For centuries, tales have told of merfolk haunting the seas, strange creatures teasing or helping sailors at their whim, occasionally having them for dinner.
And not in a cordial sense.
Alexis Silver was ahead of her time, a woman too smart to fit into society at the turn of the century. She gave up her dreams of higher education for love, marrying young, but her husband, and the life she wanted, perished in World War I soon after. Heartbroken and restless, she booked passage on a cruise along the West Coast in search of adventure, but adventure found her.
The ship capsized, killing everyone on board, except for her. As she drifted far beneath the waves, inexplicably alive, the reason for her survival flashed by in a streak of silver...
a merman.
He had passed along the curse — or gift as Alexis sees it.
A century later, she breaks up the monotony of immortality in the Pacific Northwest working as a private investigator. The long-dormant maternal instincts of her resident Dark Master kick in when a nice older couple hire her to find their missing son and his family. Her instincts tell her this isn't like her usual jilted-spouse cases.
If she doesn't work fast, a little girl is going to die.
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
This was really appreciated. A solid, new, take on classic mythologies without the all-too-frequent baggage of overly forced subplots. Silver Light by Matthew Cox is just about perfect. And the one imperfection is forgivable, and probably just in the eye of the beholder.
Alexis Silver is a PI, someone who has a reputation for getting the job done, and sometimes doing weird things. Like being a mermaid. If it helps, she wasn't born that way... Ok, I expect eyes are rolling, since the 'mermaid' thing is basically associated with the House of Mouse and their animation department. Or any number of clones thereof. Cox has done something totally different here. In this cosmology, the mer are possessed (ish) by what he terms Dark Masters, who seem to be ascended (descended?) humans with magical powers and darkness in their souls. Evil deeds, even when done for understandable reasons, are still evil - that kind of thing.
So, we have Alexis, born about a century back, very smart, married young to a soldier killed in WWI, and then shipwrecked, and transformed. The back is a bit weaker than I like, but not so much to be an issue. As a mer, she needs to consume raw meat fairly often (sushi counts), and not be too far from salt water, preferably the ocean.
When she is hired to find a missing family, she finds herself in the middle of a lot more - from ex-boyfriend werewolves to children in peril. That is part of what makes this so good; there is a lot of room for more, but you never feel the plot or characters are being neglected. And that includes all the characters. Alexis, her Dark Master, the victims, the clients, the cops, the side characters, everyone is getting their time, and their arc are all contained and consistent. We never see anyone acting out of character, or beyond the realm of believability.
It is refreshing to see people being real. A lot of the books I haven't talked about have been having problems with that, and so it becomes something to note here. Literally everyone is believable. It seems like a small thing, but really, really isn't.
There is one little problem I had. The book runs afoul of Chekhov's Gun. This literary rule was stated by the playwright several times, and basically says "Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there." Misdirection is one thing, but it still uses the 'gun'. In this, we have the oddly detailed opening scenes with the missing rich kid and his hippie friends in the woods. I mean, really oddly detailed. As in (per my Kindle) the first 8% of the book. And it goes nowhere. That is just ringing a bell in my head - there needs to be either less detail for it to work as a throwaway introduction, or we need to come back to this. I spent the rest of the book waiting for things to tie back together, and it just never happened.
Then again, this is book one of a series, so there is time!
Really, the initial intro case's level of detail and lack of continuation is all I had issue with in this book. There is every reason to buy and read, and not a single good reason not to.
This is definitely the same world as the Sam Moon series in that she’s possessed by a Dark Master as is Sam and the two do share a mutual ‘friend’. Alexis has a much better relationship with her Master whom I really like. But I have no idea if they will know each other. Maybe in a future book.
This one introduces Alexis’s corner of the world and her way of life, history, the necessities of being a mermaid, etc. She is also a P.I. like Sam, only she can swim and breathe underwater, etc, so her cases tend to center around water of some kind.
Footnote: 1) I’m jealous of her house on the ocean and window seat.
2) What is this with Starbucks? Everybody can’t seem to stay away from craving it. It’s just an overpriced, oddly mixed cup of coffee that could just as cheaply found somewhere else. They’re encouraging people to drink coffee combinations that don’t make sense. Like non-fat milk and extra marshmallows, etc. Tea, especially herbal is so much better for you. It has some caffeine plus things that help you sleep, wake up, get over a cold, etc. (I ordered a cup of tea from them at an airport and it tasted and smelled like coffee, which I don’t like. Ruined the tea). PS: Google how they got their logo. It’s eye-opening.
