The Faith of Mike Pence

Rate this book
Several books have been published about Vice President Mike Pence, but none have touched upon what may be the most fascinating aspect of our nation’s second in his deep faith.
The Faith of Mike Pence offers an intimate look at the man who calls himself “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order.”
Author Leslie Montgomery details Pence’s spiritual journey and examines how the vice president’s commitment to Christ has been a key component in his life as a husband, father, and public servant. Montgomery examines Pence’s encounters with politicos and evangelistic leaders such as James Dobson and Charles Lake. She shows the role of Pence’s faith in running for various offices, implementing faith-based initiatives, and responding to 9/11, the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the infamous Anthrax scare in Congress that directly affected him.
The Faith of Mike Pence is a powerful account of one of the most conservative vice presidents in American history, with exclusive interviews and insightful commentary from friends, family, and colleagues. It is a serious and moving reflection about one of America’s most admired and respected politicians.

According to Leslie Montgomery’s mother, Dianne, she was born with a pen in one hand and a phone in the other. She began writing screenplays and commercials from home when she was only six years old, has kept a journal of her life since she was eight, and had her first article published in her hometown newspaper in Mountain Home, Idaho when she was only twelve. From there, Leslie began writing for various newspapers across America until she became a Christian at the age of twenty-three in 1993.

Since her conversion, Leslie has been a continual contributor to several ministries under the umbrella of Focus on the Family, authored hundreds of articles for several prominent faith-based magazines, ghostwritten numerous books for leading Christian authors, and written seven of her own books. Early in her writing career, Leslie was the director of publications, managing editor, and staff writer for the American Association of Christian Counselors. As a writer on diverse topics on one end of the spectrum to the other, Leslie finds much joy in revealing her secret to writing success.

“People always ask me how I decide what topic to write on,” Montgomery says, continuing. “All I can say is, I write what I’m prompted to write from the Spirit of the Lord, and He has always revealed the Biblical support and research necessary to support that which He asks me to pen. So far it’s worked well for me!”

Leslie is a known throughout her world-wide travels as a humorous and inspirational speaker, who filets her heart to listeners and readers on behalf of glorifying God.

“I recognize that I have nothing apart from God to share with people,” confesses Montgomery. “I find that when I speak from my heart, from my failures and disappointments, and share how the Lord has brought me up out of the mire and muck of my own sin and that of others, that people relate.”

Leslie writes from her 160-acre ranch in Lake Norden, South Dakota. She is married to Dallas Anderson, Pastor and Director of Proclamation Ministries for the Billy Graham Center and Missions America. Together they have approximately 60 horses, two dogs, and an unknown amount of cats and wildlife. Leslie is the mother of two grown children and as of date, the grandmother of two grandsons and a granddaughter.

The information in this biography was interesting; I enjoyed getting a closer look at the Vice-President, particularly from the angle of his faith. But I struggled to persevere through the poor writing.

Paragraphs were disconnected from each other, lacking transitional phrasing and cohesiveness. Even within paragraphs were sentences that had little to do with the topic. The author's interviewed sources were credible and their input insightful, but she frequently dropped basic transcripts from the interviews into the text without paraphrasing or editing to make the grammatical structure of what was spoken more fluid for reading.

Another flaw I blame on the editors. The bold-face paragraph headings were often so unimportant. I would see a heading, and think, "oh this will be interesting," only to be disappointed by some irrelevant information--for example, Pence's sister going to work on someone's campaign that had nothing to do with him or his faith, and in fact was only given a couple of sentences of coverage. Why was that even in the book, and what's more, given a large stand-out headline?

Would I recommend this title? Sure, just be prepared to skim through.

The Faith of Mike Pence

I found this book very interesting. I love reading about famous people. The book goes back to before he was born to current time. I learned a lot about him. The struggles he had in life and accomplishments. His faith in God helped him. How when he wasn’t close to God things were not the best.

Our country needs more men like him. That believe in putting God first. Even telling his wife ( per the book) before they were married that God would be first in his life. That she would be second.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. This review is my own opinion.

