. Besides Millie, she has some chickens, and a couple of llamas and fainting goats she rescued. I don’t know how many times I laughed at their antics. These are some special needs critters I think you would love to meet for yourself. Little does she know, but she has met the right people to help her, to keep her safe.

The critters. OMG. Millie makes me think of a Doberman that I used to have. When Lucy asks Millie to, “Give Mommy your Mean Millie face,” she draws her lips up into a snarl that looks like a smile. My Dobie used to do that and people really did think she was coming for them. Then, she says, “We still need to work on that, don’t we?” I love that I can smile and laugh through the story, even though I know danger and evil are coming. It’s the little things Kristine puts in her novels that make them so riveting and realistic.

Kristine Mason writes so descriptively, it is easy to picture them driving through the giant oaks, with the Spanish Moss hanging from them, towering over the street, creating a tunnel. I have driven through them. It is the bits and pieces like this that keep me coming back to Kristine for more and making her stories seem so real.

Her characters, they are to die for. I can see the ‘boys’ teasing Vlad and acting like a couple of six year olds, like the first graders Lucy teaches, sly sideways glances, hanging around when they should give them privacy.

“Well, I don’t exactly have a mean dog, but I do know a former bodyguard. I’m going to ditch the prissy clothes and give him a call. It’s time to meet the real Lucy Jean.”

Lots of humor. Even though it takes place over a short time span, the love seems slow burning and real as we get down to the nitty gritty. The sexual tension heats up the pages and I wonder how long it will take for him to wear her down. I have wanted a story about Vlad, ever since I first met him. He is such a sweetie, that he deserves his own love story, and now I have it. Kristine does have plenty of action and we had to go through some dangerous times and dangerous people to get here. I hated for his story to end, but Kristine has recurring characters in her novels and I know I will be seeing him, and Lucy, again.

Here’s another quote I loved, but, as this is not a finished product, any quotes may change:

“I think you broke my vagina.”

“It appears to work just fine. I will examine later to be sure.”

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Vlad by Kristine Mason.

FINALLY!!! I have been waiting for this book for years.Vlad has been my favorite and I wanted him to have his HEA.I anticipated what kind of woman he would fall in love with, a soft school teacher type or a kick ass don't mess with me type. Well he got a little of both. When he showed up in any book it was going to be a laugh out loud moment. In this book we have a very serious man who does not think he's good enough for a happy life. Many times I wanted to slap his friends upside the head and say leave him alone let him be happy. All that being said this book had a very different feel than the Core books. Yes I know new series new feel. It focused more on the love story than the suspense. Don't get me wrong the bad guys are still crazy good but I got Vlad's love story and that's what I've been waiting for.

***DISCLAIMER: I was given a special ARC book and was not paid to give my opinion***
Everyone’s favorite CORE character finally gets his own novel in Kristine’s newest series, Mechanics & Mayhem. The first novel follows Vlad, an ex-hitman hiding from the Russian Mafia in Tallahassee, Florida. While working at a garage, he meets Lucy Jean Spencer and he falls in love with her as he gets to know her. But Lucy Jean had a secret if her own, one she isn’t sure she is willing to let go.
I really enjoyed this novel. Every since I was introduced to Vlad, I enjoyed reading how he has adjusted to American life. Most of Kristine’s fans wanted to find out if he ever found someone to spend the rest of his life with. Although I missed not getting to see Polina with him, it was heartwarming to know she was still mentioned in the book. I also enjoyed the twists that were included as well. This novel left me on the edge of my seat and I cannot wait to read the next two books in the series (especially with the cliffhanger at the end of the book).

There isn't a book by Kristine Mason that I haven't loved and this book is no exception. Her writing just grabs a hold of you from the first page and keeps you captivated throughout the whole book. I would consider this book more romantic then a thriller but it still had enough suspense to keep you intrigued. This book is all about Vlad and all I can say is finally! You will have to read all her books to keep up with the characters in the books. This not a stand alone. I loved this book! It was a very fast read once you sit down and start it there is no way your not spending the day finishing. Loved it! Highly recommend Vlad and look forward to Jude and Sully the next books in this series. Keeping writing such great books Kristine Mason!

Kristine Mason has done it again, and this time it’s a special treat for C.O.R.E. fans. VLAD, a beloved character from earlier stories, is not the stereotypical millionaire bad boy that so many contemporary heroes are modeled after. Sure, he has a dark past and plenty of misfortune but also a childlike appeal and eternal optimism that makes you instantly admire him.

Lucille Jean Spencer is a beautiful, strong reclusive character whose paranoia is keeping her from living life to its fullest. The elementary school teacher is definitely not the type of woman VLAD goes for - or is she?

Both VLAD and Lucy are trying to stay one step ahead of a past that is constantly threatening to catch up with them. This story has it all... attraction, love, murder betrayal and maybe even something for you animal lovers out there.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Kristine Mason book without a side of sick and twisted thrown in for good measure. Let the Mayhem begin...

A former assassin and a school teacher fall in love - what could go wrong?

Vlad is a wanted man - by the Russian mob, the CIA, FBI and more. Lucy Jean is wanted as well - by her cult leader parents whom she helped send to prison.

Tempers flare when Vlad and Lucy Jean meet but after getting pushed together they find themselves in love.

