The renowned Chattaway girls of Pillary, Rora, Ida and Zela, must be married within one season to save their rapidly depleting family fortune. Rora, matchmaker and letter writer, presents a controversial pairing to the family rival, to raised eyebrows. Ida, the youngest, shocks them all by taking a man far below their culture. Zela, the beauty of the three, prefers the chase of being courted to the catch, so merely watches their comical failures wryly.

Enter long-lost Cousin Zisvis, the libertine and man of a thousand secrets, who seems to have the answers to every their dilemma.

Over six seasons in an 18th century speculative offshoot of England, 'The UP,' the Chattaway girls will tangle in love, friendship, and marriage. The sprawling, whimsical puzzle is playwright Aoki Khan's debut, and has been called, "A delightful and moving comical feast," "A whimsical take on Austen," and "Little Women's wicked twin."

I received an ARC copy of The Unweddable Chattaway Girls. It’s a comic historical fiction about a group of 18th century women who write letters to maneuver through society acquiring marriage. It explores themes such as friendship, unrequited love, family, sisterhood. The story, told over a year, includes several plots that weave in and out of it and an overriding plot of the main characters courtship with a sea captain over letters.
