Since Burt retired at fifty-two, he’s been bored. After a chance encounter with a mugger he decides he might just be meant to save the world one crime at a time. And voilà, Burt’s Private Investigations is born. Before he knows it, he’s in deep and possibly over his head. He stumbles onto a dead body, which turns out to be the daughter of the town’s country club owner who has rumblings of mob ties in his past. The clues lead him all over the North Georgia mountains, but the most intriguing ones lead to an end of the world compound and its charismatic leader. Thrown into a bizarre new world, Burt uses his humor to charm potential suspects, his eccentric friends to aid in his discoveries, and his new zest for life to charge directly ahead into the unknown as he learns on the job how to catch a killer.
Jason Deas has taught art in elementary schools for over a decade. He likes his job three and a half days a week. He is a songwriter, sculptor, and makes a mean pot of chili. Most of his writing used to take place at Georgia campgrounds, inside a three-man tent or sitting at an uncomfortable concrete picnic table. He wouldn’t have had it any other way until he one day found a 70’s-model camper where he now writes in luxury. Jason has published flash fiction and poems. After writing Birdsongs, a mystery for adults, his nieces asked him to write a book for kids and he granted their wish and wrote Camp Timber View. He had so much fun writing it he is currently putting the finishing touches on another middle grade novel titled The Big Stinky City. He is also working on the sequel to Birdsongs titled, Baptized by Jim.
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Burt ---------------------------------- What happens? Burt is a retired teacher that as most retirees are bored with too much time on their hands (sorry neighbour Bryan). He has a small win of stopping a thief and decides he could do more like this and sets up a private investigator unofficially.
It starts to get more serious when Burt gets his next case which involves a body being found. Showing him that maybe this wasn't the best idea he had had. Final thoughts This isn't the worst mystery I've read but its not my cup of tea. I prefer more cosy mysteries or at least that was what I wanted now. It was nice to read a book with a male lead in a mystery; its normally more thrillers with male leads and mysteries with female leads. Would I read again?: Not likely Would I read this author again?: Yes
Burt is bored with retirement. Through a few chance circumstances, he ends up making the decision to begin his own private investigation company. The first case is easy. The second brings him face to face with a dead girl, a business owner with a shady past, and a doomsday cult. Will he figure out who the killer is or be put out of business for good?
There were so many relatable moments in this book that I absolutely adored the main character. I think my favorite line was “The whole purpose of paying at the pump was to avoid human interaction.”
There were a lot of goofy moments like this that really made the main character, and supporting characters feel real. This entire storyline was fantastic. While I’ve read/listened to a lot of detective murder mysteries, I’ve never come across one with such a unique angle before.
Narration was perfect.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
I really liked this book and liked the characters in it. My favorite was Burt. This was well written and flowed from chapter to chapter. What an interesting ending to the story. It was good enough for me to look for more in the series.
Undone is the first book in the Burt Bigsley Murder series by Jason Deas. As I’m a fan of mysteries, I was excited to listen to this audiobook and it did not disappoint!
Burt is a retired school teacher with too much time on his hands. After stopping a purse snatcher, he celebrates and decides that it’s time to put his free time to better use and just like that Burt’s an unlicensed private investigator. And after solving his first case, Burt’s a little cocky. Burt’s next case won’t be as easy when he finds a body and soon he’s all over the place following the clues to her killer.
Sometimes the first book in a series can just be overwhelming with all the information and characters but that was not the case with this one. This book was written to just let you enjoy this one, while building the world for future books. The character of Burt was well done. Sometimes he came across as just an old man that got lucky and sometimes he seems pretty naive, but he was an easy to like character, who was smart and good on his feet. He was thrown in some weird, crazy situations but he handled them well. Sometimes I questioned his methods, but it just further developed his character.
The murder mystery was very well done! There were so many clues, twists and turns that I never figured it out before Burt had his reveal! I really thought it was one person and that the author was just trying to throw me off the scent with the twists and turns! I was wrong!
The narrator of this book is Kyle Tait, who did a fantastic job with all the characters! The narrator had an easy to listen to voice and was able to bring the story to life. He had an easy pace, clear diction with no weird pauses. The narrator expressed the appropriate emotion to really bring the story to life!
I really hope the author continues this series as he’s done such a great job with this first book! The author has really done a great job of with this first book and built a lot of interesting characters, I’d love to see more of them.
No spoilers in this review. I loved the plot and story line. The author does a fantastic job of keeping you guessing and gives you an original story. Overall it is a clean book except for the continued use of the Lord's name in vain, which to me that's as bad as the F bomb. That being said I did really enjoy the style and the book. I would definitely recommend this one to those who love a great mystery adventure in the private I style.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This is a new mystery series. Jason Deas is a new author to me. I am a big fan of mysteries and this was wonderful. I liked the characters very much and I can't wait to read the next book and see how Burt continues with his PI business. Kyle Tait does an incredible job of narrating this book. I was gifted this book with the understanding I would leave an honest review.
I enjoyed the story line very much. Loved Burt and the rest of the characters. I will probably read the next book to find out more about Burt's retirement. I think that most readers would like this book, but especially the who dunnit readers. Pick it up and have a blast.
Loved this mystery. The characters were developed in a way that made me feel like I knew them. I was fascinated by Bert who gave retirement a whole new twist. Undone is a fun mystery. Made me laugh but was so intriguing I didn’t want to put it down.
Enjoyed this book. Burt is a retired art teacher, suddenly a hero on a purse snatching. After a few too many beers decided to be a PI. Good plot, quite a few chuckles. Good supporting characters.
This is a fun and easy to read mystery about a new private investigator without any issues (drinking, drug use, etc.). The story flowed smoothly and the characters were well thought out.
Awesome read! Retired teacher has a little too much to drink and puts an ad in the newspaper, after he caught a mugger who stole a ladies purse. Lots of excitement going on. Definitely a recommended read!!
I read alot of murder mystery and dark physiological mysteries this book caught my eye for some reason. Oh it's a murder mystery but very lighthearted and funny. Very nice break from my usual reads. I'll be reading more of Burt!
I really enjoyed this quick read. Burt has a great sense of humor. He and Officer Whitley had some funny conversations. A few times I actually laughed out loud. I plan to read the second book in this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main character was so entertaining with his quirky sense of humor, and the story moved along very well. I can’t wait to read the next episode of Burt Bigsley’s retirement adventures!
This book had a lot of action and suspense. The main character seemed to be a bubbling idiot but was lovable. The twist at the end who the killer was, was not expected. Would definitely recommend this author.
Another great book by this author. Retired teacher turned private investigator who solved the case. Hope there are more books to come for Burt and his friends.
Never read this author before but will read more of his work. Good characters and plot. Also some humorous ports. I would recommend this book to anyone.
