In a world where peace and balance among immortal clans must be maintained, Immortelle, an ex-vampire assassin, seeks vengeance against an unseen enemy. John Wick meets Underworld in this mythical tale of blood and retribution.

I have been called many names in my long life.

Kali. Hel. Santa Muerta.

To the Cabal, I am simply Immortelle.

As the daughter of Nyx and sister to the Furies, I was used to being an ever-living weapon to the Powers That Be that run the Cabal.

As the mistress to War, Death gloried in the carnage I wrought as I danced with Mischief and Strife.

Until one day, I fell in love with a mortal human who called me by other names.

Lover. Partner. Wife.

He gifted me with love and peace, and I thought I could be happy.

And then too soon, he died.

I mourned his death for one year and one day.

On the next day, they came for me. Like I knew they would.

War. Death. Mischief. Strife.

Except they didn’t come to recruit me back. They came to tell me how my husband truly died.

Now, I have taken on another name… an older name… one that I hadn’t worn in a long, long time…

Nemesis.

Nemesis is an Urban Fantasy that takes place in a mythical New York City that shares space with the unseen forces of the Underworld. Vampires, Fae, Demons, Gargoyles, and Dragons make an appearance in one form or another.

John Wick with Vampires....

.......Yeah......it’s literally a paranormal take with entire scenes that are copied directly from the John Wick movie.....I mean, literally copied, to the point where it’s not even debatable. I didn’t even finish it because it was so copy/paste.....this is sad because I actually like her Brightling series, but this? Nope.......

Full Review on my blog!
*a copy was provided by the author*

Hmm…I don’t know how to feel about this book, this took forever to read, and I stopped reading at one point but kept at it, the ending turned around my opinion and now thinking of keeping an eye out on the second but wont rush it.

He was determined to learn what it was that Immortelle needed. Even now, as she lay dying, the need for love and belonging reeked from her soul. If she hadn’t felt like she had belonged before, she would damn well feel it now.

I started out with high hopes for this, since I’ve been recommended her books before, so I was pretty excited. But I was disappointed….

I liked it but not enough… well, I guess the second half of the book was a bit better.

The world the author created seemed pretty cool if I actually had understood what was going on, it kind of felt as if she was just jotting down ideas instead of fleshing them out into a story buuuut, the whole premise of the story had a ton of potential, I just wish it was done a bit better…

I read another review that said this book was John Wick with vampires and fairies which is exactly what it is. Good thing I enjoyed that movie! I do wish it could've been a bit more original but I love the characters. Can't wait to read the next one.

One of the things I love about this author is the attention to detail.

💯 Read for the 2019 MacHalo Splendiferous Book Bingo Thingie (MSBBT™) challenge over at the MacHalo Asylum 💯 •• 42. One-word Title [Bonus Card] ••

1.5 Stars

Send their best warriors to sell her on the idea of coming back. Make it all seem like a good ole time where they could have fun razing cities and dancing over the corpses of their enemies.
Ugh. She already had a lifetime of those memories. More than she had wanted to hold onto.
At the time it had seemed like fun—all that power over who got to live and who got to die. That was the problem. Immortality did strange things to your brain. It made you believe that you were better than mortals. And not just better, but entitled to more simply because you were harder to kill.

@13% [Chapter 2]

”In a world where peace and balance among immortal clans must be maintained, Immortelle, an ex-vampire assassin, seeks vengeance against an unseen enemy. John Wick meets Underworld in this mythical tale of blood and retribution.„

That ⤴ is how this was marketed and suffice to say I was fucking excited.

Then I read it.

Z558Z4s

The whole book was parts from the movies pieced together, which to fans would sound amazing, I know. Problem was the author removed everything interesting. Everything.

I started reading all excited like and I was waiting for the good stuff. I mean John Wick & Selene. Two things I absolutely adore. ⅓ of the book in and still nothing. "Ok" I thought, "It's coming, it's coming".

Any-Minute-Now

⅔ of the book in. More than halfway in the book. I kept waiting for something to happen.

Still-Waiting

Maybe it will be at the end, us seeing Immortelle being the badass we were promised, the unholy & awesome spawn of John & Selene. It would annoy me, cause waiting till the end to do anything just so people will go for the second book is something I hate with a passion, but I will settle for whatever I can gey at this point.

bored-to-death

It never happened. Immortelle never delivered and neither did anyone else. The whole fucking cast were supposed to be badasses, yet not a single one of them did anything. Funny enough Immortelle did the least amount i.e. she did nothing.

Ok, I am not being fair. She did something: she bemoaned and low key swooned every chance she got, and she got a lot of chances.

tumblr-npi8x6mu-XQ1tx3754o1-500

The cherry on top of this boring Sundae? At the end the author low key declared that if there aren't reviews for this she won't be going on with the series beyond Book #2.

