He's killed three men in the few days she's known him. Yes, it's self-defense. But when he tried to kill her, it wasn't. Her peaceful mountain refuge has been invaded, her inexplicable nausea linked to his physical presence. She's captive in his house for her "protection," with a churning stomach, his bad attitude, and no safe way home.
All that changed the night the stars aligned.
Now he's talking about ancient bloodlines and celestial alignments ... and other things she only believes because of what she's seen him do. He's heading out for revenge against the family who wronged him, and he needs her help. All she has to do is ingest one homemade dissolving tablet to allow him into her mind—to train her to be just like him.
The answer would be a definite no if she had anything of her world left. If she hadn't fallen in love with him.
Kay Camden is equal parts writer, reader, and metalhead, who believes the best stories are love stories and all heroes must have a cool car. She writes twisty plots with smart heroines, haunted heroes, ancient feuds, forbidden love, magic, and revenge. She lives with her husband, two children, and an assortment of four-legged creatures in the middle of the U.S.A. next to the mighty Mississippi River. Other interests include learning the Irish language and listening to a lot of industrial/synthwave electronica and progressive/melodic death metal the only way those types of music are meant to be played: LOUD.

Don't let the 3-star rating turn you away--I recommend this.
The Alignment series is a romantic urban fantasy.
Now let me tell you: I am not ordinarily a fan of anything romance-centered, as it just can't hold my interest. I'm all about a good romance, only if and when it's on the side of an action-packed plot. It's too overbearing and cliche otherwise.
But this series.
The plot is compelling because of its focus on family and its emphasis on nature vs. nurture. Camden's writing style is simple but impactful. Her characters are massively flawed but also incredibly mature. There are plot twists left and right. I read all the released books in 1 week, and was so attached that I immediately reread them.
I'm an avid reader and a bit of a mean critic.
But this series.
I can't express how much I recommend it. People deserve to read this and Kay Camden deserves more recognition.
4 stars Ok, I've been going through a horrible period because I couldn't find anything to read. Actually I did find books, I just didn't like them. It's awful. But then I found this book. I must say that the description did not fit almost at all with the content of the book. I started it expecting one thing, and it turned out to be another. But not in a bad way. Well, it was weird. That is the first thing that comes to mind. And I really didn't know in what shelf to put it. I mean, it is fantasy because it has magic powers and shit but it doesn't focus on those elements and if there wasn't all the talk about immortality and prophecy I would completely forget about it. This book is kind of complicated but I liked it and it held my interest. With all the fails lately this book came as a surprise. Now, the writing was the reason this book doesn't deserve 5 stars. It's confusing. And some things are not explained properly. And the author jumps from one thing to another really fast and it's hard to keep up. For example, the character gets to work or something and we don't see what she does there. Fine by me. It's not important to the story, we only have to know that she went to work. But then the author jumps to the moment she leaves work and there is no space to show that some time has passed! In all the other books I've read there was some free space between rows to show that there is a change. I don't know why this bothered me so much but it did. The characters Liv is pretty likable. She's thrown into some weird and incredible situations but she's strong and knows how to handle it. Even though her reaction when she found out everything about Trey is kind of unrealistic. Trey. Now that's what I call complicated. He's so moody and switches from hot to cold so fast that it's hard to keep up with it. I like him. And after all the shit that happened to him it's not a surprise that he's like that. I hope he doesn't screw everything up in the next book. The story was interesting and original for me. I'm curious about what will happen next.
Oh, and the ending was just.... I have no words. I have to read the next book! Enough said.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Liv and Trey are both running away from dark pasts and when their lives literally collide in the small town Liv has just moved to, the wrong kind of fireworks go off. They find that they can't stand each other. Being around Trey even makes Liv physically ill. But because of Trey's family issues, Liv has now been linked to him and those that want him dead, want the same for her, forcing her to stay with him for protection.
The first few chapters of this book immediately hooked me. I loved the writing--the descriptions and the dialogue lured me in with their deliciousness, along with the way the supernatural elements are quietly, subtly teased out. It was a sexy reading experience--like plot foreplay--even before the stars aligned and Trey and Liv's relationship changed, and it all left me craving more as I turned each page.