This short biography on the faith and public life of Mike Pence is an excellent introduction into the former Vice President of the United States. The emphasis of the book is on the faith of Pence and how that faith has guided him throughout his life, both public and private. Born into a Catholic family, he converted to Protestant Evangelicalism in his college and early adult years. Pence's story is one of ups and downs and his unwavering trust in God is an inspiration to all of us for when we face failure in our lives. Pence initially struggled to get into politics and made many mistakes along the way. Those mistake helped him grow as he was willing to acknowledge those mistakes and to grow from them. Through his faith and perseverance, he was blessed to serve our nation as Vice President and I hope this isn't the last we see, or get to read about Mike Pence. I highly recommend to people interested in learning more about the Vice President as well as the role faith plays in the lives of so many conservative Christians currently serving in government.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

First of all, I absolutely adore and respect our current vice-president Mike Pence. I have heard plenty about him in the media--both good and bad. However, his faith is something that continues to amaze and challenge me. And for those who are curious about the "real story" behind the man, this is definitely the book to read.

To be honest, the only minimal complaint I have is that sometimes, the book does not flow as I would expect a biography to do. The stories are amazing. The biographical information included is accurate and referenced adequately. I appreciated the inclusion of quotes and anecdotes from those who know Mike Pence in real life. But I would have appreciated more of a flow in narration.

Notwithstanding, this is the book that will make the reader either love (or hate) him more than he/she did previously.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book. I'm not big on discussing politics and not interested in reading political books. This book is none of that but is filled with scriptures and faith that encourages readers and helped me get a glimpse of a man who is humble and very faith oriented.

I loved reading about his upbringing and how as a small child faith was instilled in him. His parents were devoted to their children and never strayed from their beliefs. It is easy to see how this man had deep rooted values passed down through generations. I loved reading how Mike Pence looked up to his father with honor and appreciation. His father was a true example of a Godly man. His father told his children to, " Climb your own mountain ." He wanted them to pursue their dreams and listen to God's direction.

There are several historical figures mentioned such as Martin Luther King Jr. and President Kennedy who influenced the family in how to treat others and trust God. Both of these men had strong convictions and it did have a big impact on the nation. Even as a young child, Mike Pence was being influenced by strong leaders who left an impression on his life.

The author gives us a look into Mike Pence's beginning into politics and becoming leadership material. He learned a lot of lessons along the way and I think it made him stronger as a Christian. To think as a young boy that someday you would hold one of the most powerful positions in the nation was hard to comprehend for him at times.

His wife sounds like a treasure being described as, "the spiritual backbone of their marriage." That oneness that they share speaks volumes about their relationship. It is important for spouses to encourage each other and stand together as one. Mike Pence found that in his wife who has never faltered from her faith.

I enjoyed reading about his journey into politics and how hard it was at times to forge ahead with his dreams. His father was not excited at first when hearing about his son's aspirations, but later he became his son's biggest supporter. That must have felt so good to know his father was willing to help him follow "his own mountain."

The book is a reflection of a man who is faith filled and makes his decisions wisely and with God's council. There is a lot of background about his life that intrigued me and I feel like I know him better. The author does a good job of writing a book that shows us a man of faith living his dream and not afraid to stand up and say he is a Christian.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

