Same As It Never Was is a humorous mystery is geared toward kids aged 11-14; both younger and older readers have enjoyed it as well. The story is driven by a funny, smart, and original female protagonist. Unusually, she is part of a spirited, quirky, but highly healthy/functional family. Contemporary issues pepper the novel, but Quinn Bard and her family represent the kind of family we all wish to be part of. Their humor, resilience, and ability to rely upon each other allows each to be strong in the face of the unknown.
I'm usually more of a middle-grade novel reader, but this YA mystery is a welcome addition to my Goodreads "Read" shelf. I loved Quinn, the strong, smart female protagonist. Her loving, functional family was a refreshing change from so many stories with depressing family dynamics. This is a quick, fast-paced read that I know most teens would enjoy.
