Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.

My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.

I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.

I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes.

Damn, this was bad

Worst book I've read in a long time. The writing was tedious. The dialogue was cliche. I'm not sure how this author is supposedly a best selling anything. I wish I could reclaim the hours of my life I wasted reading this.

Confusing

I tried to finish the book and got as far as 94% in. I almost made it to the end before I was overwhelmed by 2 major questions. The first question that I kept asking myself is "What genre is this supposed to be?". The second question that distracted me more and more was "What is the audience for this book?".

The writing style is simple and works perfectly for a YA/Tween/Teen paranormal extravaganza that blessedly, doesn't include vampires. The language, characters and interactions don't work as well for an adult novel.

The novel might be an urban fantasy (not really), paranormal romance (in the making), paranormal thriller (a stretch) or a funny fantasy novel. I couldn't figure where the story fit on the spectrum.

The story has a great premise, with soul reapers living in a reaper community, alongside witches, demons and some other supernatural creatures. Throw into the mix family drama and the problems associated with social climbing and you've got a fun mix.

Unfortunately, the (almost) twenty year old main character responds to circumstances more like a struggling fourteen year old. That seems a stretch for a YA/etc novel but it could work. The contradiction between her mental state and the actions that she takes, grew until I spent more time trying to understand who she was rather than what she was doing.

The writing style was classic tween/teen breeziness but the story centering on a twenty year old with guilt issues sort of demanded more, I felt. The plot was thin for an adult novel but the story almost demands adult writing.

The two sets of contradictions tore my concentration away from the simplistic plot, which became more of a fairy tale/fantasy, page by page. Another reader might get a fun read out of this book but probably not the series.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but quickly found myself caught up in the intrigue as Christina, a reaper whose powers don’t work how they should, struggles to save her parents from the repercussions her failure to reap her first soul creates.
Tasked with finding an artifact or facing the consequences, she crosses paths with a new friend who is the spitting image of her dead best friend, a witch, a demon and a few faces from the past in her efforts.
A quick and entertaining story, my biggest complaint is that it ended on a bit of cliffhanger- luckily, the next book is available! Can’t wait to read the next in the series!

I really liked how fast paced the plot was--I was never bored with this book, in fact I stayed up far later than usual just to get one more chapter in (read: many more chapters in). I liked how inspite of Christina's circumstances and the more and more dangerous crap she gets herself into, she manages to come out of it somewhere in the middle (not unscathed and not on top, but alive and fighting for herself). I also really liked how Christina seems to be a Reaper with a conscience. Not only that, but that the power that comes naturally to her is in direct conflict with her Reaper powers. It made for an interesting twist and probably the one thing she had the most trouble with accepting: that she's different, but not necessarily in a bad way. And while, I don't want to give away any spoilers, I will say: Christina is basically the one female book character that you find yourself constantly rooting for. She's the ultimate underdog; but also fiercely determined, unexpectedly loyal, heartbreakingly broken, and justifiably haunted. I honestly, can't wait for book 2 and to see if Christina and Charlie are able to outfox a Demon and an all-signs-point-to-yes corrupt Reaper Council!

The fate of Earth and other worlds lie in the hands of a misfit reaper, scorned by her powerful parents because of how different her powers are. She can bring what has been reaped back to life. She can find what she's looking for, inside her mind. And she is the only reaper she knows who hates reaping. But as her abilities get her into trouble, she either has to find four artifacts for 4 elements, or the people she cares about will die.

Filled with panic, snark, and several modern references, Reaper of Earth will draw in readers. As a modern fantasy, it brings forth stories of old and stories of today's cultures. I saw only one thing wrong with this, and that was the few grammar errors I found. I highly recommend to fantasy lovers.

This book had me laughing, but not in a good way. Christina feels more like a young teenager than the twenty year old she's supposed to be. The writing itself feels rather juvenile. The dialogue was cheesy and unrealistic.

What got me to start skipping ahead was when she had to make a choice between using a demons help or a witches. The back and forth and "hmm, let me think about that" felt like a way to try and make the book longer.

Overall, not that great of a book. I won't continue the series.