0VPZVSs

Why do I care if this series continues? I don't honestly but what I do care about is that this behaviour is a BIG NO. You want to write & share the stories in your head with the world? Cool. You don't anymore? Also cool. What's not cool? Threatening your readers into reviewing so they can get the story. Real shitty thing to do.

Disappointed beyond belief with this one. I suggest you guys spend your time watching/rewatching the Underwold & John Wick film series instead of reading this. You will thank me at the end.

Nemesis (Immortelle Book 1) Kindle Edition
by Elle Cross
It isn't often a book just sweeps me away from the real world. Elle Cross, with her delicate but perfect world building and touching, immortal characters, managed a book that did that.

At 5:00 AM for two nights, I finally had force myself to put the book down to get a few hours of sleep, but I swear Immortelle and her men haunted my dreams.

Beyond the depth and complexity of the characters and the purity of the plot (although it held a very distinct resemblance to John Wick part one), her careful and incredibly light laying out of the rules of her world within in the story amazed me. It was done so deftly, it fell completely into the storytelling and was important to the story itself. I rarely see this. Normally, there is a frontload of the rules. Sometimes the frontload of the rules is easy to read other times, you feel like you have 50 to 60 pages, like the beginning of epic science fiction epics.

This is a hidden RH story. Not a flat out, hop in the sheets to move the story along, but a hard won love of Death, War, Strife and Mischief for the immortal woman they love.

Immortelle is a weapon, a living/immortal weapon. But she is more. Ms. Cross manages to collect all the stories of Goddess of destruction and rebirth to wrap Immortelle into their mythologies. As a mythology junkie, I adored this.

All of this gives weight to a story of revenge. Immortelle does what no one else has ever done and buys her way out of the Cabal, the group of Vampires that run the Otherworld. She does what John Wick did in his first movie, and wipes out a large army of Cabal enemies, in order to be with the man she loves. For 10 years was with him, until his death. And the Otherworld allows her to mourn for the traditional year and one day before contacting her. Then someone in the Otherworld tries to take her out. She embarks on her voyage of revenge as one of her guises as the Goddess Nemesis.

This only book one of what I hope is a very long, very deep exploration of the role of anger and revenge in the lives of one amazing woman

If I could give it more stars, I would. I was completely taken by Immortelle, Death, War, Strife and Mischief.

5 stars out of 5

The Book Nerd was floored by the intricate beauty, strength and Kurosawa like violence of this novel.

The book is as beautiful, and as dark and ominous, as the cover that represents it. And I have to say that this is one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen. The book is also one of the best and most beautiful that I have ever read. I do have to mention that this is not a book for people who enjoy happy ending and answered questions.
I am still not sure whether this is a heartbreaking paranormal romance with an urban fantasy feel or an urban fantasy with a paranormal romance feel featuring a heartbroken main character determined to have her revenge. Regardless, it masterfully written and plotted, carrying all the possible and impossible intrigue of the immortal creatures and their shifty politics.
I love the author's expression and her writing style, which portrays beautifully the timelessness of the characters and their longevity, in the sense of the time that they have already existed. This expression gradually changes in order to reflect the current times, however, that timelessness aspect lingers and it works beautifully for the story.
Immortelle, the main character, is so incredibly complex and multilayered, partially due to her personality and partially due to her deliberate lack of certain memories. There is a number of very interesting and intriguing characters, which the author develops painfully slowly, in sync with Immortelle's perception of them.
The author's idea and the plot, as well as the background story are original, interesting, and gripping. The characters are amazing and the world is beautifully thought out and well built. This is one of those books that grab your attention and won't let you go until you reach the last page and then start following the author to see when the next book is planned to come out.
Maestra (Imortelle Book 2) is coming out in February 2019.

NEMESIS (Immortelle, #1), a treat for lovers of urban fantasy, sees the return of Elle Cross in her most promising, compelling and currently her greatest work. A definite page-turner which simultaneously speaks to the heart and mind. It will make you almost feel your mouth drying with thirst as you enter the world of Immortelle.

A richly satisfying and enthralling novel which follows the journey of Lucy (Immortelle), a former immortal assassin working closely with the four horsemen, who gave up everything just so she can live in peace, have a normal life and be with her one true love in the mortal realm. Immortelle is an astonishing and intriguing protagonist whose life begins to unravel after ten years of peace. Death, War, Strife, and Mischief, her past lovers, enter her life once more and help her overcome grief. Book one will focus more on Immortelle and Death. Drama, action, guns, poison, knife, heartbreaks, betrayals, twists and turns will happen. You will barely have time to recover for the twists before the next one beckons. The world building is astonishing and the characters are all well-written. It’s amazing how the book has the timeless ability to transport you to a different world which you could get lost to for hours.