Fave scenes: Trisha’s wisdom, cop in the water, the hospital bathroom and the mermaid swim.
J.R. Rain and Matthew S. Cox make an amazing writing team, and their newest collaboration, Silver Light, is a testament to this. In it, they introduce us to another wonderful character, Alexis Silver, who was turned into a mermaid as she’s drowning in the sea. And let me tell you, this is no Ariel. With a resident Dark Master, razor sharp teeth, iridescent scales and a penchant for eating hearts, she is a P.I. on the case of a missing family that leads back to her beloved ocean. She is truly a wonderful character, witty, down to earth and caring. And lo and behold, she was once “married” to Kingsley Fulcrum, our massive werewolf heartthrob from the Vampire for Hire series. The story comes to a very satisfying conclusion with no cliffhanger or tease about what’s to come. My only hope is that Messrs. Rain and Cox don’t make us wait too long for the next mystery. Highly recommended to all.
I have been a fan of Samantha Moon for a long time, and when I saw this i was excited to be able to listen/read more from this world. This is a fun book about mermaids and what happens when you have a host who lives with you. Alexis has lived many lives and now is a private investor and takes on some interesting cases. I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding this and the narrator does a great job. Can't wait for the next one

This is a paranormal thriller in which Alexis Silver, a mermaid, investigates the case of a disappeared family.
Alexis became a mermaid after dying in a ship that sank and she is not alone on her quest; there's a ghost living in her head. Together and with the help of humans who also dedicate their life to investigation, they start a journey to save a little girl from the hands of a killer.
I found the writing style easy to follow, which made the book a quick read. The story is mainly character driven, but the plot is logical and the timing makes sense.
However, I found the supernatural aspect of it barely believable. A girl who dies and suddenly becomes a mermaid with a soul -that is actually beautiful and can pass as a human whenever she wants-, a ghost inside her head talking to her and making which were meant to be funny remarks and other supernatural characters that seem to be immortal.
Kelley Hutson gave the story a tone that made you want to know more, but I think there should have been a bigger difference between one voice and another to identify characters better, aside from the main ones.
I'd recommend it if you're character driven and believe in the supernatural aspects mentioned.
This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read "Deep Silver"!
Alexis has bonded with her Dark Master Lucinia quite well. They live together in her head quite comfortably together. Like the best of girlfriends neither overshares that which would make the other uncomfortable ... For the most part. Nowadays Alexis is working as a PI to keep her from boredom. Finding lost people and spying on cheating spouses keeps her from being too bored. What happens when she gets a case that hits too close to home? Will she play by society's rules or make up her own? Both she and Lucinia are fond of children... How far would they go to protect one? To avenge one?
***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a little grotesque in their urban fantasy with plenty of humor and suspense :)
A great new take on a detective tale. I have been reading the Samantha Moon series for years and love them. That being said, I love Alexis Silver more. Between the friendship between Alexis (Alex - what is it with Kingsley and women with "manly" names?) and her "dark master", the 20's lingo that slips in, the undersea wonders as explained by the mermaid, and the just enough detail of the story telling this maybe one of my favorite private investigator series of all time. I can't wait for the next one.
Alexis Silver is a PI, a mermaid and over a century old. Alexis was kill in a boating accident in 1904 and make a mermaid. Her dark master is Licinia, she was a mother who practice the dark arts to protect her family. Her dark master is not truly evils, so she is sorry she change Alexis. The first book has two cases, 1 looking for a missing family and finding out if a husband is cheating. With the help of Detective Paolo will she solve the case. This is like a Samantha Moon's series.
My very first mermaid book, and it was fantastic!! This is definitely no Disney story either. Alex was turned after a ship she was traveling on sinks. Once she was able, she set out on her own to make the most of her new life. She became a PI so that she can help people in need. This is a very engrossing story and had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this review voluntarily
I am a huge fan of this author's Samantha Moon/Vampire for Hire series, and this has all the flavor of that with a mermaid twist! At first I thought it sounded cheesy, but hey, it worked for me as soon as I started to read it. This author definitely spun the tail (ha, pun intended!) in a convincing light, and I was soon deeply drawn into the mystery and storyline. I hope the next in the series comes out soon as I really enjoyed Alexis's story and can't wait for more.