When I heard this was a book on Reapers, I was really intrigued coupled with the neat cover. It started a little slow, but I had already promised myself I’d finish the book no matter what. For starters, I would put this book in the YA/Teen section with the exception for some language & violence. Christina doesn’t have any romantic interests in book 1. I will start with the fact that I haven’t listened to Shelley Reece before, and she did a pretty good job narrating. She has a lot of emotion and does a good job sucking you in at exciting scenes.

The main character, Christina, is just so hard for me to connect with as an adult. She’s supposed to be 19, almost 20, but she honestly acts like my daughter did at 14. She’s so mousey and submissive to her parents who are complete jackholes. The downright verbally and emotionally abuse her, and her attitude towards it is more discouraging than empowering when she later finds her voice. There are so many more opportunities to expand on the world she’s created, but a lot of it is focused on her relationship with her parents, and turmoil over her past. She continues to flounder through her situation and it takes 2/3 of the book for her to confide in anyone. Christina spends most of her time at her house, leaving to do something, get scared, and run back home, only to decide she needs to get something else done and leaves again. She’s been “training” her whole life for her Reaper abilities, but seems completely naive about other supernaturals, even though they reap their souls too. There’s so many unfinished and unexplained aspects about Christina, her abilities, and situation, that it’s just hard to continue with the series. If I wasn’t wrapped up in a series already, I’d probably keep reading for something to do, but I wasn’t honestly driven to continue the series. Sadly.

This was a fun story with an interesting take on reapers. I did feel the MC, Christina, acted younger than she was. I think it could have benefited by her being almost 18 instead of almost 20, or acting a little older.

The narrator isn't my favourite but she did do a good job differentiating characters. Overall it was a good listen.

Where do I begin with this review *sigh* 🤦🏼‍♀️

I was really looking forward to reading this series because the description sounds really interesting, however the execution has much to be desired. 2/5 stars because the premise was good, the rest not so good.

Let's talk about the writing first. There are too many details shared in the wrong scenes and not enough in others, here are a few examples:
- When she took a shower the scent of her shampoo was described, next she washed her body, then stayed in a bit longer for the warmth. It should have simply been written that she took a shower and stayed in a few extra minutes to enjoy the warmth, we all know how showers work.
- All the steps taken to make breakfast and get it to the table, except she didn't write that milk was poured into glasses before they drank it, only nitpicking because everything else was detailed about the eggs and toast.
- All the steps taken to get from the kitchen to the garage to get in the car.
- The description about the meeting room in the Elders mansion was confusing (I don't know why but it was) and every time they go in there clothes are described like it matters what the evil overlords are wearing.
- The same scent is used to describe her mother and her best friend, but only once each time.

The conversations between people sounded like a scooby doo cartoon, you know where everything said is purposely obvious so a 4 year old can understand what's happening in the show. Same with at least half of the conversations in this book. Ugh.

The main character say sorry ALL. THE. TIME. I understand her parents have told her over and over that she's a failure, but the author could have dialed it back a bit to make her interactions easier to read.

The parents. Yes some parents are selfish, self absorbed, and emotionally unavailable. But if her parents were SO concerned about their reputation why aren't they more involved with making sure she succeeds with her quests instead of just leaving her to figure it all out on her own?

The main character doesn't know how to be honest. She's always hiding her initial reaction or response because of any number of stupid excuses. It's a wonder she had a best friend let alone any friends with her inability to be straight forward with people. She also doesn't ever ask questions to find out more info about anything.

She also doesn't pay attention to her surroundings or learn from her mistakes. The demon she's doing things for just told her he could teleport anywhere he wants whenever he wants and she starts talking about having to find transportation. Twice.

And if Charlie ends up being her love interest, then gag. According to her he has put her down her entire life and she has had no pleasant memories with him whatsoever. He sounds like a bully who doesn't know how to manage his emotions. And how the heck does he know about the artifacts?! If he's being nice now all of a sudden, and doesn't end up as her love interest, then he has his own agenda and I'm guessing it's not good.

I'm guessing the author had a friend read it to give feedback, because if this went through a publishing company shame on them. There were also awkwardly written sentences and I kept saying to myself, "Really?!"

