On the afternoon of May 11, 1996, ValuJet 592 plunged into the Florida Everglades. There were no survivors. But something came through the crash unscathed: a small box with huge implications for humankind. And the one man unlucky enough to discover its whereabouts disappeared without a trace.
Now, 20 years later, the mystery of Flight 592 hits close to home for Del Honeycutt and bestselling mystery author Sabrina Spencer. A shocking revelation launches them into the middle of a dark conspiracy, and locating the box becomes a matter of life or death. They are not alone in the hunt for the mysterious parcel and very quickly learn that others will stop at nothing to find it and will eliminate anyone who stands in their way.
With killers hot on their trail, Del and Sabrina must navigate dangers lurking both above and below the swamp waters of the Everglades in order to find the box … and to survive.

SECRETS & LIES (“Lies” Mystery Thriller Series Book #4) by Andrew Cunningham is another entertaining mystery/thriller addition to the series. This is the fourth book in the series and the first of the books I have listened to in audiobook format. The mystery plot is a standalone, but I believe you will enjoy these books more by reading them in order.
This book starts with a BANG, literally. Seymour shoots intruders that are sneaking into his apartment.
The story then goes back twenty years in time to when Seymour was called Jack and an airboat driver for a tourist company in the Florida Everglades. Jack/Seymour was enjoying some solitude when ValuJet 592 plunged into the Everglades killing all on board and changing his life forever.
Back to present day and Del Honeycutt, best-selling mystery author Sabrina Spencer and Del’s other tenant Mo, are all shocked to learn the truth about Jack/Seymour, Mo and how his past is coming back to haunt him.
The four friends return to the Everglades together to find a box Jack/Seymour buried twenty years ago and in the process they are on the run from rogue government agents, mobsters, a crooked billionaire and alligators. Are samples from the fabled “Fountain of Youth” really in that long-buried box and will the friends be able to live long enough to find out?
This is such a fun mystery/thriller. The four main characters are unique and entertaining in their own way quirky ways. All the characters, good and bad were able to take the story from fun, dry humor to serious in a heartbeat. To find out Jack/Seymour’s secrets really changed my perception of him from previous books. The mystery plot is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing.
This fourth book, same as the previous book in the series are fun, entertaining reads. Mr. Hernandez does a great job of narrating this book. Because I read the first books, some of the character narration does not match how I envisioned some of the characters to sound in speech. It did not detract from my enjoyment of the audible book though.
I recommend this unique series of books and characters, but as stated previously, I do believe they should be read or listened to in order.
Everything I wanted to see from the series. Some awesome plot twists, an adventure that Del and Sabrina's worthy and characters that are yet still growing. There was just one segment of the story that I thought was sloppy. No spoilers there but if you're pretending to lose people by flying in seemingly random directions, might as well seal it by then renting a car instead of using a credit card predictably... Just sayin' #Shrug Anyway, that's a detail and I get the intention behind this portion. Awesome novel regardless!
I listened to this story with a sense of glee at being reunited with Del and Sabrina again. It was like meeting up with old friends ... but by the end I was happy to be the listener, and very glad not be to shot at!
Secrets and Lies is Seymour's story. Until now, he's been the grump in the downstairs apartment with a close bond only with Mo, a fact which bemuses and baffles Del as he's never even see the two of them together.
Well, now the reason for that bond is revealed, as is Seymour's true identity. Believe me when I say he's one dark horse, and very handy with a shotgun. When two guys come to the apartment intent on killing him, it is Seymour who is victorious. His handiwork leaves the two men dead, and Seymour's secret past can stay hidden no more.
Without giving away the plot, the four residents head for Florida's Everglades, where twenty years earlier "Seymour" was in the wrong place at the wrong time when a plane crash left no human survivors. But, a box on that flight was recovered ...and hidden. Now, "Seymour" wants to collect the box before more loons connected to those who came to kill him at the apartment get their hands on it.
