Grim is the sovereign shield for Slice, one of the three brothers who rule the three legions. Smoke, the oldest brother, runs one legion. Slice runs another. He is a nasty piece of work and enjoys making Grim's life unlivable. Slice is making his plans for the ceremony that will kill them all. The third brother, Chem, believes in tradition (as he sees it). He's planning on going to his death in the ceremony. The shields are all looking forward to dying. They've all had to do terrible things on the orders of the brothers and they can't take any more.
This book is even better than the first. It's more emotional and has greater depth. The characters are compelling and complex. I really hope there's a third book. The author's website doesn't mention one, but here's hoping.

This book weaves a better story than the first. It's more emotional and has greater depth. The characters are more fleshed out with both colorful and complex lives. Here's hoping for a third book.