I did finish this book but I won't be reading the rest of the series. I'm already feeling frustrated and anxious from reading just this one. Reading shouldn't be stressful, time to move on.

Note: I do want to give this author another chance though because she's going to be at a book signing convention I'm going to later this year, which is where I discovered her last year. I'll try reading her other series, but I'm going to wait a few weeks to allow myself to get over my unfavorable feelings for this book.

Interesting premise with the whole being a Reaper scenario, and I enjoy the adventure aspect of searching for magical artifacts. The whole story is told in Christina’s POV; she’s around 20 years old, but she seems younger. Naivety and her tendency for making decisions too quickly cause major problems for Christina; she annoyed me at times, too much of a teenager. Very YA type of feel to her. She does have some moments of strength, but overall, she seems weak to me. Pretty much everyone treats her like trash; her parents included, and she just mostly puts up with it. Maybe this is one of those series that she’ll grow throughout the series, but I wanted to see more of that by the end of this book. I wanted to like her, but she makes it hard; especially when she’s making deals with some majorly untrustworthy and unsavory characters; demon and witch types. Christina is too easily manipulated. The fact she would even consider reaping people before their time seems an awful lot like murder to me, so she’s a bit tough to root for.

A little more about the premise. Christina is a Reaper, but she doesn’t like the feeling of reaping souls. She ends up bringing someone back to life instead of reaping her soul like she was supposed to; she does this because the girl looks like her dead best friend. She tries to hide it and lie to the Reaper Council; well, that doesn’t go over too well, she ends up in trouble with the Council. In order to appease the Council, Christina needs to use her magical power to find things to find some magical crystal and 3 other magical artifacts, or her family will be blacklisted in the Reaper community. The whole Reaper community seem like major jerks; including Christina’s parents, so if I was Christina, I would’ve said sayonara. What’s more important? Your jerk parents being blacklisted by the other jerk Reapers, or helping evil people find a crystal that can destroy Earth? Apparently, that’s a hard question to answer for Christina.

Overall, there’s some really interesting elements to this story; a little slow at times, but I feel like this story could go in some really cool ways in the rest of the series. I have the audio box set for this series; narrator does a good job by the way, and she has a nice tone to her voice, so I will keep going with the series. I just hope Christina stops being such an easy target.

Meet Christina. She’s 19 years old, a Reaper and coming up on her 20th birthday when she will be expected to become a full-fledged Reaper and be able to take on her tasks of reaping souls without the help of her parents. The thing is Christina struggles with her powers. She has for years ever since a tragic accident. Her parents are pushing her to “stop messing around” but they don’t know or understand the truth about Christina. Her powers are different and because of this difference, it is about to get Christina and her family in a whole heap of trouble and Christina on a dangerous quest.
Reaper of Earth by Jen L. Grey is an engaging paranormal/fantasy novel. The story flows smoothly and is engaging from beginning to end. I like that Christina’s abilities are so different. The author does a good job communicating to the reader how difficult things are for Christina. She struggles a lot with her past and the tragedy that happened to her. There are moments that I feel bad for her because of how cold her parents are. They see her mostly as a means to an end…as long as she acts right; does as she’s told then they can keep everything that they have. But with this one act that she commits…she jeopardizes everything.
I enjoyed this book, but I do have a couple complaints about it. The author touches so many times on this tragedy that so deeply impacted Christina’s life but never tells the reader exactly what happened. I’m disappointed in this because it seems to be a huge part of the story that is missing because so many characters refer to it so often. I also find Christina’s attitude a bit childish at times. She acts more like a 16-year-old than a more mature 19-year-old. I didn’t like that she is so focused on pleasing her parents. Since she failed to be a flawless Reaper for years her parents have never approved of her. I wanted her to stop seeking their approval.
At the end of the day, I really did enjoy this book. The story is well-paced, full of interesting characters, engaging situations, and a bit of a cliffhanger. I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I’m looking forward to the evolution of these characters in the books to come. If you are a fan of Jen L. Grey then I recommend that you pick up this book.