All I can say is wow! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Who knew that mermaids and other supernatural creatures actually existed? The story flowed well. Getting to see bits and pieces of Alexis' background was good. I highly recommend reading this. I'm ready for the next book in the series now.
Another wonderful series to look forward to with J.R. Rain. The characters, plot, storyline, all very well developed. Twist and turns that kept you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this new book and if you have not read any of the other series by J.R. Rain please do so you will be happy you did.
I love J. R. Rain and his writing so much. The stories he writes with whomever he co writes with are all amazing. He was the first author I followed once joining Kindle quite a few years ago. His writing never disappoints. I'm excited about this series. I love Alexis, such a strong female lead.
Mermaid with a Dark Master in her head and working as a Private Investigator???? Sounds crazy but it works! The story is creative with some humor thrown in the mix. I recommend placing this one on your reading list.
I am a huge fan of some of this author's books, particularly the Samantha Moon, Jim Knighthorse and Allison Lopez series. Some of the other series I don't particularly like. I really liked this book. Alexis is a delight. A spectacular start to what I hope is a multi book series.
I like the heroine of this series and that the tone of the mysteries is on the lighter side of the spectrum. The mermaid as a detective idea is not one I've encountered before, but it works. Everything is fairly easy for Alexis - she's got supernatural charm that works on more than half of the world, plus strength, healing abilities, super sharp senses, and the ability to shape shift. She can't be a way from saltwater too long, but that's about it in terms of weaknesses. And she wasn't driven crazy by her transformation - she's a very well adjusted person. So the tone of these books is pretty even keel, which I liked. Not all that memorable, but a pleasant read. Each book has a few different cases she's working on, some of which are mundane and easy to close, others really hard to close. The cases end up a showcase for her supernatural abilities.
Really? A mermaids P.I.? How fantastic is that? LOVE it! The premise is unusual, but it works, because the authors are so good at what they do. If you want to read something easy at the beach, this is it. But, beware, you may not go in the ocean....too busy reading.
I loved the storyline with another 'dark master', that behaves differently than Sam Moon 's or others we have encountered throughout the other worlds. The writing crisp, the characters are easy to visualize, and the main character is simply fun! Who would like to meet a mermaid? Start reading...
Original main character as a mermaid private detective. In this book we follow the detective through two cases and some of her history on how she became a mermaid
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
I like mysteries, and I like fantasy - almost all kinds. So I love books that have both:) But after reading like tons of fantasy/urban fantasy/supernatural mysteries you do find it difficult to come across a book that doesn't sound like another copy of stories you know almost by heart by now... So, although the premise of Silver Light sounded good I hesitated a bit before pushing the play button on my device... Unnecessarily - the mermaid detective turned out not only to be a breath of fresh air, she turned out to be a character I definitely want to read more about...:) There are many good things about the book: the main character for one. She has a past that we get glimpses of but do not really get to know fully yet, and she is not alone in her body; and the soul that dwells in her is even more mysterious and more intriguing - I definitely want to find out much more about Licinia:) Another strong point is the mystery itself - or rather the emotional bond that develops between Alexis and the girl who falls the victim of the crime our PI has to solve. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the unnecessary repetitions of some information (we got it the first time, you know:)) and the uneven pace of the story itself. That's why it's 4 stars for the story (or 4.5 to be completely honest with you). As for the narration by Ms Huston, it's very good. I liked the way she read the narrative parts and I liked most of the voices she gave individual characters. Also, the pace of her reading was spot on - it's one of those rare books when I did not speed the audio up:) So, in general, if you like parnormal PI stories in good interpretations, grab this one and have a great entertaining afternoon with your book:) DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This was a well written and wildly entertaining book with a unique main character. Alexis Silver is a private investigator, but she is very different from any PI you have ever encountered before. You see, Alexis should have died when a cruise ship she was on back in the 1920's sunk. Instead of perishing, though, she was turned into a mermaid. She lives with a resident Dark Master inside her brain as well as a link to salt water, eating live seafood (in lieu of human hearts) and a ten foot long tail.
Her latest case is the search for a couple and their young daughter, Hannah. When the man's parents come to Alexis asking for help, her maternal instincts kick in the minute she sees a photo of Hannah. This case is much more interesting than the cheating spouse cases that Alexis usually works.
