Quote from the book : with the picturesque lighthouse on the other side of the parking lot and the ferry landing behind it, I felt as if I where in the world’s realistic painting. That is, until a crezed man ran past me muttering azure Blue, do into a jeep, backed up within two inches of my left foot, and carred out of the parking lot. 🌹🌹🌹
A young mother finds the body of her neighbour on the beach. A not so nice nighbour. So lots of suspects, even her sister-in-law. But without searching for it she gets involved. 🐳🐳🐳
A cozy mystery read with good character building and a heroïne who is rescuted by something you do not think of yourselve. I would not. 🌷🌷🌷

Jill Andrews’ sister-in-law, Desi owned the café, BeansTalk in downtown Ericksville, while her parents-in-law owned The Boathouse, which catered for weddings and functions. Jill’s husband Adam was away constantly with his job, so Jill quite often felt like a single mum to Mikey and Ella. The frustration of a neighbour of Jill’s who was on the town council, and his determination not to renew Desi’s lease for BeansTalk so he could have condos built there instead, was the precursor to a murder which involved Desi and Jill.

Could Jill discover who the murderer was and set the police on the right path? Or was she setting herself up for trouble?

Brownie Points for Murder is the 1st in the Jill Andrews Cozy Mystery series by Nicole Ellis, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Twists and turns, red herrings – I had no idea who the perpetrator was until I was almost at the reveal. This is my first novel by this author and I’ll definitely read more as I like her writing style. (The cover art was done by Katie W. Stewart of Western Australia - that's Goldie on the cover 😊) Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this story from Nicole Ellis. This is cozy mystery, and you get to know the main characters well. Jill Andrews is a stay at home mother, whose husband is gone more than he is home. She has two children. Her in laws ask her to help them with the family business, The Boathouse Event Center. Shouldn't be too bad, after all Jill is ready to do something else besides marketing. Her sister in law owns a bakery and is pregnant. Jill's first client wants her to work part time for him. He is building a huge condominium that will look over the small town of Pudget Sound. He is not well liked by many people. Then the condo are torched and his body is found dead....and a plate of brownies from Desi's bakery in his home. There is history between the two of them and it isn't friendly. Can Jill find the real killer and clear her sister in law who is now having complications due to her being pregnant and being the number one suspect in a murder? Thank you Hidden Gems for a copy of this story. I voluntarily read and reviewed it.

I read an ARC copy of this.

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. I liked the main character Jill. I loved the wonderful relationship with her sister-in-law. It's nice to see them get along. I was surprised by who did it. Then again so many people had a reason to do it. I hope the rest of the series is this good too.

This is the first in the series and the first time reading this author. The main character is Jill, mother of two, who get thrown into a murder investigation when her pregnant sister-in-law , Desi, is a suspect in the murder of the meanest man in town. She tries to figure out who did what the police come to question Desi and Desi ends up in the hospital because she almost loses the baby. Can Jill figure this out before it's too late ?

I don’t like this trend of luring me in by having a dog on every cover of books in a series only to find that the dog has little if anything to do with the plot. It’s like they know if they put a dog on the cover, the masses will buy. I’m one of those masses so I feel cheated.

It seems like every other cozy mystery is baking or knitting or has a dog or cat. Add a single-ish mom and evil real estate developer and a quaint town and you’ve your next best seller. I need something original people!

There are so many errors, contradictions, timeline errors, and “no way that would happen”s, self-absorbed idiocy that I’m not even bothering to note even a fraction of them. I am not exaggerating—every few pages would be a major one like she’s considering a full time job with one week a month travel even though in a short time she’s going to run the cafe while her sister in law is on maternity leave and she has a toddler and infant and her husband is away all the time on business (he’s a lawyer—where is he traveling to?) I do not judge working mothers—I was one—but at least one parent needs to be in town full time so the kids have some stability and don’t feel abandoned, especially such young ones.

She never really figures anything out. She happens upon a couple of things but the murderer is the one who tells her what happened in your typical reveal all.

I read it as fast as I could so I could finish it but I’m ver disappointed.

End of review, on to rant:

The PTA getting upset with her for a child frequently being late is not them being obnoxious. (I’m not talking about the one time there was a real emergency.) The child is going to preschool not daycare. Start times are not a suggestion but a rule. Plan to be a little early to allow for all the contingencies she has. It actually is more disruptive to be late to a class with little kids who are so hard to get on task to begin with. It’s not fair to the teacher nor to the students. Plus, what kind of message are you sending your kid if you’re late all the time? School isn’t that important? What you do now matters later on when what they learn is critical. And preschool is important.