Christina was born a Reaper, a calling she has struggled with her entire life since her natural gift is to restore life not take it. When she is given her final training task to reaper a soul by herself, she fails. To make up for her mistake, Christina needs to go on a mission she isn't prepared for with consequences she can't even anticipate.

I was a little confused about the main character being twenty, I assumed this was an adult urban fantasy story, but it read like a YA and the main character seemed like a younger teen. The character lives with her parents, who are very involved in every aspect of her life, she is missing her best friend and smuggles people including a cute boy into her room to hide, and basically struggling with growing up and accepting her future like most teens. I think I would have liked this a little better if it was a YA paranormal and the main character was like the 16 year old she acted like.

The story had a lot going on in it, be it all kinds of supernatural like Reapers who take souls due to die, demons who make deals, witches who eat children, just to name a few. There was a large cast of unique, interesting characters that helped the main character develop more personality with each interaction since she was fairly bland left on her own. There was so much crammed into the pages, making it non-stop action as well as all the angst and drama you can imagine. I was not sure who to root for in the story or who the main character should trust so every encounter was fraught with suspicion and turmoil. The story was something I read in one day and the ending of this book caused more mysteries than it answered to be prepared to need the next installment.

*I have received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

What a great start to a new series! There is so much twists and turns. Every single sentence felt like there was a new twist to the plot, and there was so many indeed. First off, the take on reapers is entirely unique. I like how reapers are the center of attention. They are super cool and people to fear. However, the reapers in this novel are also ones who are entirely realistic. I liked how reapers were fun supernatural beings and the whole interaction with the souls.

Second off, the heroine was super fun and spunky. I loved how she is an everyday teenager in many aspects, yet has this super cool supernatural side to her. Christina was super relatable, yet her extraordinary abilities made her super special. I liked how she fought to stay true to herself and defied her parents, yet she still loved them. Christina really had a hilarious internal monologue that added bits of humor to the story.

Lastly, I really liked the writing and pacing of the novel. There is so much action happening through the pages. I loved how there is little to no romance. Instead, the entire novel is character driven and the world comes second. In addition, the fight scenes were super awesome.

The only slight criticism to the novel I have is how the ending was a wee bit abrupt. I wish that the entire climax didn't suddenly raise and boom ended. I felt that the last 80% was somewhat choppy and prevented me from enjoying the entire flow of the novel.

Otherwise, I highly recommend this Urban Fantasy novel. Go one-click it and get your daily dose of reapers and the supernatural world.

This book is seriously one of the best books I’ve read this year. I devoured it in one sitting and will now have to wait patiently for the next book in the series (don’t know if I can actually wait patiently though). Christina is part of a family of reapers who have a long and glorious history, making them perceived as better than others, a sentiment her parents share. As a child, Christina displays a power that reapers don’t usually have, and she’s forced to hide it from everyone at her parent’s demand. When Christina is tapped to reap her first soul on her own, it doesn’t work out according to plan. When the Council (Reaper governing body) gets involved, her life goes from bad to worse.
The story is so beautifully written that you can’t help but hate her parents and the Council. You’re rooting for this young woman who seemingly has no allies or protectors. When someone does step forward, you’re shocked because of their shared history.
These characters seem real, both Christine and Charlie are strong and well thought out. The plot moves you along effortlessly and you find yourself stunned to realize you’ve just read the entire thing at once. It completely engrosses and envelops you so that you feel like you’re watching this unfold from the shadows (well, at least I did). If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would.
I’ve decided that I’m too impatient and need book 2 now please!!

When you're a Reaper of souls, but you can't make your powers behave... What's a girl to do? Welcome to Christina's world in Jen Gray's Reaper of Earth, book 1 in the Artifact Reaper Saga.

On the cusp of turning 20, Christina needs to prove that she's capable of Reaping souls on her own. It should be easy, given that she's from a long, powerful line of Reapers. Except... Her powers don't behave the way they should, and now, it's more than her own future on the line.

If she fails, she and her parents will be stripped of all their wealth, power, and standing.

And her parents remind her of this. Constantly.

