Despite my claims that I'm fully human, there are others who believe otherwise. Not only do they want to prove I have special powers, they want to use my powers for their own ends. No dice. I'm no one's guinea pig. Not only do Nic, Kisho and I have to trail all over Europe, trying to escape old enemies and battle new ones, but I have to deal with a reduced wardrobe, bad coffee and Nic's emotional turmoil. Things are going to get real ugly. Enjoy the final three books in the Clem Demon Fighter series in one awesome volume. Page turning urban fantasy adventures starring a butt kicking demon fighter, pretty boy vampires, and a whole lot of cake. This box set #4 Undead Alchemist #5 Mystery Widow #6 Super Starr
I’m a digital nomad (well I was until 2020 happened), although I hate that term because it makes me sound like a wanky hipster. Which I’m not. Okay, I am a bit snobby about coffee and I sometimes wear twee vintage dresses but that doesn’t make me a hipster.
On my travels, I love visiting weird and macabre places. Mummified hands that remove curses, museums of infectious diseases, collections of taxidermized frogs riding Penny Farthings - hell yeah!
Oh, and that profile photo isn't me, it's my rapscallion Bishon Frise called Hamish. Both of us highly motivated by treats.
This is the second omnibus and it contains books four, five and six. Undead Alchemist (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #4) available for purchase on Amazon I will start by saying that this was one of the funniest books in the series, which is good because the events were quite dire on personal level for Clem, Kisho and Nic. This was also my favourite book in the series. The whole book plays out in Prague because Clem was taken into custody by the Council, and forced to conduct an investigation for them. Besides our three heroes, the Mayor is there as well, what a surprise. The Mayor somehow finds a way to involve his greedy self in every piece of proverbial pie there is. Sometimes he is helpful, if it suits his purposes, and sometimes he is blatantly working against them. Although there is an unforeseen, very funny development regarding the Mayor. Very funny and unexpected. Clem is fabulous as ever, although we get to see the more vulnerable, not yet uncovered side of her. And there are some even more unexpected developments in her regard. Apparently the Council knows more about Clem than anyone else. Oh, and Council is insidious. Regardless, Clem does not back off and she always finds a solution. And there is cake, of course. Kisho and Nic are their wonderful selves. It was really great to have a book with just the three of them and with all of their interactions. And fights about cake, of course. There are some very interesting characters in this book, especially the Alchemist and some of the Council leaders. But what I liked most of all were the descriptions of the city, places they visited, tours they followed, food they ate. I know that the author spent some significant time in Prague doing the research for the book, and it shows. It is demonstrated in every single description, as she conveys the atmosphere of the winter in Prague, tourists and the attractions they visit, as well as slightly less popular locations. There are detailed descriptions of cakes, of course. Mystery Widow (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #5) available for pre-order on Amazon This was a difficult book for me. Don't get me wrong, I devoured it in one breath without a break. One of the books I read the fastest, I was so interested to see what was going to happen. What I mean is that this was an emotionally very difficult book. And this is a very difficult review to write. Let me start by saying that this book is uncharacteristically full of loss and disappointment. And so many changes. Changes in the characters, changes in relationship, changes in the tone. This book has a definitely more serious and somewhat sad tone. Perhaps even desperate. Whatever I said before about the author and her writing stays, nothing has changed there. The only thing that changed is the circumstances the characters find themselves in. And those were pretty dire. I forgot to mention before, the events of the previous book occur in Prague and the events in this book occur in a small village in Switzerland. Clem, Nic and Kisho are on the move, searching for answers about Clem's origins. The answers as important as they are, are not the focus here, but the relationships and the three characters. Nic is not himself, Kisho is different, and Clem is even more different. It took some shocking discoveries to bring the real Clem Starr back. I was not prepared for my favourite kick-ass fortress of confidence heroine to change into a weaker, quite insecure, question-herself-and-her-closest-friends, desperate-for-attention child. Again, don't get me wrong, this was not out of place, it was perfectly in sync with the events and circumstances, but it was difficult for me and it made me sad. In addition, the relationship between her and Nic and Kisho was a bit strained, the relationship between Nic and Kisho was a bit strained, and most importantly, the relationship between Clem and Kisho was a bit strained. There was an incredible amount of insecurities all over the three characters and their relationships. All in all, this was my least favourite book in the series, but necessary for the character development and the world building. Every good series has a book that tackles less pleasant sides of the characters in order to develop them better. I loved the book anyway and I love the series, but now more than ever, I can honestly say that I can't wait for the next book because I want the old Clem Starr back. Super Starr (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #6) available for purchase on Amazon I have been a fan of this series from the very beginning and I have devoured every single book the moment it became available. Clem Starr, Nic and Kisho are all fantastic lovable characters who I was very sad to say goodbye to. However, the author really did a great job finishing the series, tying up all the loose ends and giving full closure. Unlike the last book, which was quite sad, this one starts and finishes on a lighter tone, regardless of the surprises for readers and disappointments for the characters that occur in the story. The author did a great job of maintaining the consistency in characters and the world she has created, as well as the quality of her writing. Again, the amount of research on location she conducted shows and adds greatly to the story. The author conveys the atmosphere of the place and creates the right atmosphere. Make no mistake, there is a lot of cake in this story, probably more than ever before. All in all, this is one of my favourite series and I highly recommend it. The reading order is of utmost importance, and here it is: Sex Demon (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #0.5), which is the same as Incubus (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #0.6), Demon Child (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #1), Moonlight Virgin (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #2), Vampire Prince (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #3), Merry Clem-mas (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter 3.5), Undead Alchemist (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #4), Mystery Widow (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #5), and Super Starr (Clem Starr: Demon Fighter #6)