the Faith of Mike Pence is a look into the life of our 48th Vice-President of the United States. First off I understand you might not like Mike Pence at all and I am okay with that. If you like Mike Pence I am okay with it. If you are not, I am okay with that too. Everyone has the right to like or dislike him. I am terrified about releasing this book review because I fear I will make someone mad. I try not to take political books to review.
Anyways.
This is a biography focuses on how his faith impacted his childhood and career in politics. Leslie Montgomery gives the readers a peek into Mike Pence's deeply held religious convictions and his utmost devotion to his family. This book showed me he is just a down to earth man who does his best to live for God and help people as much as he can. I found his life very interesting and empowering when it comes to faith and beliefs.
Voters know some of his beliefs already such as being pro-life, a supporter of Israel and an advocate for seniors and veterans. I love how Montgomery pushes the importance of not attacking his political opponents in a negative way instead run political campaigns in a positive way. She didn't portray him as a perfect guy because no one is. She told it like it is. This book shows a different side to the Vice-President. It is filled with anecdotes, quotes, and information provided by friends and family members. The Faith of Mike shares refreshingly honest, interesting and judgment-free details about Mike Pence's personal and professional life. No matter what side you are on with Mike Pence, I recommend still reading this book anyways.
“We live in a diverse country with people with different viewpoints and different lifestyles and I don’t believe in discrimination or mistreatment of anyone. I believe we should love our neighbor as ourself, but neither do I think that anyone should ever fear persecution because of their deeply held religious beliefs.” - Mike Pence

“I’m a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order.”

The Faith of Mike Pence is a fascinating look into the life of the 48th Vice-President of the United States. This unique biography of Mike Pence focuses on how his faith impacted his childhood and career in politics. Despite our country’s differing and often divisive political beliefs, the author gives readers a glimpse into Mike Pence’s deeply held religious convictions and his upmost devotion to his wife and children.

Some of the Vice-President’s beliefs, such as being pro-life, a supporter of Israel, and an advocate for seniors and veterans are discussed, but this biography emphasizes his faith and how God has guided him through his life. Even though so much negativity is in politics today, the author explains the importance that Mike Pence places on not attacking his political opponents and, instead, running political campaigns filled with positivity. The author shares Mike Pence’s experiences in Congress, as the Governor of Indiana, and very briefly, his election as Vice-President.

Readers will enjoy this well-written biography of Mike Pence and see a different side of our Vice-President than the negativity that is often portrayed in the media. I recommend this book to readers who want to learn more about our Vice-President or even those who enjoy history and current events.

One of the biggest pulls for me towards the current President during the past election was the Vice-President. When I saw this book, I knew I wanted to read it, and get to know more about this man.
I have to say I was not disappointed!! Vice-President Mike Pence is a very impressive man! Reading about his life was interesting and inspiring. The author does a great job at portraying him as a down to earth man, who just does his best to live for the God he loves. That is what really impressed me the most. I like that he loves his family, makes an effort to prioritize his wife and children. He values family! I was impressed with the stand he takes for the cause of Christ and not allowing pressure and politics to override his beliefs and the foundation of the Word of God he stands on. I can only imagine the pressure to bend, fit in, do the run of the mill stuff with everyone else. However, this book points out a man who seeks like Solomon to govern people well, in the wisdom of the One who created him.

All that being said, Leslie also doesn't portray him as perfect, and none of us are. So if she did, I would have second thoughts on this book, as though maybe she were building him up too much. Overall, this book does a great job of portraying the Vice-President in a different light than what the media chooses. Leslie writes it in an easy to read way, in a time line manner beginning with the Vice President's parents and heritage.

I would highly recommend this book, especially if you just want to know the Vice President more personally and understand the whys about what he does and what he stands for. It was very enlightening and I am going to be encouraging my teenage son to read it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book courtesy of Celebrate Lit and the Publisher. All opinions are my own. I was not asked to review this book positively.

I am going to start this review off with saying this book surprised me. I say that because when I read most books for a book tour I don't read the back of the book to see what it is about because I just want to read the book and not know anything about the book other than it is a clean read. Well, obviously I knew I knew this book was going to be about Mike Pence. I was really thinking this is going to be really boring and uninteresting because I don't like politics and I was also thinking I probably not going to understand it because It would have "bills" and other government like that. Well, I am so excited to tell you "The Faith of Mike Pence" by Leslie Montgomery is nothing like that at all.

I really enjoyed reading this book and the book is fact about Mike Pence, the man and his faith. It does tells of his running for Congress and it does mention a few things he is for and a few things he is against but this book doesn't dwell on them. This book is more a book about how Mike Pence lives out His Faith and not just talk the talk.

