Fans of well-researched and immersive Historical Fiction and Scottish Historical Romance, and those who enjoy Kathryn Le Veque and Donna Fletcher's Pict King novels, will love this series set in Dark Ages Scotland.
Multi-award-winning author Jayne Castel writes epic Historical and Fantasy Romance. Her vibrant characters, richly researched historical settings and action-packed adventure romance transport readers to forgotten times and imaginary worlds.
Jayne is the author of a number of best-selling series. In love with all things Scottish, she writes romances set in both Dark Ages and Medieval Scotland.
When she's not writing, Jayne is reading (and re-reading) her favorite authors, cooking Italian feasts, and going on long walks with her husband. She's from New Zealand, but now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I do not know why but I just do not like it. The leading lady is too angry, and the writing style while seems to be fine does not entice me to like or continue with this book. I can't get into the story.
ADULT Historical Dark Ages Scottish Romances💕 and Adventures🔪🐴
These three awesome books are historical fiction written to represent life and love 💘 during the Dark Ages, before Christianity and before the invasion of the Vikings. The people's in all three books live north of Britain on the Isle of Skye, called the winged isle at that time period.
There lives were extremely primitive, the main groups of people live in forts constructed around a broch, or tower, several of which still exist. These were precursors of the castle.🏰 Their homes are small round huts, probably mostly made of stacked stone. There are three main clans on Skye, the Eagle, the Wolf, and the Boar clans, and they are at times friendly and at other times they are at war.
Skye is a stark, weatherbeaten isle, and so are the people. Great series!
I enjoyed this journey back in time, and Jayne Castel certainly manages to create a very detailed and thorough setting in which she creates her stories upon the Isle of Sky. I was easily hooked into the first book detailing Galan and Tea's story and eager to read more about the warrior brothers of Skye. I enjoyed the second story immensely with the passion and fire between Tarl and Lucrezia. However, the book that will stay with me the longest, was the third one in the series. Battle Eagle, after reading the first two books was set up with a lot of anger and emotional tension that poured off the page right from the start. Donnel and Eithni are two characters who've been hurt beyond imagination, their pain and grief written with such emotional clarity, and their journey towards healing made so incredibly difficult with so much pain they must suffer along the road, it was a story of loss, and yet one with such hope, and strength of endurance that I struggled to put the book down and couldn't pull my mind away from their story even when I did. What Jayne Castel captured in these three stories, dove deep into the complexities of emotions, the soul which lies beneath the external and often torments us with conflicting desires that can tear us apart and bring out the worst of our natures. Read together like this the three stories build on each other to a highly emotional climax where it seems all hope might finally be lost but in reality, it paves the way in the darkest moments for renewed hope for peace and love, not just for the heroes and heroines but for humanity.
Book 1 was good with good characters and story line. Book 2 however, I ended up skipping about half of it. The characteristics of some of the characters from book 1 changed and the way the men and women acted in this book did not match any of the other books I have read from this same time frame. Men were dominate and they sometimes did not treat women well. Not in this book, the women ruled even though they were not the chief of the clan. Book 3 characters and story line came back to how most writers write this time period.
I have read these three books and loved all their plots and characters. I have immersed in them by two days and only released them when finished .I would like to make a comment about the festivities: the summer and winter times are not equinoxes, they are solstices
So I am now beginning the next serie about these characters offspring and I hope to be so interested about the new books as the just finished
Three stories, three brothers, three strong women. A reminder to us in technical age that life is ever elusive and can be cut short, changed or altered. The stories of love: Tea & Galan, Lucretzia & Tarl, and Donnell & Eithni.. To be fair, Donnell has had multiples lives which include Luana who have him Talor & Eithni who have him humility and peace.
I thought this series was very good. The plots were imaginative and kept you wanting to read more. The characters were well described and fleshed out. Also, the pairings were very good — the couples were very complementary to each other and well suited. I am glad I read this series although I’m not really interested in this time period. I prefer historical fiction where Christ is introduced into the main religious ethos of the time.
Each book by itself is a great read but the three together back for a great story. In the end it’s like one story with different main characters. It pulls you in from the start and keeps you until the end. If I had to pick a favorite book...I think it would be Battle Eagle...book 3. They both had troubled pasts and a lot to go thru and overcome. Great books and you should definitely read them.
I loved this series. What a great read! The brothers were all strong warriors, and very easy to fall in love with. The women were all strong too, but in different ways, and I loved watching the romances unfold. Once again, I was immersed in another time and place, sucked into the Winged Isle where I happily spent hours.
Thank you for another wonderful escape, Jayne Castel!
I highly recommend this historic series! I thoroughly enjoyed this series set in the era of the Picts. So many emotions in this book, anger, hate, grief and finally love. This series had it all!
The three tales about the Pict warriors, their clan , the battles and their lady loved made for an excellent read. While there is romance there is some great descriptions of the scenery and of everyday life. Makes me gratefully for life as it is today.
I enjoyed all three books. They are well-detailed so that you get a good sense of what the characters' lives are like. Characterization is really good as are the relationships among the various characters, especially the three brothers. The plot was fast-paced and kept my interest throughout, and there was a satisfying HEA in each of the books. Each book is a stand-alone, but it's helpful to read them in order. I've already started reading the first book in the series about these characters' children.
I enjoyed all three books of this series. Each of the brother’s journeys was different. I like how the author made the brothers similar in ways but oh so different in others. The story lines were so good.
Crisp, well written, and engaging. Great characters and beautiful descriptions of highland landscapes. Definitely would recommend. A very accomplished authxor.
The book brought it all back to me, my beautiful trip over the sea to Sky. I could picture exactly how the story could be totally true. A really good read.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this series — overall I am very happy with it!
The Characters
So each book has its MCs or “starring couple” yet as the series continues the cast grows and includes previous books starring couple. As one who LOVES a good epilogue, this writing style had me jumping up and down with joy!!