But alas, it would not be for some time that this more would come to pass, no matter how many pages I flipped through. "Now he's talking about ancient bloodlines and celestial alignments..." reads the blurb, only, the "now" doesn't happen very nowish, I soon realized, and so all that lovely foreplay started to get very tedious. All of the events described in the book do occur just as the blurb promises, but with so much padding in between. I'm all for tantalizing delayed gratification--which is exactly what Trey and Liv have to struggle with once the stars align, but the book could have done with far less of the descriptions of the day-to-day activities that Liv and Trey have to deal with to finally get where they are going.
And where is that, exactly? What is it we're dealing with here? Trey's explanations are vague at best, with a lot of wait and see that Liv has to accept at face value. Fortunately, their new found supernatural connection allows her to deal with and accept what ought to be giant red flags. The process of the two falling in love, while it is a sudden and overwhelming switch from despising each other so thoroughly, isn't an entirely painful process for the reader. Liv's fawning over Trey isn't simply the cloying action of a lovestruck girl, even if that love seems to have magical origins. She still maintains a rational mind that we get to see much of in their altering POV chapters. As this is considered an urban fantasy, hot sex between the hot main characters is to be expected, but, even though it, like everything else, is dragged out, I do appreciate Camden's skills with writing scenes that focus on the sexy and the seduction, rather than just the sex.
But, as it turns out, I am an instant gratification kind of girl, so the long drawn out plot didn't work for me. I am all for character and relationship building, but I don't need the added details of what's for dinner.
The blurb does NOTHING to actually portray this book's crazy plot twists and white-knuckle thrills. LOVE Trey's character! Makes me think of a modern day Mr. Rochester...with a twist. Liv is one of the very few female protagonists I've ever enjoyed reading. Normally, females read as ingratiating and pouty wimps. Liv is kick ass! And so witty! I'm on to the next book to see what happens!
4 stars. A wonderfuly different fantasy romance for Adult/New Adult. Larger than life characters and a complex unusual storyline will have me hanging until the next part of this series is released.
Well, after a couple of rough starts with books that I just couldn't get into, it was really nice to be sucked into this one, almost from page 1. There was just something about these characters that grabbed me. And the way the story is written... it makes it very hard to put down, because you really don't know what to expect next.
I thought about knocking one star off, for the crazy cliffhanger ending... but I knew I would be buying the second book in the series before I even got to that point. In fact, I've already started on it. ;-)
I don't usually read urban fantasy – or romance – however I am Goodreads friends with the author. I like a lot of what she has to say about books we've read in common so I decided to give her own book a try. The Alignment centres on Liv Gilchrist, a slightly paranoid-neurotic nurse who is trying to resettle her life from Chicago to rural Montana following a personal tragedy and the end of a long-time relationship. Upon arriving, she quickly finds herself caught up in the drama of local loner, bad-boy, construction worker Trey Bevan – all of which, following a mysterious invasion of her home and her subsequent relocation to Trey's home for her supposed protection, comes to take on an increasingly supernatural turn.
I liked Liv as a character. She was sensible and resourceful and although not a tough-as-nails badass, didn't allow herself to be totally controlled by any of the male characters. I was also intrigued by her paranoia and constant belief that she was going to die in some horrible and horribly unrealistic way, however she seemed to eventually grow out of that, for it wasn't really present from the midpoint of the book onwards. I can't say I was in love with Trey – he was a bit too alpha for my tastes in both his actions and his attitude, and he had some definite anger-management issues. However he was also an organic gardener and grew his own herbs, so he couldn't have been completely as bad as all that. And ultimately, he and Liv did seem good together.
My biggest issue with this book is that the overall story of Liv and Trey's destiny together and the full nature of the prophecy that foretold it, which I was interested in, didn't come nearly fast enough for me. The first third of the book felt long and slow to me because of this. I was left with so many questions as various hints of supernatural phenomena took place – questions that were very long in being answered and explained, assuming they were answered at all.