They both have secrets that they don't want to share but when people around them are getting murdered they need to trust each other.

I have waited for Vlad's story and was not disappointed! ❤️ Vlad!

You could read this book as a stand alone but you won't really get to know and love Vlad if you haven't read the C.O.R.E series. Highly recommended

Author Christine Mason has done it again in her latest installment of Vlad.
Vlad Is everybody's favorite Russian he was intorduced a few books back in the C.O.R.E series. He was a Russian hitman for the mob. In this book Vlad is a repo man who repos Lucy a school teachers car . Lucy was raised in a cult by her parents who ran this cult. She met Vlad when he picked her car up. Vlad cares for her the second he layed eyes on her. He even went back to have her help him with his broken English. After helping the like each other and gave the dating thing a trail run. Lucy then finds out that her parents have been released from jail in reunite with her brother. Her parents set out to kill Lucy and anyone who stands in there way. Lucy lives a double life. She has an apartment but she also has a large farm with special needs animals. Lucy's parents end up finding her in Vlad on the farm when things go down. Glad knows everything about Lucy. Lucy does not know the whole truth about Vlad and his past. Lucy hired Vlad to be her bodyguard. He protects her because he loves her and she loves him. The parent come and the brother turns crazy. Vlad and Lucy get married. I can not wait to see what adventures Vlad and Lucy have in the future. This was a action packed and fast paced book. Well worth the read. GREAT JOB AGAIN

Awesome

Lucy is a schoolteacher and lives a reclusive life. Her parents were cult leaders and were sent to prison for tax evasion, with the help from Lucy. Vlad is a former Russian assassin and now works as a mechanic in a garage. He is an illegal citizen and tries to fly below the radar. When he and his buddy is sent to reposse Lucy’s car, she tells them it’s a mistake and takes the necessary papers. Lucy offers to tutor Vlad with his English but fall very fast for each other. When bodies start piling up, Lucy knows it’s her parents but the cops won’t listen. So Vlad becomes her bodyguard. Can Vlad keep the woman he has fallen for or will he lose her after she finds about his past?
Loved this story. Vlad with his broken English, Lucy tough with her fainting goats, llamas, and not so vicious, guard dog. A little steamy with crazy parents trying to kill her.

Kristine Mason brings us a new series and kicks it off with a bang by finally giving our beloved Russian ex-assassin a love of his own, Vlad is trying to live a "normal" life working in a garage as a repo man, fixing cars and making a new life for himself, its whilst doing this that he meets Lucy Jean, a school teacher with a very secret life of her own! AS with any horrible past it catches up with Lucy and in her delightfully twisted way Kristine has us turning the pages to see what happens next! Evil villians and catching mafia bosses! and a huge hint at who is to come next! What's not to love

What!

Ok, I'm gonna be honest, I didn't think I was going to finish this book. The stereotypical Russian "accent" Vlad used was nails-on-a-chalkboard for me. I thought to myself at one point, "It'd be smart to have Lucy tutor him in English since she's a teacher!" In the very next scene I read, Lucy brought up tutoring 😂 I'm so glad I decided to keep reading because I LOVED the Lucy and Vlad story! Also, besides the Russian accent thing, this author has an amazing way with words: she's quick-witted, descriptive without being flowery, and sets up suspenseful scenes artfully. I'll definitely look into her other novels/series.

Vlad, Vlad, Vlad.....a long awaited story that had to be told. Kristine Mason is not only an excellent writer, but a loyal writer to her fans. She listens to what her readers tell her about her twisted characters and delivers. Vlad is one of the examples of her paying attention to what her readers would like to read. We asked for Vlad’s story and got an amazing one! In the Kristine Mason fashion, we were taken on another adventure of thrilling suspense with a romantic story. A must read if you are looking for action, steaming love scenes and a little humor!

Vlad, Vlad, Vlad... I really enjoyed reading about him as a stand alone character. In this first book we learn more about Vlad’s up bringing and character. His personality comes out a bit more, with explanation of why he is the way he is. However, when an unexpected teacher’s vehicle has to be towed by him, he finds himself getting caught up in things he did in a past life. Will a love for a woman make Vlad do things he swore off, and swore he’d never do again, to protect her? Sometimes people change you for the better, and Vlad might have just met his match.

Vlad! OMG, I was so excited to finally get this story! Vlad is one of my most favorites and I’m so damn happy he was paired with a strong woman. Lucy Jean was a perfect fit and I do mean a perfect fit. She’s exactly who and what he needed. He broke my heart so many times and I’m just so dang happy for him. The story was solid and flowed at a great pace. And of course the bad guy(s) were what we’ve come to expect from this author. Great book and great start to a new series. I’m one happy girl!

Absolutely loved Vlad!!

I have to put VLAD at the top as one of my favorites of Kristine Mason’s books. He is a complex character and the author did a wonderful job of peeling away at his layers to show who Vlad really was. Lucy Spencer was a perfect match for my favorite former assassin. I loved her character!! I was also delighted over the animals on Lucy’s farm. VLAD is a definite must-read!

The writing style just did not work for me. I loved the premise, but poor execution. Lucy, Lucy, apple, juicy was all I could think when I was reading this story. Vlad was likable but the romance did not work for me. Dual POV. Writing lacked flow.