This is a fast-paced story, with so many secrets and lies (great title, eh?) coming out of the woodwork, all leading back to "Seymour's" old life. The revelations come in droves - his past life was certainly way more colourful than the life he's been leading since. There's little - if anything - to compare selling things on eBay to the race for the mystery box and its contents.
This seemed to be a fitting story to connect the stories of each of the four characters; they've all had major story-lines, and their relationships have grown stronger. It's true, Del and Sabrina have a knack for being dragged into a drama; trouble seems to seek them out. But, the story - in fact, the whole series - is not just about solving a mystery. It's about people: Del's self-deprecating humour made him seem more vulnerable at times, and he found his strength through others. Sabrina, as an author, found fans everywhere - and I mean everywhere, and her ability to write best-selling mysteries allowed her to read between the lines and see clues that the others took for granted. Mo's story is developed here, and despite everything that happens, she just wants to be a school teacher. As for "Seymour", this story reveals a totally different character - a strong man, just and fair, and with a great sense of humour. Who knew?
As always, the narrator brings this all to life, keeps the pace up, lets the listener share in the humour and keeps the flow easy to follow. Once you start listening, then you'll be hooked.
*** Update *** apparently there's a fifth book; available on Kindle or in paperback. It'll be interesting to see if real reading (and not listening to Greg's narration) will be as satisfying. I'm pretty sure it will be.
This read hits the ground running and never lets up!
Downstairs neighbor, Seymour, has always been the crotchety older guy who kept to himself while running his online eBay business. After he kills one of two intruders sent to murder him, Seymour shares a story with Del, Sabrina, and Mo that takes him back twenty years to a different life when murder was also committed, but not by him. Del Honeycutt and Sabrina Spencer commit to helping him find out who wants him dead and why.
Secrets & Lies has it all—a great plot, surprising twists, suspense, and even an anonymous government agency led by a man with questionable allegiances, but what I enjoyed most is the characters. The four well-defined leads of the story couldn’t be more different, but they blend well together. Del’s self-deprecating humor—and Seymour’s one-liners—provide comic relief. Mo’s martial arts moves bring more moments to stand up and cheer, and Sabrina can smooze anyone. Kudos to the author for delivering female characters who are strong, confident women able to handle themselves without being sassy or feisty.
The amazing narration of the book keeps the story moving forward with edge-of-the-seat suspense. I also like how the narrator doesn’t mimic female voices but uses appropriate dialogue tags to indicate who’s speaking. The flow wasn’t interrupted, and I was never “taken out” of the moment.
Set aside some time for this wild ride where the good guys win… if they can stay alive.
One of the fastest action thriller books that I’ve heard/read on recent times.
A box with life-changing secrets was lost when a plane went down in 1996. Now 20 years later, that secret emerged again. And this time Del and girlfriend Sabrina were right in the center of it. A gunshot in the middle of the night generally would do that, you know!!😂 Del and Sabrina then went on to help their friends. My first book by author Andrew Cunningham, I loved the fast pace.
The story had its twists and turns with a massive reveal at the beginning of it. Then on it was a race against time. I couldn’t help but try to scramble fast to keep up with the main characters. Overall a fun read
Was a bit dissatisfied with this audible it was good but to me it was rushed and really badly thought out. As I have said before the audibles keeps you on the edge of your seat this one did not and to be honest it ended to fast. Now the book after this one goes back to a 50's style story telling. The only good thing about this book it let's you know what happens to Del and why in the next book he has issues walking. Sorry to be a downer on this book all the others are excellent
This book gave more background information on Seymour and Mo. Along with the usual twists, action, near death, etc. for Del and Sabrina, this continues with a deeper look at some of the character's backgrounds. This was an interesting book in the series but not one of my favorites. Yet again Del and Sabrina are constantly being tracked down and attempts are made on their lives. I liked finding out more of the back story on Seymour and Mo. One left in the series to read.
You will need to set aside lots of time to read these four books. And, you won't regret a minute of that time.
This was my first time reading anything from Andrew Cunningham, but because of this series I went on to read everything he wrote that I could find in the Kindle store.