I initially had a hard time getting a sense of just how paranormal the story world was, for although it seemed like normal everyday life, Liv didn't react nearly as shocked and confused by some of the things that happened as I would expect (especially for one so paranoid). In addition, there was so much more I wanted to know about both main characters. Their back stories were briefly mentioned here and there, but I would have liked a deeper dive into this. Particularly about Trey, who is the story's supernatural epicentre. What exactly is he? A witch/wizard, or something else entirely? How/why did his family come to Montana? Will the fulfilment of the prophecy have an effect on the wider world beyond just his family and allies and enemies? What's the deal with River, his seemingly sentient guard dog?
These sorts of questions, so the author has informed me, will be answered in subsequent books in the series, of which there is a planned five. This book does is not a standalone story (done by the author's design), which is not my preference (I like more of a contained arc and conclusion for each installment of a series).
Ultimately, although not the genre for me, the story looked to be going some interesting places. The latter quarter of this book saw the introduction of key new characters and some important revelations about both Trey and Liv, so for fans of romantic urban fantasy, this might be just the thing.
I received this book free from a Goodreads giveaway.
The Alignment by Kay Camden kept me turning the pages. It begins with Liv Gilchrist moving from Chicago to Black River Montana searching for a fresh start. Her fate collides with that of Trey Bevan when his truck runs a red light directly into her car. Their initial dislike for one another (hers is both emotional and physical) resolves as their secretive pasts and a longstanding prophecy is revealed. Told with changing POV, it did sometimes seem disjointed and confused. A little more back story would have fleshed out the characters more making me more invested in their fates. But the story moved along quickly and kept me interested and engaged. It was not one of those books that I HAD to read over sleep or food, but it was a story that I had to keep reading.
The book is not a standalone story, only part one in a five part series. I know many do not enjoy reading a series where the book ends with a cliffhanger. While part of me wants all the answers NOW, I think I fall in love when there is both something for me to wonder about and time for me to wonder. When a story concludes I file it, the characters, and the author away; sometimes coming back but just as often not. If a book leaves me on a cliff and I have become emotionally involved, my imagination brings those characters to life, living out possible outcomes in my mind as I impatiently wait for the next installment. This book ends with one of those cliffhangers, with more unanswered than answered questions, and left me wanting more. Since the next couple of books have already been written, my initial wait will not be long…
A friend recommended this series to me and said how much she enjoyed it so I decided to pick it up. I did enjoy it myself, however I found it slow reading with the story, and slightly confusing in stages. It is however a riveting read and I found it hard to put down. It is an interesting story, and I've not read anything like it before. I will read the next book in the the series, especially as it does end with a cliffhanger ending, but it's not something I'm going to dive straight back into. This book has given me very mixed feelings which are hard to explain but it's definitely intrigued me enough to want to know what happens next.
I'd give this 2.5 stars if that was possible. Nothing particularly wrong with this story except it's way way way too long, and near the ending I was skimming. There were plot points where it was very vague what was going on, which is amazing considering how long this book was that a few more sentences couldn't be used to explain things. I read it on my e-reader and would love to know exactly how many words this book has.
Kay Camden had me from the opening paragraphs. She knows how to tell a good story and this is one of my favorite types of books because if you dont finish it in one sitting you know it's waiting for you and you cant wait to get back to it. It was offered for free on Amazon but I heading off now to purchase the next book in the series.
For quite a bit of the story you really don't know what's going on with Trey- who he is, what he is... That mystery alone keeps you turning the pages. The chemistry between him and Liv is intense, weird, and funny. Still very curious about Liv's history. Jumping right into the next book.
Loved this book. Interesting mix of adventure, romance, magic and fun. Enjoyable characters and nice story development. Can't wait to read the next book.