The Reaper council offers Christina an alternative - find a powerful artifact and all well be forgiven. Of course, the rules keep changing, her power is blocked, and everyone seems to want a piece of the artifact. And when she learns what the artifact can do, she'll have to weigh her family's lives against the fate of the multiverse.

This is the first book in a YA Urban Fantasy series, told in 1st person present POV. Magic and action abound, and the protagonist has a bit of a foul mouth. I give it high marks for a fast-paced plot and a well-defined fantasy world. Four stars.

Reaper of Earth is an intriguing start to a new series by Jen L. Grey. Christina, a reaper, has always struggled with her reaper powers, but now that she is almost 20, she has to prove she can work alone. She also has rare powers that her family has tried years to suppress, and these set her up for a journey she might not be able to refuse.

I really enjoyed reading this first of a new series. Grey sets up a quite interesting scenario involving reapers and other supernatural beings. Christina is definitely a character one can identify with. And it definitely leaves you wondering who is on what side, who stands with the hero, who is playing games, and what everyone's motives are. I also liked that it was a little darker at times than her Pearson Prophecy series.

I do wish, however, that Christina's parents were a little more rounded as characters and also that some of the action scenes were a little more detailed and longer. But overall, I really look forward to the continuation of the series and to finding out everyone's endgame.

What a fun start to a new series!

Reaper of Earth is fast-paced and highly entertaining. It has everything you need in a paranormal novel: a relatable protagonist, good and evil - and those caught in between - and a quest worth fighting for. If you need a quick read as exciting as any TV show, then this is the book for you.

I really liked Christina, aka Chris, the 19 years old Reaper-in-training. On her 20th birthday, she'll be expected to become a full-fledged Reaper and be able to take on her tasks of reaping souls without the help of her parents. The only problem is, she seems to have an affinity for doing just the opposite: bringing people back to life. Which is not what any proper Reaper should be doing, especially not if she wants her parents to have any chance to ever be Elders. As a character, she's very relatable, and her struggles are ones we're keen on following.

The plot was really fun and interesting, though short! I felt like it cut off right when things were really going to get started. I'm looking forward to reading what happens next!

What an absorbing, crafty, and sassy start to this series. I loved getting caught up in the story and trying to puzzle things out only for the author to completely steer the story in another direction and leave me guessing again. The writing was well-developed and having read Grey's previous books, I feel this is her best one yet. Her writing flows smoothly balancing details and action as well as feels more personal. I connected and engaged with her characters but did struggle with Christina at first. While she was initially a little irritating and distant, I came to appreciate her attitude and the way she chose to react to challenges. The darker elements were a refreshing addition, as were some of the supporting and varied paranormals (don't want to give anything away). If you are looking for a new series or love paranormal fantasy, I'd definitely recommend giving this a try.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I’ve become a fan. Chris comes from a family of reapers, so she is expected to carry on with the family tradition. However, her powers are different, and she doesn’t know why. When she is given her first assignment, it goes awry, and she has to find a way to save herself and her family name. I really enjoyed this book, but I didn’t like Chris’ family. I probably wasn’t meant to! I liked the unique universe, and I can’t wait to read the next one. My only real complaints (minor ones) were I would have liked a little more action in the action scenes, I’d like Brad to be a little more fleshed out, and I’d like Chris to be a little less naïve when she’s making those deals! LOL! I look forward to reading the next one to find out what is going to happen. Recommend!

This is a fast paced amazing start to a new series it has reapers, witches and demons OMG. I am so in love with the new series and the author is an amazing writer and I now one of my favorite authors. She makes the story come alive for me instead of making it feel like I am just sitting here reading a story I feel like I am in the story doing everything they are doing. Not many authors can do this for me and Jen L Grey nailed it on this story for me and I am so glad I loved this story. I can not wait to read the second book to this series. I highly recommend this story to everyone who wants an amazing story and an amazing author to read. If you buy this story you will definately not be disappointed at all. This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story.