He is the consummate storyteller and everything he writes is different. Each of his series explores a totally different time period and plot. I guarantee you will also FALL for Andrew Cunningham!
Secrets and Lies is a delightful addition to the “Lies” mystery thriller series. Full of thrilling exploits, good guys you’ll love and bad guys you’ll despise, the story keeps you riveted from the first page to the last.
This reader loves Andrew Cunningham’s two main characters, Del Honeycutt and Sabrina Spencer, who display immeasurable loyalty to friends and each other, as well as providing some nice romantic moments and multiple examples of the author’s dry wit. But I have to say I’ve always been nearly as fascinated with two of Cunningham’s secondary characters. Seymour—a grumpy, grizzled man who lives in an apartment in Del’s East Boston house—has always provided a comedic relief. In this book, he comes alive when his past is exposed in a shocking rush of events. Molly Peters, who also lives in the apartment building, is a gay second-grade teacher whose martial arts skills are as surprising as her salty language. Mo is another great favorite, and fortunately for us she joins the above three cast members for a wild adventure centered in the Florida Everglades. The descriptions of this watery world are absolutely vivid and will make readers feel as if they are sitting in the airboat with the moist wind rushing through their hair, nervously watching the grassy ‘glades for slithering lumps with yellow eyes.
From the first pages where thugs try to break into Seymour’s apartment to kill him, to the search for a mysterious box missing from an airplane crash twenty years ago, to the wild and heart-pounding chase scenes through the Everglades on a speeding air boat, there is barely a moment to breathe between spinetingling scenes.
As Seymour’s story unfolds, it is soon revealed that the missing box contains samples taken twenty years ago from a “fountain of youth” whose scientific properties were documented and whose location has been closely guarded over the years. The bodies begin to pile up as our foursome narrowly escapes one life-threatening scene after enough. Their goal? Discover if this mythical fountain is indeed genuine and hand it over to a legit scientific group, while meanwhile saving their own lives.
Threatened by multiple villains, including a rogue FBI group, Del, Sabrina, Seymour, and Mo fight to survive in this alligator-ridden, swampy rollercoaster ride. Come join them in an unparalleled adventure sure to please!
A Florida airboat pilot, alligators, lots of bad guys and an unlikely group of friends. These are great ingredients for a mystery. Add to that a comic aged plot with lots of twists and turns. Without giving any spoiler alerts, lets just say, the digital pages were turning rapidly! This is my first Andrew Cunningham book and I’ll be buying another one in a minute.
Enter the Everglades. So calm and peaceful. Even the alligators are a must see for the tourists. Then everything changes. The Everglades we know and love are changed, a plane crashes, its secret cargo changing lives. The characters are so believable that I was drawn into their stories. All human emotions and character traits are here. From the evil, greedy and murderous, to the gentle, terrified yet hopeful. Twenty years after the crash Del and Sabrina are caught up in the mystery of this flight. What is in the box that was on board? Why are people so determined to find it at all costs? What makes it worth killing for, or risking your life for? It appears that this box could hold a secret that could change human lives for the better. If so its potential, not just for human longevity, but for huge financial gains, could be immense. Having met these characters, and enjoyed every second of Andrew Cunningham's enthralling narrative, I now have to read the other books in this series.
This is the fourth and final book of the series. I gave them all five stars. They all had very different and unique storylines. They were all very exciting with many twists and turns. Even though it was a series, all of the books can be read as standalones. I couldn't read fast enough because they were so exciting, but then I was sad that the books ended. This author is very talented. I will continue to follow him for additional books. I am a huge fan.
Although this is the 4th in a series it works great as a stand alone novel. It is a quick very enjoyable read. Cunningham does a terrific job of making the story witty and fun, rather like a summer romp with a serious underside. The four main characters fly back and forth across the country searching answers. There are several surprising twists but it all adds to the story. Oh, did I mention there is an alligator attack too? And something about the Fountain of Youth as well?