Another paranormal book about an assassin and the "fated" love of his life, a woman who is unwittingly thrust into his path as she is escaping an abusive relationship. Mistrust and trustworthiness, kindness and brutality and other jarring juxtapositions are well-written but strain the liimts of believablity...much like Mission Impossible and Jason Bourne. It seems that "good" people can do awful things for "good" reasons and without any consequences. Definitely escapist (beach) lit...and just as definitely an escape from rationality. What is it that makes this kind of writing so compelling? As a Christian, I am the more and more puzzled by how this is so common, firstly, but secondly, and much more disturbing, why I take the time to read this kind of fantasy. The Lord of the Rings...this is not that at all!
I really enjoyed the ride. This book was amazing. The story far exceeded my expectations. I thought my family was a mess. Trey and Live make a great team. I'm on to the next book.
Trey and his Family are living a big cover-up Lie.. Lies have a way to come to Life when it's least expected. The best recovery of a Family,, such a great reading..
The audiobook narrator of the female POV is fine but while the male POV narrator isn't terrible, he has the unfortunate habit of reading this like a generic bodice-ripper which it really isn't despite its many flaws. The worst part is how he voices the FMC like she is a brainless blonde lovestruck bimbo which is really not how she is written at all. But this is not the reason for my rating. I just couldn't with the plot when it went off the rail into plot-hole nonsense land.
I agree with a lot of other reviewers in that this was not what I expected. The blurb had me expecting something totally different. Regardless, this book was a little strange and the writing was a bit choppy. The MCs weren't my favourites- the H is a moody jerk oft times and the h is a freaking doormat. Her reactions to the truths in the H's life indicate a lack of self preservation on her part. Nevertheless, I will continue on with this series. Call it book chemistry or whatever you want, but I enjoyed reading this book quite a bit.
What I liked: 1) The alternating povs. 2) The writing, while choppy, was interesting. 3) I like that the magic/paranormal aspect of this isn't too heavy. I might not be able to suspend disbelief otherwise.
What I didn't like: 1) The h. She is a doormat. 2) A few too many lies and secrets. I had a hard time keeping everything straight after a while. Very dramarific.
Oh wow! I liked this book way more than I thought I would. When it came to Aaron I sort of guessed what would happen but it wasn't obvious more so what I was hoping for. Trey takes sexual healing to a whole new level and I loved his character and I like how hard it is for him to resist Liv. I enjoyed the bits of sarcastic humor but the one thing I didn't like is how it ended because I don't like cliffhangers it means I have to wait for the next book to finally get a sense of relief about Liv. Rude rude rude lol. Great story though.
Thank you Goodreads first reads and Kay Camden for advance copy. To be honest it took me a quarter of the way to get into the unusual storyline. I was confused by the lack of detail. I turned the book over more than once to look at the thickness and wasn't getting it. The big P for patience. Wow, then it all started to fall together. I was guessing and assuming too much and being on target. Then the plot took turns and surprises to hold my attention. What a cliffhanger and I am participating to read more.
Wow!!! I don't even know where to start with this book. I wish I could give it more stars. Beguiling, mysterious, funny, dark, deep are just some of the comments I want to leave. I would put it down and be thinking about it so had to pick It up again. I would be guessing about who or what he is (I hate vampire books and was hoping he wasn't one) but thank God I was wrong each time.
All I can say is that am continuing reading this series. Also I would recommend it to everyone just don't let the blurb deter you ... it's worth the effort.
I was hooked on this book the moment I started reading it. The story was great, different from a lot that I've read. I loved the characters, Liv and Trey. Their relationship was wonderfully written. I liked the dual POV as I loved seeing into Trey's mind and what he was thinking. I read this book in less than 24 hours and can't wait to start the next one.
I have been recommending this to all my friends and would urge you to pick it up. I don't think you will regret it.
This is a bit of a fantasy. About a woman who falls for her captor. I enjoyed the book as it keeps the reader interested. The story takes place in Montana, a place I am familiar with. I would recommend this book.
This is a rather lengthy book with plenty of action and mystery. Hopefully the second book in this series will tie up mysteries surrounding Liv 's past. A unique story.
Some parts are pretty cryptic but still all in all it’s a good and interesting book, I liked the characters and the plot after I figured out the changes in narration.