The descriptions of Alexis in her mermaid form, her reminisces about her former life, the details of her transformation were wonderful. Anyone who thinks that mermaids are like those cute Disney cartoons will be shocked by the reality of Alexis and her cravings! I enjoyed the addition of her former husbands, who were a werewolf and a vampire, and her encounter with the original Dracula.
The mystery is full of intrigue and twists, the paranormal elements were great and the emotions were perfect. I will definitely be awaiting more adventures involving this wonderful mermaid!
The narrator did a wonderful job, with perfect pacing, great voices and spot-on emotions. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the authors/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
After finishing New Moon Rising which JR Rain and Matthew Cox collaborated on to tell the story of Samantha Moon prior to her being turned into a vampire, I immediately wanted to read Silver Light which was again written by both authors who in their own right are amazing. Silver Light is an engrossing story of Alexis Silver who was turned into a mermaid after a ship she was sailing on sank into the deep ocean. She has become a PI and along with the dark entity that has taken up residence in her, they become one kick-ass team of solving cases for those who need their service. This was a well written story with amazing characters. Alexis is so likeable that I can’t wait to read more of her in future stories. With her winning personality and calming ways to help people in need, you can’t help but like her. The new world of Alexis that JR and Matthew have created is nothing short of magnificent! Their writing techniques blend so well together and make the story flow flawlessly. If you are a fan of either of these authors or are just looking for an extraordinary new book to read, then pick up Silver Light and lose yourself in this amazing world of Alexis Silver!
Mishmash of Superhuman Abilities Crammed into a Mermaid and Into a Book
Silver Light feels like two guys got together with too many beers and decided to pick a new “class” of superhuman, and go with one so ludicrous there would be no competition in the genre. They chose, wait for it, a mermaid. Not just any old mermaid, but one that cohabits her psyche with a “dark master” from some ill defined beyond, throws in a marriage to a vampire, shapechanging skills, the ability to fog weak minded men with glamour to get them to forget themselves or remember an imaginary encounter. Throw in the ability to swim at 100 mph, grow a tail or claws at will, see the souls of both the dead and the living as flowing rivers of light. Blah, blah, blah….
It is almost as if authors Cox and Rain, decided to grab every odd bit and crumb of superhumaness from about 12 different books, ascribe all of these talents our fishy protagonist and then wove a ludicrous plot round them.
This is a poor new entrant in the fantasy genre with absolutely nothing to recommend it. Let there be no more silver light…..
J.R. Rain's Silver Light is a book and series that I keep coming back to mentally. She's a mermaid detective, figure that, but it works! Set in the same world as the Samantha Moon series (which I dislike due to angst), this book and series have a lightness juxtaposed with an ever so slightly dark tone that isn't overdone. There is a theme of nudity that is easily explained by the premise. In the 2nd or 3rd book she randomly takes a man home (not graphic) which I felt was random, unnecessary and objectionable, but otherwise I quite like the book and the series. The heroine, Alexis, is a believable but uniquely capable, unrestrained lady PI with a charming penchant for outdated terminology and a gift for finding trouble's cookie jar. A smarter and more enjoyable Lois Lane mixed with a more reasonable powered Superman. This book is worth a look.
I listen to alot of PNR and this takes a unique perspective on mermaid shifters. Alex is a private investigator who gets involved in strange situations. Thankfully she comes out just fine. The authors have done a great job of using old mythology and present day perceptions of merfolk, with a unique twist of additional "souls". I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to more from the authors. This book is the beginning of a series I have a great feeling about. Uses of old lingo from the past century are scattered throughout the book, and the uses are LOL worthy. Kelley Huston did an amazing job bringing Alex to life, with each character being unique and interesting to listen to. J.R. Rain and Matthew S Cox have written a great storyline with comical dialogue and interesting characters. Again, I highly recommend this book. Would I listen to this book again? YES Would I recommend this book to others? Yes, with no real reason for any age restrictions.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started listening I thought it would start at the point she was on the ship that sunk but was happy she gave her back story soon after . Alexis is kickass as a private detective and anyone that thinks she’s a push over for a young women are in for one huge awakening 😂 I love how her and her dark entity had the connection with Anna just from the photo and I hope to see the relationship between Anna and Alexis grow as the series progresses . This is a first for me from both authors although I do have other audiobooks I haven’t listened to yet . Kelly Huston was the perfect narrator I have several books narrated by her and she always does a great job . I am going to start book 2 now so watch out for my review 🙂
