Kathy is a born reader who as a child always had her nose in a book. That love of reading grew with her. She often would finish one book and immediately pick up another. She went from reading Bobbsey Twins to long, lush romance novels. One day she stumbled upon the Shining by Stephen King and was hooked. She turned her back on romance and became a serious Stephen King fan, reading every word he wrote. When she caught herself checking under the bed and looking in the closet for monsters or worse, she knew it was time to put down the horror stories and pick up the romance novels.
Her return to romance novels was short lived. She’d started law school and soon her reading was limited to legal opinions. Then one happy day her younger sister handed her a Harlequin romance. They were just what the doctor ordered. The books were short enough to read in a week and still get her required reading done. Best of all she knew there would be a happy ending and she wouldn’t have to search her room before she went to bed each night.
When her first child was born, she stopped practicing law to become a stay at home mom. Her second child followed nineteen months later. With two little ones in the house, reading suddenly became limited to Dr. Seuss and other children’s books. Any free time was spent trying to catch up on sleep or laundry.
All too soon her kids were attending pre-school two hours a day. She spent those few precious renewing her relationship with romance novels. After a while she felt the urge to write a book of her own and she began writing the stories she wanted to read. She spent many years writing some really terrible books and learning her craft. In 2014, Kathy participated in Brenda Novak’s online auction to raise money for a cure for Diabetes. She was the highest bidder for a critique by editor, Charles Griemsman. He did not buy that book immediately, but requested another which became her first book in the Sweet Briar Sweethearts series.

Dr. Rick Tyler is all about second chances, and moving to Sweet Briar with his son Bobby is proof of that. However, will Rick's attempt at second chances open his heart to love? Enter Charlotte Shields and Rick just might get that chance.

Charlotte and Rick have a past. At this point in Charlotte's life she is at a crossroads. She lost a position in her father's company that she was certain was hers. She is now vigorously searching for a job anywhere that is not Sweet Briar, North Carolina. However, when Rick shows up, after leaving her at the altar years previously, Charlotte needs to know whether not she can trust her heart - and Rick - again.

Now next-door neighbors and a chance to get it right - with a cute kid aalong for the ride - this sweet story proved an easy read and a nice addition to a series that I really am enjoying.

I love a good second chance

Kathy Douglass is a new author to me, and I purchased this book because of the brief blur after having read Rochelle A. new release.

I must say I am pleasantly surprised and enjoyed Charlotte and Rick's second chance love story. It's always interesting to see what type of spend would be placed on a second chance story. The additional of Bobby and his impact on the story was key. You recognize what compassion looks like. You also get to see what Family dynamics are made of.

You'll smile at moments and your heart strings will be pulled at others. Through it all you go on the journey of love and what it means to give of yourself.

I love a second chance romance! This is a sweet story about getting a second chance at love with the man who left her at the altar. I really wanted to hate Rick, and was looking for reasons to... but didn't Bobby on the other hand.....need somebody to tell this kid no! A great vacation read for a stormy evening.

I don't like books where the hero is an asshole, and (though not as frequent), I don't like books where the heroine is an asshole, either. Charlotte is a Grade A, first class, all-around bitch. Her life revolved around getting her indifferent father's attention, to the point where she cut everyone out of her life: her family, her colleagues, the entire freaking town. She has only herself to blame for this state, and she's well aware of it, but that doesn't stop her from feeling sorry for herself when (gasp!) her father gives away the job she's worked so hard for, and she realizes that maybe if she hadn't been such a snobby a-hole, she'd have something resembling a support system when she really needs one.

Instead, her ex-fiance reappears, and blames himself for her horrible life. I could only take about 100 pages of this before I threw up my hands and moved on. I don't have time, patience, or sympathy for characters who do nothing to deserve it. Such people can't be redeemed in my eyes.

I won't rate the book, because although I loathed the MCs, the book was not badly written. I've read another of this series and liked it okay, and will probably dip into it again, but wow. Purchasing this book was a mistake for me.

Charlotte had treated everyone horribly. Now that her father has done to her exactly as he has his other two daughters, Charlotte begins to realize what a horrible father Mr. Shields is. At the same time as her unemployment, her former fiancé moves back to Sweet Briar. Not only has he returned, he’s her next door neighbor. Will he be able to break thru the hard exterior that is now part of Charlotte’s DNA? She had no intent to allowing Dr. Rick Tyler to wiggle his way back into her life, but his adorable son was instantly smitten by Charlotte. Bobby was a sweet little boy that will cause you to laugh out loud!
What this book lacked for me was to provide some insights and updates on Charles Shields. Why was this man so hard hearted, how does a father dismiss all three of his daughters without looking back? Charlotte has done exactly as he expected her entire life, including being a horrible person, so why did his dismiss her so easily? I want answers!

Second chance romance

At first, I wasn't exactly sure about reading this book because Charlotte had been horrible in her sister's book. But I like the trope and was expecting grovel so I gave it a try and I actually really liked it. It was great getting to know Charlotte behind her prickly exterior, and I like how Rick came to understand how much impact his actions had and how he tried to make up for it, and I absolutely adored Bobby, the little matchmaker. I also really enjoyed the angst. My heart hurt for Charlotte and although it doesn't excuse her previous actions and I'm glad she recognized her part in the town's perceotiom of her, but I can also understand how she became like how she was.

The ending was a bit abrupt, though. I guess I got used to books having epilogues. 😅

Four and a half stars

A second-chance redemption story, Winning Charlotte Back is Kathy Douglass’s fourth in her Sweet Briar series. Charlotte Shields has an absolutely horrible day that turns essentially into a come-to-Jesus for her. Then who should turn up as her new neighbor than her ex…the guy who left her at the altar…

Rick Tyler is horrified by how deeply he’d hurt Charlotte. He’d thought they’d been of like minds on not being ready to marry to please their families, but it doesn’t sound like that was reality.

Charlotte and Rick and his son Bobby are a delight as they get (re)acquainted and sort out their relationship with each other and the Sweet Briar community. A terrific addition to the series.

When the man who left her at the altar…Moves in next door…This could not be happening. (marketing guru) Charlotte Shields had left both that heartbreaking day when she was left at the altar and this heartbreaking man behind. Even worse, their mutual attraction is back to betray her. Especially as (Dr.) Rick Tyler works hard to make amends. He’s got to make this move to Sweet Briar work to give his son Bobby a second chance. Will he get a second chance with Charlotte in the bargain?

Second chance romance with a twist. Boy left girl at the altar, even though he tried to get her to see that they were making a mistake. Another twist: boy comes home with a resentful stepson. There's not really a lot of development in the plot; there are a lot of issues left open, for example, the doctor's estranged ex-wife, Charlotte's father, her relationship with the town. Any one of them could give some more depth to the story.

Still Loving Second Chance Romance!! 🤗

I absolutely loved this book. Charlotte has truly been through it but love, true love, always has a chance to come and make life better! This is what happened with Charlotte, Rick and that precocious little boy, Bobby! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and series! I definitely recommend it!! Kudos, Kathy! 💜

The series continues to improve I enjoyed this book of the series. The romance second chance was written magnificently, characters well developed. The second chance for "Bobby" to have love of a woman was a great importance. The third chance was with "Charlotte's sister and the "Sweet Briar" people accepting her apology. Inspirational storyline.