I really recommend every America reading this book, regardless if you are a Democrat or a Republican, whether you support Mike Pence or not. I recommend reading this book if you ever wanted to know more about Mike Pence or if even if you never wanted to know more Mike Pence.
Mike Pence believes God's promise in Chronicles 7:14 "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

So, no matter where your political views lie, you have to admit Mike Pence is a unique, interesting guy if for no other reason than his seemingly untouchable calmness in all situations. I really admire that he and his family seem to really live out their lives based off their personal relationship with Christ, and don't just use religion as a political power play like most politicians do. What I really liked about the book was it showed Mike Pence as an average guy, and showed another side to him when he wasn't the guy we know now, and how he made mistakes along the way. The book is presented from many printed sources and also from interviews including family members, friends, other politicians, and even those that aren't particularly religious, but had been impacted by Mike Pence. I know with politics being so divisive today, it can be hard to pick up a book like this, but I was really refreshed that it wasn't a book set out to really put Mike Pence on a pedestal, but just show how the Lord has led him and continues to lead Him to be involved in our country's leadership in some way or form. I think regardless of political beliefs, the quality of writing and relatability of this man that is now our Vice President makes for an interesting read. The book is also written in an inviting and smooth flowing way rather than presenting a lot of facts. At the end, I didn't feel like the book was a political manifesto, but rather an interesting and in depth look at an average man that happens to now be our Vice President.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and all opinions given are entirely my own.

Finished this book today and I have to say that it was an amazing experience reading this book. This book is an easy 5/5, Highly recommend it.

The only negative I have about this book is that when you pick it up and want to read the blurb to see what the book is about, 4 reviews... you want to start reading the book so you open it and you see the first 5 pages filled with 20+ more reviews... My only complaint is that the Author started of with blowing her own trumpet but that's it for the negatives there is nothing else which is bad that I have to say about about this book.

This is the first book that I read which talked a lot about religion and as someone who is not very religious and the last time I visited the church was a decade ago, I have to say that it was a breath of fresh air and it changed my perspective quite a bit about faith as that is what the book focused on. I really enjoyed it because I wanted to find some more information about Mike Pence and this book provided me with entertainment, knowledge and guidance. The Author (Leslie Montgomery) did a great job talking about the life of Mike Pence and always linked it back to his faith even from the beginning when he was a little boy.

Final thoughts:
This is an amazing book that I would recommend to everyone regardless of religion or political view. This is an easy 5/5 and would read it again, Leslie Montgomery did a phenomenal job with this masterpiece!

Vice President Mike Pence is quoted in author Leslie Montgomery’s book saying “I’m a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that o&rder.” My heart warmed when I read that. Author Montgomery did an outstanding job with this biography focusing on faith which Mr. Pence has unquestionably.

There are eighteen chapters in this open, frank book on the Vice President. I was not expecting so much scripture. It was a pleasant surprise. It is obvious that Mike Pence is a man of great faith. In my humble opinion he should be praised for that and not ridiculed or scoffed.

I liked the author’s easy style of writing. She had notes to back up her facts. The book was excellently planned and organized. I learned a lot of things about Mr. Pence. He was named after his maternal grandfather for one. He tells the complete story of his faith from being a young child in a faithful Christian home to being a straying teen and finally coming back to the Lord.

This is an uplifting, encouraging true story filled to the brim with faith. It will give readers a clearer view into the heart of Mike Pence. I loved it and would highly recommend it. Everyone should read it to get to know our Vice President better. It definitely gets a 5 star rating. Celebrate Lit provided a copy but these are my honest thoughts.

Plenty of primary research (mostly by interview, it seemed) and simple writing paints a clear image of Pence's development as a person, politician, and man of faith. Not a 'tell all' - no hint at skeletons - but bumps-along-the-way are relayed. Not a puff piece, but it seems to be aimed at readers who may already respect or even be big fans of Pence. So, instead of trumpeting rhetoric aimed at his louder critics, it plots out how and why the choices he and his wife made (they are a tight TEAM) brought him to politics (not the priesthood) and the White House. There's a gently compelling through-line of Pence's dedication to servant-leadership. The context/contrast to his basic ambition to reach particular goals makes for a bit of tension. Any gaffes and inaccurate perceptions by Pence and others are not explained away, but are paired with how his reliance on faith and biblical teachings helped him resolve whatever was happening. The writing is not the pinnacle of literary narrative. There's more of a intro-fact-discuss briefly pattern than writerly flow. Yet it offers a crystal clear voice and easy-to-read pacing to reveal insights and inspirations from Pence's work as it's grounded in the study and application of his faith.

