Light Upon Light: 5 Master Paths to Awakening The Mindful Self

Rate this book
Light Upon Light is a book to touch the heart and awaken the spirit. It takes the lives of some of the great spiritual masters of the last millennium, from Rumi to 20th-century saint Darshan Singh, and illuminates their inner quests. More than simply biography, Light Upon Light delves into their perceptions of the world, the innermost workings of their minds, and the life incidents that led them to enlightenment. In this sense Light Upon Light is not about the spiritual path; it is designed to carry readers into the spiritual path and let them perceive the wisdom of the masters from within. While author Andrew Vidich, PhD, has exemplary academic credentials, he writes from the heart, and calls the reader to a direct experience, a "felt sense" of the core of these masters' teachings. He also emphasizes meditation as the universal constant taught by all masters and has provocative exercises in each chapter to stimulate self-reflection and contemplation and to give the reader experience of practical meditation techniques. This is a book to be treasured by both long-time spiritual students and those new to the great masters of the path.

"Light upon Light" was written by Andrew Vidich who has authored several books on modern mysticism and has taught courses in meditation, Islam, Religion and Death and Dying. Most importantly, the author studied meditation and spirituality for over 35 years under three spiritually illuminated Masters-Sant Kirpal Singh, Sant Darshan Singh and Sant Rajinder Singh. The focus of the author is not only to read the author's words but to embrace them in the deepest recesses of our being. The author has included spiritual exercises that will help the reader digest the teachings of the Masters on a very personal level. There are universal questions that are answered: Who am I?; Why am I here and where am I going? The author compels us to commit to the practice of meditation as and intellectual understanding of the Masters is insufficient to knowing the answers to the above questions. The author provides an excellent metaphor in the difference between an intellectual understanding of water and the experiential or tasting of water. We can study waters' characteristics, its molecular makeup, etc., but unless we taste it we never can have a true understanding of it. The author also states, throughout the book, the need of a spiritual Master in order to succeed on the path. I believe the author's knowledge, his association and training with a true spiritual Master, his presentation of the facts and outline of the meditation techniques makes this book especially compelling. I would highly recommend it.