A good read. It took a while for me at the first couple of chapters to set all the players. I had to re-read a bit to figure out who and what time period. Once I got that, I was good. SPOILER ALERT: did not know that the daughter was so competent in taking care of herself. That came out of nowhere.
This book has a lot of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge if your seat all the way to the end. Sabrina and Del seem to attract trouble and love each other madly. Jack/Seymour will earn your respect and make you laugh a lot. The characters are all either lovable or hated.
This book grabbed me from the start and didn't let go. The characters seemed real and the setting was magnificent. The plot has plenty of bad guys trying to retrieve a mysterious box from a plane crash in the Everglades. It has murder, mystery , dry humor with a little romance thrown in.
Maybe I just wanted to have more story (another book?) but it seemed all those story lines were tied up too neatly to be real. Not to be a spoi!er, but reconciliation does not happen overnight. That said, there was lots of action and twists and turns to satisfy the reader.
Secrets & Lies is the newest audio addition in Andrew Cunningham’s Lies series, and this one starts out with a bang. Literally, a bang, and Del and Sabrina are pulled into another rollercoaster ride of a mystery, this one hitting a little closer to home. I can always count on Del and Sabrina for an entertaining story, and this one is no different. Much like its predecessors, this fourth book in the series is fast paced and full of danger. And if you’re familiar with this couple, then you already know that danger seems to follow them wherever they go. They also do a fair amount of traveling as they move from one clue to the next, and this one takes them all the way to the Florida Everglades, where bullets aren’t the only danger they need to watch out for. The author gives us some pretty good twists in this one, and it was interesting to me that one big one came very early in the book. That wasn’t a bad thing by any means. Instead, that big twist sets the tone for the whole story, and it’s a whopper. This book is certainly suitably named with the many secrets and lies that are revealed with each new twist. Del isn’t the only one telling us this crazy, twisted tale. We do still get plenty of him and his sometimes self-depricating wit, and his chapters are in first person POV. Then we get another view that is done in third person. Now, normally, that would irritate me, but Andrew Cunningham makes it work for this book and these characters. And it’s all brought to life by the very capable Greg Hernandez. I think I’ve mentioned it before with this series, but it bears repeating; for me, Greg Hernandez feels like the perfect voice for Del, and at this point, that’s exactly what Del sounds like. Hernandez doesn’t give us a big, dramatic performance, but it doesn’t sound like he’s just reading the book either. Instead, it feels like we’re being told the story – by Del during his chapters, and by a very good storyteller in the others. All in all, Secrets & Lies is another entertaing listen in the series. Cunningham give us some great characters and a hard to put down story, and Hernandez brings it all to life for a solid listen. I have to add that Seymour gets plenty of page time in this one, which was much appreciated by this listener. He’s been a favorite of mine since the beginning with his cranky barbs and sharp wit. I did see that there’s a fifth book in the series, and I’m anxious to see if there’s an audio version in the works.
They crept up the stairs. There were three apartments in the three-story building. They wanted the one on the second floor. It was an old building and the stairs creaked a bit. He tried to step on the outside part of the step. They were less likely to creak. But it was the middle of the night and they had seen from the street that the lights were off in all three apartments. Hopefully they were all sound sleepers.
The explosion literally knocked us out of bed. But seconds after the explosion, we found ourselves on the floor, me on my side of the bed and Sabrina on hers. What most likely happened was that we instinctively moved to safety at the thunderous sound. In the couple of years we had been together, Sabrina and I had been shot at so many times, we were probably working on sheer muscle memory. If you hear a loud noise that sounds suspiciously like a gunshot, chances are it is, so you move - fast - even when you're asleep.
Del Honeycutt and bestselling author Sabrina Spencer have just experienced a gunshot that will open their world to more mysteries and secrets they either could have imagined. They will learn the full story behind the grouchy guy living in the building known as Seymour and the beautiful, gay, second-grade teacher known as Mo. That one gunshot will take them through the Everglades as they try to solve the mystery of a plane crash that happened twenty years earlier, along with solving the mystery of what everyone was searching for then and now.