Elle Cross definitely exceeded all expectations. I feel blessed to read such a masterpiece from a very talented author. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to the next book in the series.

This book is Frickin EPIC!! If I could give it more then 5 stars then I absolutely would. Such a creative and painful intensely emotional storyline. So many emotions that break your heart then make your heart race, so many that by then end of the book you have to sit and reflect on all the awesomeness you just read. The characters are imaginative and intriguing. Lucy or Immortelle is strength, vengeance and a whole host of other descriptive words I can't voice at the moment personified. This story is well written and thought out. I highly anticipated this release just on the cover and blurb alone. It is totally deserving of all the hype and more! I could not put it down, I started it at 9pm and finished at 5am and it was worth every sleep deprived moment. I can't get enough of the cover it is absolutely gorgeous. Immortelle's story is beautifully told and although the ending kind of gave me heart palpitations. Now I need more of her story and where it is going to go I can only imagine. An absolute must read and I already added this one to my reread list. I can't wait to see what is going to happen in Maestra! I mean the cover for it is phenomenal and I can only imagine the story will no doubt be the same. If you haven't figured out how I feel about this book by reading this then I will just say I Love this story and can't wait for more!!

This is not for the faint of heart.
It's a dark tale; almost reminiscent of a Grimm fairytale but with mythology. Lol. Make sense? No? Ok... lemme try and explain. The Grim tales were actually, well... grim. They featured a lot of violence and very dark themes usually depicting world weary people who are put in compromising and morally ambivalent situations. And Immortelle has that same underlying theme.
Note, Elle Cross writes exceptionally well. Her prose is smooth and VERY descriptive. Because of this, some may call her work... slow - as in, it takes a bit to get into it. This isn't a book to speed-read through. There is a lot of character development and world building involved, and for some this is too epic fantasy. But it's truly a world you don't want to miss.
And I'm moving on, now. Lol.

This book is an emotional rollercoaster and it's a very painful journey for Immortelle. However, she is a complete badass who also happens to have support from some devastating and powerful Horsemen.
It's a journey of painful memories and past life experiences. In which, Immortelle is trying to gain back.
Heat level: there's a certain scene that is just... powerful, full of emotion and passion. It's not descriptive, nor crass. It's just perfect because it is filled with a certain individuals longing for Immortelle.

This novel is FULL of intense feels. It's one ride you shouldn't pass up!

I’m not sure what it is about Elle Cross’s books but I always have a hard time sinking into the story until about the second chapter. The lead up and prologues are always so dry to me, but I ALWAYS push through it because it’s so WORTH IT! This book is fast paced, action packed and Lucy is one seriously bad ass female. Elle Cross is an extremely talented writer, the world building, attention to detail, the complex story line and the even more complex characters. Nemesis is about Lucy (Immortelle) whom was basically an immortal assassin and worked closely with the four horsemen. She gives up all she’s known for a chance at a normal life and the love of a man that will care for her, in the mortal realm. Many years later in an accident Lucy’s husband dies, while she is stuck in grief there are big stirrings happening in the immortal realm and they all have to do with Immortelle. This is basically where shit hits the fan and it turns into something reminiscent of that Keanu Reeves movie, John Wick. Tons of assassin drama, guns, knives, poison type stuff and the whole neutral hotel thing, epic. Very well done and I enjoyed reading it all, I can not wait for book two to come out!

Revenge served cold with white hot fury

Once again, the author knocks it out of the park! I love her take on this vengeance tale and, though it pays homage to favorites of the author's, it is wholly its own unique story! Once again, the main character Immortelle is fully realized, and I felt her pain and anger right alongside her. A tale of love lost, it spans unique immortal and mortal realms alike. Though it's a tale of vengeance and fury, the heart of the tale starts with love, and how far one woman is willing to go to redeem that love. The betrayals run deep, and she's only just beginning to realize all the cast involved. Of course, this tale is wicked and elegant, sharp and smooth in it's delivery, something I've come to expect from the author. The revelation at the end means our heroine will be tested to the end of her limits. I am hoping to see more with the males and sisters of her past, as she learns to navigate an uncertain future. A fantastic new series start, I'm salivating for more of Immortelle's brutal truth.

In this first book we get to know Lucy a little bit and from the begging the story is so fast paced and full of adrenaline that we have to follow through the end.
Lucy was once known by many names and the last one was Immortelle. She left the immortal world behind for love and other things.
So after 10 years of peace her life unravel and the story begins. About Death, War, Strife and Mischief they were her past lovers and do what they can to help her now. But we get little glimpses of them and in this first book we learn more about Death. And Fear is now an interesting new question mark.
The men are not the focus in this first book, this is more about Immortelle and her new role and quest as Nemesis.

Nemesis Is Absolutely Amazing!