When I had custody of my granddaughter and she went to preschool mostly for socializing, they demanded she always be there during certain hours. It was hard to do and still make doctor and dentist appointments , etc. But she was making all of her milestones and ahead on several.

When her father got her and school became less important, she missed half of kindergarten because he didn’t think it was important. He finally pulled her out and went on a massive road trip (instead of waiting until school was out). He was shocked when she got to first grade and was behind on everything. They almost kept her back but decided to give her special help instead.

School is important and starting kids thinking that way is also important.

I chose to read Brownie Points at this time for a couple of reasons. The start of 2019 brings about the start of yearly reading challenges, and as you see from my tags, I tend to enter a number of challenges. Also, the last book I read had a series of entirely too creative murders, so I was looking for something a little less intense.

The cozy mystery genre is one of my favorite and 'Brownie Points for Murder' is a great example of a cozy mystery. You've got your small town setting in Washington State. The main character is in love with a lawman, although this time two couple are actually married at the beginning. Jill's tight circle of friends is most in-laws, but they're nice folks

Her very pregnant sister-in-law, Desi, has trouble with her blood pressure (and don't I know THAT feeling.). Desi had suffered a miscarriage some time before, so everyone was naturally very concerned about her condition. The local LEOs come calling at a family supper one night, wanting to question Desi (downtown!) because some of her brownies are suspected of being poisoned and used in the murder of the town Scrooge. That went about as well as can be expected, so Desi went to the hospital and was put on hospital bed rest until delivery.

There were several sub-plots that made the story very interesting. Unusual and unknown family connections weaved in and out with sometimes secret business deals. Jill goes over several job opportunities and wonders about going back to work.

Jill was (and is) a great cozy heroine. I especially liked that she wasn't a 'Stepford' wife, all perfect and hello 1950's. It's kind of inspiring like those of us who have bad hair days, and whose last night of decent sleep was before our children were born, can have exciting lives too!

Discombobulated

Jill was tired of having to live like a single parent having her husband constantly working late ,she 's tired from being up in the middle of night with the baby then up early to take her son to preschool. She even helped out when one of the in-laws asked , but it was without her husband because he was always working late or out of town. Jill once had a career she enjoyed that she was supposed to be able too go back to, but didn't get to. She loved her husband, children and in-laws but she needed something more in her life something different. So this is what happened she finds a part time job, a dead body, a mystery involving murder, and someone breas into her home all in one week .this is a wanderfull cozey murder mystery with a broad aray of caracters and drama unfolding along the way. Pick up a copy and start enjoying "Brownie Points for Murder " you won't want to miss out on it. Kat

These brownies are to die for…

Jill Andrews put her career on hold for her family but her husband’s frequent job-related travel leaves her filling the role of a single parent and she is seriously considering rejoining the workforce, preferably part-time. Her sister-in-law is managing a successful coffee shop even though she is pregnant and her mother-in-law is an event planner and host with unbelievable baking skills. Jill loves their latest creation but willingly gives her plate of brownies to a grouchy neighbor to placate him when her son accidentally runs into his garden. When he is later found murdered, Jill is determined to solve his murder but the more she investigates, the more people become suspects and the more danger she is in.

This book was an enjoyable cozy mystery with relatable parenting problems and well-developed characters. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys cozies.

A real page-turner!

Jill’s a stay-at-home mom thinking about going back to work. Her very pregnant sister-in-law Desi is an amazing baker and has a cafe on the waterfront. Jill’s close with Desi, so when Desi becomes a suspect in the murder of a much-hated man, while also having pregnancy problems, Jill does everything in her power to help her out. But even in death the victim is a pain in the you-know-what…

It was well-written. A real page-turner! The book has a cozy, small-town feel; a lot of the story’s about kids and the café. I absolutey loved it! I did know whodunit about halfway through. I thought about deducting a star because of that, but I still enjoyed it so much that I’m giving the full 5 stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily posted an honest review.

Recommended for those who love mysteries & family life

I have not been reading much lately & had put this book on the back burner, forgetting about it. I got notice from Good Reads as to my opinion of the book. So I looked up the book to refresh my memory of it & found I had not read it. I love to read & decided to try to get back to reading & to start with this book.
This book was so good. I enjoyed meeting all the people & learning about their characters. It kept me enthralled & right there with Jill as she went through her ordeals. It wasn't slow moving & quickly got to the point.
This gives me a new author to read & I am thrilled. The proofreader of this book did an excellent job too, as I read reviews of people complaining of mistakes.
Thank you Ms. Ellis for a great & interesting read!

