At last, the definitive account of James Bond's exploits during World War II! MARCH, 1941: Seventeen-year-old James Bond is a restless student in Scotland, an orphan, eager to strike out and make his mark on the world. But a visit by an old family friend coincides with THE CLYDEBANK BLITZ, the most devastating German attack on Scotland during the War. James will fight through hell to survive, coming out the other side determined to make a difference. He'll find his calling in a new British government service, secret in nature…
Well, we have been asking for this for years.....the origin of James Bond. Looking forward to reading this series. Off to a good start. Mystery and action.
The idea of a James Bond origin series is intriguing. This first issue gets the ball rolling, but it doesn't seem possible to tell much about the series just from one issue.
At age seventeen Bond isn't Bond yet. He's an orphan and a schoolboy; he's an unformed eager beaver searching for a calling. We all know that calling will be Her Majesty's Service, but he doesn't know that yet. It's fun to see his discipline, a touch of coldness, and his stubborn focus on tasks, and there are hints of his vulnerability and his curiosity about his parents.
If you get past some mild disappointment over the fact that he isn't our classic Bond yet, and focus on knowing more about his future than he does, this is fun. And that is the focus. The actual action here, some spies and the Clydebank Blitz and some schooldaze conflict, isn't especially stirring or attention grabbing. But I guess the first chapters of origin stories rarely are.
So, this was certainly well written enough, and was drawn convincingly enough, that I'm game as a reader to keep going to see what happens next to James.
(Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
As a lifelong Bond fan, I always wondered about his teen years leading up to the war. Origin #1 captures those initial moments with explosive plotting and crisp artwork. Can't wait to jump into the next chapters.