It took a alittle while to used to Christina's inner monlogue since it is filled with some immaturity and negativity. However, I guess if I grew up with parents who only care about their reputation and continually tell me I was a failure then I would probably be pretty negative. The story line is interesting and the story begins to pick up after a while that keeps you glued to the story as Christina navigates her issues of trying to please her parents as well as save their reputation and possibly their lives, she's still blaming herself for her best friend's death and suffering that missing friendship in her life, she's not a normal reaper but has a different ability that sends her into this journey of events. By the end of the book I eager to jump into the next one.

Really entertaining! This poor girl has had a tough time accomplishing basic reaper skills and her parents treat her terribly!! They are selfish and emotionally abusive. Our reaper is missing her bestie whom she watched die. With demands made from her council and a witch and a demon thrown into the mix, it is no wonder that uncertainty reigns paramount next to feelings of self loathing in her mind. What's a reaper to do when her powers are wonky? With everyone in her sphere demanding her abilities she'll have to rely upon help from unexpected sources. Jen L. Grey has created a very interesting twist on the reaper theme!

What a great beginning to this series! I don't know if there is a genre or troupe that Jen L. Grey can't do effortlessly. I love the fact that it's different from her other works. It shows us that she's both talented and diverse. I honestly didn't know what to expect when diving into this book, but the outcome was pleasantly surprising. Christina, the main character, is painted in a light that makes the reader relate to her easily. She's human, or as human as you can be being a reaper. She's makes mistakes, she gets hurt, she feels, all while still being pretty bad ass. I can't stress how important this is in a main character. I really look forward to seeing where this goes next.

Reaper of the Earth is a young adult coming of age story. Christina is about to become a full fledged reaper, complete with her own targets and hopefully moving out of her parents house sometime soon. The only problem is Christina hates reaping targets. What kind of reaper hates what they are? It gets better when we find out that not only does she hate reaping targets, she also can't do it the traditional way. This sets her 'perfectly perfect' 'everything is about appearances' parents off. To add to this, her best friend died two years ago. It was an accident... right? Guess I'll have to read the next book to find out.

When 19 year old Reaper Christina hits 20 she comes into her full Reaper powers and will be able to reap souls with out help. But she is unique in that her powers seem to bring people back, she mustn't tell anyone that, because a reapers job is to take. Because of an accident her powers haven't been cooperating very well and she has to figure out why before she is the one reaped. I don't really like her parents much because they tell her she just needs to quit thinking about the past and get to it. This book is very fast paced and very well written. I loved the plot and characters I really cant wait to see wha Jen has up her sleeve for book 2

ok

This book sounded interesting so I thought I would give it a try. Christina and her friends sounded very much like teenagers. Just reading this book sounded a bit childish. Christina had a friend die and she’s instead of moving on living in the past. Her whole family are reapers but yet she can’t seem to read souls like the rest of her family. Her parents treat her like crap and they only act like loving parents when there is someone else around. Since Christina can’t seem to reap souls they don’t really want to have anything to do with her. I don’t believe I will be reading the next book in the series.

This book starts out good but ends with greatness. A reapers whose natural instinct is NOT to reap but to heal. I feel so bad for Christina. Life has not been kind to her lately. Her best friend died and she feels like she's to blame. Her parents totally suck and are so self absorbed. The council has Christina between a rock and a hard place and are using her to do their bidding. A demon and a witch who are willing to help but for a price. And let's not forget a possible budding romance! I can not wait for the next installment!!!!

I liked the different take on the reaper story. Christina is trying to figure out why she is different from other reapers. We learn a little in this story. Characters are introduced that I think will be closer to her in the second book. Becca I think will be close to her. Brad, Charlie, and Damien are three interests but I'm not completely sure on who is bad or good for her. Each are different personalities. Action is well paced. A lot of unanswered questions at the end of the first book. Looking forward to the next one.

I'm a huge fan of Jen's and this book is on point! I loved the darker side of the book and the entire idea of reapers! I loved the way things unfold from page to page. I'm always looking for that strong female character and Christina is on point! I loved the action and danger that lurks. Freaking awesome read! I can't wait for book 2!!!!

Loved it! Unique, fun and fast paced adventure awaits within the pages. I get pulled in each time I read Jen's books! They just flow seamlessly and the writers drag you into the pages and storyline. Another awesome book!