Stay at home mom Jill Andrews feels like a single parent with all the time her attorney husband spends away from home. To bide her time, she assists her in-laws at their event center and has been helping out her very pregnant sister-in-law at her bakery.

Her mother-in-law asks Jill a big favor, which somehow turns into a job offer by a not well-liked condo developer. Before her first day on the job, the condo units are torched, a body is found in the rubble, and somehow her pregnant sister-in-law is the main suspect.

This cozy mystery is filled with loveable characters, a main character (Jill) that is very relatable, and a mystery that kept you guessing until the end.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Crazy Family Life

Jill finds her neighbor's body, just as her sister-in-law is placed on bed rest in the hospital to stabilize her high risk pregnancy. Desi, though 30 weeks pregnant, is a suspect in the murder so Jill starts juggling her two kids, helping with the in-laws 2 businesses an absent husband traveling for his law firm and a murder investigation to get the suspension away from her family.
Her desire to work outside of her home and the stress of being almost a single mom make it clear the struggles women face in the present day 2 career family our society is accepting as the new normal. Very well written!

Lots going on in this housewife's life--and her husband was off traveling. Luckily her in-laws were the best and never said no to babysitting--her sister-in-law was pregnant and because of the meanest man in town (who happened to be Jill's neighbor)--thought he would not extend the lease to her store. Well said monster was found dead ---by Jill's dog just after she had delivered some brownies to him from her sister-in-law!

She really needed to go get a job-and she did--part time right near her son's pre school--then there was a fire and someone died in that fire--but she still had the job.

This cozy who done it is an easy read that will keep you guessing until the very end!

Great Cozy Mystery

A great cozy mystery. A mom of a three year old boy and a baby girl, whose husband is constantly out of town trying to woo clients to make it as a Partner, yearns to go back to work. (I so totally get that I-don’t-talk-to-adults-anymore vibe too!) Her very pregnant sister in law has a complication with her pregnancy after being suggested as a suspect in a murder. Can our heroine find the real killer?

Desi is upset, that the lease on her bakery he won’t let it be renewed, he didn’t like that they painted the shutters yellow. Wants to tear down and put condos in. Jill’s husband is gone a lot, she wants to get back to working.
Part time is offered by in laws at the event center. Event is being planned for 200hundred, and she goes to see what they actually want. One partner reeks of alcohol, arguments, what is going on. Then one turns dead, and Desi with her brownie is a suspect. Nice flowing plot, with family members.

Great mystery with lots of surprises!

Intriguing story of a man being murdered who no one liked, and pregnant Desi was a suspect. She is very pregnant and is put on bed rest at the hospital. Jill, her sister-in-law, has decided that she would try to find the real murderer. Then there is Nancy, the Queen Bee PTA mom, adding conflict in the story. Nicole Ellis writes with a sense of humor. The description of her characters are so realistic and the plot thickens and suspenseful. I really enjoyed this book, and I am sure you will also. Happy reading!

A really good book. It makes you turn the pages to see what will happen next. When someone as disliked as Samuel Westen is murdered, a whole town suddenly become suspects. The characters in the book are great. The small town feel of the story and the great descriptions of the Puget Sound area make you feel like you know the area. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am looking forward to reading a lot more of her books.

I really enjoyed this story. Jill is an overworked stay-at-home mom of two, her husband is always gone traveling for his job, her sister-in-law is pregnant, and then she ends up finding the body of her not very nice neighbor while out walking the beach behind her house. When the police suspect her sister-in-law, will Jill be able to find out who the real murderer is? This one kept me guessing right up until the end. Highly recommend.

Not what I was expected

The story has a very slow build, and I felt they were trying to hard to remind everybody that they were basing the story in Seattle, I honestly was bored throughout the entire story, as I said I wanted to like there’s a lot of the character development, the plot growth and mystery felt extremely forced

I enjoyed the book, But I was wanting a bit more grit, I found the main female was a bit weak, I wanted her to show Fancy Nancy she was a great Mother, and she was good at her job.
I kind of knew whom was the first to die, I had hoped it was going to end different,

Enjoyable read

A fun little read, nothing too complicated. Occasionally a bit too descriptive, but not too distractingly so. Some parents of preschoolers will likely understand the main character's struggle with her child's school.