One of my most favorite things to read is biographies/memoirs/etc on how people go to where they are. I read presidential/VP biographies for fun. I was excited to get the chance to review this title - since I minored in religion in undergrad. This book was a wonderful read focusing on our Nation's Vice-President and his trust in God. One of the things that I love is that it tells how God has guided him throughout his entire childhood, teen years, adulthood and politics. I love how he has stayed true to his faith. One of my favorite things that he has said is: "“I’m a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order.” In a world that has turned their back on God - this book shows that good Godly men still exist.

Some of his political beliefs are discussed - but not dwelled on. This book is more of a reflection to how God has been a constant in his life. I love that he even admits, that he is far from perfect - and that God's love is perfect.

This book made my heart happy.

I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program -- all thoughts are my own.

I have always had an interest in learning more about Vice President Mike Pence, even since his days of Governor of Indiana. I have especially admired him for his Faith in Jesus Christ. I jumped at the chance to read and review this book when I found out about it!

The Faith of Mike Pence is a book that is just that, one that talks about the Faith of not a Politician, but an Average Man who has risen to be the Vice President of our Country. I really enjoyed reading the interviews that Author Leslie Montgomery conducted with Family and Long time friends of Vice President Mike Pence. The interviews give a wonderful perspective on how Mike Pence has not allowed the World to influence him, rather he has always relied on his Faith in Jesus Christ to direct his path, and has been his guide since childhood. Vice President Pence hasn't always had an easy path and through the tough times, his Faith didn't waver, yet was strengthen.

Leslie Montgomery does a WONDERFUL job at keeping this about Vice President Mike Pence Faith and not Politics. A VERY enjoyable READ and I do recommend this book!

When I first read that Leslie Montgomery had based The Faith of Mike Pence on interviews I was skeptical. I’ve read biographies before that were just a bunch of quotes strung together without really telling a story. Thankfully that is NOT what Montgomery did. The book is well-written. The quotes are woven into the story and support it.
Leslie Montgomery tells the life story of Mike Pence through the lens of his faith journey. I really appreciated reading this story which further deepened my admiration for the second most influential man in our nation and the biblical stand he has taken in all areas of his life. I highly recommend The Faith of Mike Pence to those interested in learning more about our Vice President.

Areas of potential concern
Hell and damn are used in some quotes but it does not happen very much in the book as a whole.

I will be adding The Faith of Mike Pence to my k-12 Christian school library.
I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complimentary e-copy of The Faith of Mike Pence.

After reading this book I have an even higher regard for Mr. Pence. I appreciate his deep faith that goes hand in hand with his love for others. In today’s politics, I'm sure it’s difficult to allow your faith to guide you.

In this book you’ll read about Pence’s journey as a Christian, a husband, and a politician. There are interviews with many people who esteem him highly. Yet I appreciate that Montgomery didn’t write about him as if he’s perfect. We see flaws in a man who deeply wants to follow Christ. And while his political beliefs are touched on, this book his about his spiritual journey as a believer.

I will say that because of the style of the book, and maybe the author’s writing style, there were times this book was dry, almost as if Ms. Montgomery was just stating facts, and I felt it was very simplistically written. But that is my personal viewpoint. Others may enjoy this style of book. All in all it was interesting and refreshing.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

I believe that The Faith of Mike Pence is definitely a must read. I honestly did not know a whole lot about our Vice President of the United States. It was interesting to read about him growing up, how he met his wife Karen, his children, becoming a House of Representative for Indiana, Governor of Indiana, Vice President, and most importantly, his faith. It was nice to read how he is highly respected from both major political parties. I love how he has reached out to help refugees, immigrants, and others who are have different faiths. It was great to actually read something that is so positive about him.