No spoilers of any kind included!
Elle Cross has done it yet again and created another amazing masterpiece!
This book pulled me in after the first page and would not let me go until I had gotten to the end of the story, I absolutely love it when a book does that.
So many ups and downs and twists and turns that I actually forgot that I was reading a book, I felt like I was actually in that reality experiencing it all right along with Lucy aka Immortelle!
I definitely look forward to the next book in this series because I have to know what else happens to Immortelle, Death, Mischief and the rest of the men.
So yes I most definitely do recommend this book because I thought it was amazing and I think you will too!

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

This has some incredible world building and a heroine that everyone is afraid of. A strong woman is quite fascinating I must say and Immortelle lives up to expectation and more. Cross really draws the reader in from the very first page with some in depth character development place in world I could never dream of. Then the past starts coming into lay with the flashbacks drawing you in even deeper. I am so hooked by this point and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Great for urban fantasy fans. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

I didn't much care for Immortelle/Lucy's motivation for seeking retribution. It was too cliche and mundane for my tastes. I may have cared more for the death of Lucy's husband and the loss of her peace as a human if it had been elaborated on more in the story.

I did enjoy the fact that Lucy wasn't the typical goody too shoes heroine that fought for humanity no matter the cost and despite of the personality of the people she protected. She knew what she wanted done and took the steps to accomplish it.

I enjoyed the characters, especially Imortelle's lovers. I'd like to learn more about them and their roles as Immortelle's story moves forward. Looking forward to more in this series.

Another amazing release from Elle! Immortelle (Lucy) just wanted to live in peace and away from being the weapon that she used to be. However, there are others who wanted to get rid of her even with her living her peaceful life. There were some twists and turns and I felt so bad for Immortelle after she found some horrible information on what truly happened when she was living her peaceful life. And her old lovers, ugh I love Death <3 we only got a few moments of the others and I'm interested in what role Fear will have. Can't wait for the next book!

This is the first Elle Cross book that I've read and, man, am I glad to have found her. Nemesis is incredible. It's brilliant storytelling, with rich characters, mystery, intrigue, and a little spice and romance. There are just layers upon layers of plot that twists and turns as Lucy finds out more. Lucy really tugged at my heart with her simple wish for peace. And I cheered for her when she got a little justice, but that ending lets the reader know this is just the tip of the iceberg. Great reading! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This book starts with complete heartbreak, of which you add constant glimpses of throughout the book. But you still get the urge to keep reading just to see where she goes from here.
Immortelle loses her husband. The one she gave up her immortality to be with. All she wants is to live in love and peace, but she finds herself the victim of Assassin after Assassin. So she fights for revenge. She fights for freedom. And she fights for answers.
A great start to the series. I look forward to reading the next book.

This is an amazing story that is the starts of a new series. Imortelle ( Lucy) is an amazing character. There are just layers upon layers of plot that twists and turns as Lucy finds out more. The supporting characters were awesome. The storyline was also incredible.
Lucy really tugged at my heart with her simple wish for peace and love after her servitude. But it seems it not to be. Then there is the side of her that is total badass you don't want to mess with her loved ones. She's not evil but tired of being used as a pawn. I can't wait to see what Elle Cross has in store for book two!!!

Captivating!

I bought this book on a whim from a book club recommendation. That whim resulted in my finding a story that kept me involved and looking for more. Immortelle, Death, War, Mischief, and Strife...who would have guessed that the happenings of them would wrap me up in a story that OBVIOUSLY needs more installments. I was reminded of John Wick as I got to know Lucy, being pulled back into a life one chose to leave based on love. Elle Cross, I'm hooked! Time to check out your other stories, because you've gained a follower.

Chills. Literal chills reading this. The savagery, the heartbreak, the vengeance, the emotion. Whoa. Just whoa. Betrayal brought one of the most feared beings back into play and damn is she good. Elle Cross wrote an incredible story that honestly left me a tinge bitter that it ends in a cliffhanger. But that's merely because I want to see what Lucy/Immortelle does. I literally did not want to stop reading this.

A masterpiece..

I woke in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back to sleep. So I decided to read Nemesis. Bad idea! I literally couldn't put it down. Almost got my son off to school late and don't remember the rest of my morning routine because I was doing it on autopilot. I literally couldn't stop reading this!

The characters are amazing. I am going to make a bold statement but Lucy is my new favorite MC. By far. I love her so hard.

This was a great book! I also love Elle Cross's Brightling series, and I was excited to read Nemesis. The world was quite interesting, and I would like to learn more. The characters, especially the main one, Immortelle, were also quite intriguing. I can't wait for book two in February, as the story of Immortelle and her quest to unravel her enemies' plans and her husband's death continues! She's very powerful and kickass, and I can't wait for more of her story! 5 stars!
