Zero stars because I have to wait until 2021 for the next volume?!!?!
Just kidding. I enjoyed this one, with the discovery of the mana types as well as the Samurai ghost. As always, it's a very peaceable and relaxing storyline, and everything is gentle. The magic is in the everyday. Highly recommended. :-)
Basic magic, affinities, friendship and light and dark. This was fun, less funny but far more background into mana types, base magic and training. I loved the last story and the changes in so many characters.
Makoto Kowata is a witch. Or rather, she's a witch in training. As such, she has packed up all her belongings (and cat) to live with distant relatives. It's a bit of a family tradition – a way of sending young witches out into the world - but in a gentler way.
It's time for Makoto to take the next step in her witch training. More specifically, this means she and her family must travel to Shimokita. It's here where she'll (finally) learn which element she can potentially control.
Review:
Diving back into the world of Flying Witch with Flying Witch Vol. 8. I say diving back like I didn't binge the last four volumes of this series in one week (oops). It'll come as no surprise to hear that this volume perfectly matches the tone of the rest.
I am happy Flying Witch Vol. 8 moved Makoto's magical journey forward. Sometimes, the plot can stagnate with a slower-paced story (such as this one). Learning what Makoto's specialty (is that the right term?) is will help stem that feeling.
This volume deviates from the norm in a couple of small ways. I don't know how I feel about it, so I will give myself some time to think about it.
Highlights: Slice-of-life Witchy Tale Cat Familiar
Flying Witch is a manga that I have enjoyed gradually collecting over the years. Something I snap up when I see a new volume has appeared in the manga section of the bookstore and I have space in my book-buying budget.
Some of the chapters do have the whimsical aspects I love about the manga, like the samurai ghost and Makoto's misunderstanding with an owl, but not as many as I've read in previous volumes. This was a heavy explanation volume, where they send a lot of time explaining how witches are classified and walking the little sister through a potion-making lesson. Which is fine, by the the 8th volume Flying Witch has made clear its goal is to find humor in the mundane and one should not expect drama. However, I would welcome a bit of escalation or even an idea of Makoto making progress in her own studies.
Not sure why but this one just wasn’t hitting the spot for me like the others.
There was a ton going on with Mako finding out what kind of witch she is, which in theory sounded amazing but I don’t know if it’s the Mr Engiumo character was a lot for me, or there seemed to be way more going on stylistically but it almost felt like too much too fast after a lot of really slow, cozy and calm volumes.
There was also a lot more dialogue than the previous volumes from what I noticed. It felt a little overwhelming.
I enjoyed the chapter on the Samurai ghost that Anzu helps and the attempts at magic at home (the banana from Mako and ice spell from Chinatsu). I also really liked the one with the owl with a vendetta against Mako, that made me laugh. …But the last one about the high schoolers making a zombie themed movie wasn’t for me.
I feel like there’s already so many characters with the family and few friends introduced, so having even further now with more school friends is feeling like too much.
Maybe this is all just me, reading it when I was tired though? 😅 Well I’ll see as the volumes go on…
This one just felt less funny and fun than the previous ones.
Makoto is heading out to take her kokonotsu affinity test and of course she brings her family on the trip with her. In a search to learn more about what type of magic she is best suited for, Makoto learns even more about what it takes to be a witch and meets some interesting characters on the way.
It has been so long since I've read one of these volumes and I've truly missed it. This is such a wholesome little series but with astounding world building. I absolutely loved learning about the different affinities of magic and evening learning how rare certain types can be. Also getting to meeting a wizard as well helped to provide some additional fun elements. I truly love how simple yet well thought out and detailed this manga series is and I'm really hoping I can get my library to get the next volume soon!
Makoto finds out her magical affinity, makes an enemy in an owl, and helps her friends make a video of zombie volleyball.
This manga continues to have a lovely sweet feel with great artwork. I prefer the stories that focus on Makoto so chapter 45 was a jarring switch to me. My favorite was definitely the owl story - Makoto responds to an owl with an owl call that is so real the bird just can't believe she's not an invading male (until she pretends to be an angry gorilla instead). This story is why I read the series. Looking forward to the next one!
Simple, slow, episodic slice of life with a touch of magic. We got a little taste of the magic system in this one and got to learn our MCs affinity. The last chapter in this volume was a complete thematic change and was honestly really boring. I found myself skimming. I also didn’t care that much for the samurai ghost chapter.
Still a fun cozy read. More witchy stuff happening and more friends. We get to know Mako's elemental mana. Lots of experiments with magic and hi tech stuff. New spells and magic to learn. New ghost in town. New club at school with new talented unique friends. Owl's problem that's pretty funny. Yup lots happenings and all is fun and I really enjoyed it.
This was a very cute volume. We get introduced to the magic system a bit more and it’s very interesting! I laughed a few times and smiled the whole time. This is such a cute, lighthearted, easygoing manga! ❤️
Makoto and friends are back, learning about how to be a witch and how to be a friend. There's a mix of new characters and all of the regular ones, as they all grow and discover something new. The mix of stories help draw me into the world.