I give The Faith of Mike Pence five plus stars. I highly recommend it for those who want to learn more about Mike Pence, his faith and his family. I found it to be inspiring and I believe so many other readers would too.

I received this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

I enjoyed learning about behind the scenes in the life of Mike Pence, the US vice president. Hearing about his strong faith and his family values reassures readers, especially Christians. The text is filled with quotes and statements by those involved in his life. I would prefer a more story-like presentation. It’s hard to remain interested and continue reading when the book seems more like a report with so much documentation. Statements are also often repeated unnecessarily. However, the facts shared do offer hope for our nation. It’s encouraging to hear about godly men in leadership. We also see a good example to follow in prayer and priorities. Knowing and following God’s Word holds great importance in Mike Pence’s life. After reading the narrative, I feel like I know him well as a person. He sounds like someone anyone could visit with. It could be a book to discuss as a group. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

For quite a while I have been interested in learning more about Mike Pence. I find it incredible that he is willing to stand up for his Christian beliefs. I have great respect for his firm stance of not being alone with any woman who is not his wife. So I was excited to get the opportunity to review this book.

I found this book does an excellent job of illustrating how Mike Pence does not just “talk the talk” of a Christian, but how he actually “walks the walk” of a Christian. I found the book worth reading and interesting.

I appreciated how the book did not dwell on what Mike Pence is against or his political career but stayed on point about his faith. I felt the author did an excellent job of creating a book that was engaging to read. I also found the book to be one I wanted to continue reading. So if you are interested in learning more about Mike Pence and his faith, check out this book for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

Let me just say, if Mike Pence runs for President he has my vote. I wish I would have known more about him before the presidential election, not that that would have changed my vote but it would have made me feel more confident about it.

If you want to get to know our vice-president more this is a book I definitely recommend. Even if you don’t agree with him politically hopefully you would agree with him spiritually.

I got tears in my eyes I read about him becoming VP after reading his whole journey. It is so God and I think it’s wonderful the President Trump choose Mike as his running mate.

A copy of this book was given to me through the Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.

This book took me a very long time to complete, and I did not enjoy it in the least. It's not that there isa problem with the information that Leslie Montgomery gives, it's just that the way in which it is written proves eternally tedious to read. I don't recomend this book. The author does a good job at representing Pence's faith, which is the main objective of the book. She also draws extensively on interviews with people close to Pence and the second family. That said, the manner in which it relates those interviews is very boring. If you want to read about the faith of Mike Pence, read his autobiography, you can hear it from his own mouth.

As the facts continue to pile about our President, I am curious about the VP. This typical campaign book reveals lots of things about Mike Pence that tell us we our troubles with Trump are dying away.

This bio is a typical book for people who plan to run for resident. What makes it very difficult to get through is the overwhelming these of Pence's religious faith. It overwhelms the book.

The spelling errors were distracting:
Lew Wallace (not Lou) was the author of Ben Hur.
Tennyson, not Tennison, was the great British poet.
She uses “proceeded” when she means “preceded.”

However, the book is well-researched and convincing. I do believe Pence is serious about his faith and well-meaning in government. I do not believe he is infallible, and I have long thought him to be equivocating. This book did nothing to dispel these judgments.

What a positive and inspiring book. If you aren’t interested in the whole thing, I highly recommend reading at least the Preface and the last four chapters, which focus on his Vice Presidency. Excellent insight into this inspiring man’s journey, his strong faith and how he so humbly and honestly puts it into practice.

Read this to learn how to better pray for our Vice President. Was really fun to get to a glimpse of how Vice President Pence’s faith grew throughout his life. The one downside was not much of his actual perspective.

Very well written. Gave us a real insight on how and why he thinks and acts the way he does. Very admirable traits for a man in politics. Wish Washington DC and the States had more men who were able to stand on their own beliefs and morals.