I've read all of the "Lies" Mystery books and they just keep getting better and better. This one really took me by surprise as I learned the secrets and the reasons behind the secrets. So... looking for a real, on the edge book, I recommend, not just book 4 but all of the "Lies" books. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
SECRETS & LIES is the fourth book in the Lies series. Though each mystery will stand on its own, the series is a continuing relationship between Sabrina and Del. I strongly recommend reading the series in the order of release.
It’s a shame that the author didn’t include notes about this being based on fact. ValuJet Flight 592 did crash into the Everglades on May 11, 1996, due to improperly stored cargo starting a fire. All 100 people onboard were lost.
I adored this fast-paced, suspense-filled, edge-of-my-seat, run-full-tilt story that was filled with secrets and lies. The title was a perfect fit!
Add in that they are visiting my home state for most of the book and I was a smiling girl. Alligators and swamp boats!!! I’m on for the ride!!! This was an adventure with critters, bullets, and rednecks.
Trivia: In case you listened (or are planning to) and don't know the difference. An Alligator has a C-shaped nose and a Crocodile has an A-shaped nose. The question is posed in the book, but not answered. So, now you know.
Our four favorite characters, Del, Sabrina, Mo, and Seymour, have each been the focus of a book now. I look forward to where this series may branch out.
Narration: I have grown to love to listen to Greg Hernandez read me a story. I hope he will return for the next in the series and that I will be blessed with a copy.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy via Audiobookworm Promotions, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: SECRETS & LIES Series: Lies #4 Category /Genre: Mystery, Thriller Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Listenability: NSFW Received from: Andrew Cunningham (as an Audible gifted copy)
This is my second book by this author and all I can say is I hope he doesn't plan on giving up writing anytime soon! Sabrina and Del are partners in everything, including her highly acclaimed mysteries. Her initial books were fiction, but since she met Del, they've been living the mysteries that Del now writes the events in chronological order then Sabrina turns them into top selling stories. They own a house on the upper East side of New York City. Sabrina paid for it with funds from a novel. Now she and her two fellow renters live there, plus Del, of course, rent free. Her first floor neighbor is Mo, a second grade school teacher, and Seymore, a very private man who buys things that won't sell online, spiffs them up, writes new copy and sells them at a good profit, lives in the second floor. Somehow their lives intertwine in this novel, making it one you definitely won't want to miss!
Andrew Cunningham has done it again! Secrets & Lies is a tightly woven tale, featuring Del and Sabrina plus letting the other house members to shine, Seymour and Mo. We're taken back 20 years to the Everglades where our intrigue evolves, pop to present, whoa, wait, a bit more history needed twelve years ago, and let's solve this mystery. Entertaining for sure, especially when Del and Sabrina get drawn into this mystery. Oh, while blending the years, we do get teased with a nefarious billionaire, U.S. federales, the Everglades, and for added intrigue, the Fountain of Youth! Mix it all up and the resultant action thriller is another hit by Mr. Cunningham with book #4 in the Lies Series. Get it. Enjoy it. Review it! And thank me!
After reading Book 1, I couldn’t stop continuing reading for three days all the way to Book 4. Not only can I relate to the characters in feeling the same emotions, love, hate and unpredictability, but the compassion towards all kinds of people from any ability/disability to whether they’re poor or rich. I do not judge anyone’s predicament nor discriminate anyone of color. And the stories were super thrilling, super entertaining and built up super suspense. I know a lot of readers will not be able to stop reading, nor set the book down until the Epilogue. Bravo, Encore!!
A decent mystery thriller book. I could do with less of the explanations of previous books, generally not relevant. There is a lot of action throughout and coming from different places and angles. No giant leaps in solutions until almost the end. But ok. I'm also not a fan of the fairy tale wrapups where everyone morphs into a group of happiness, but that's me. Oh yeah, and the billionaire bent on getting whatever he wants ended how? I don't think so. No way. Otherwise, a nice breezy logical thriller read.
It was great to get to explore the deeper relationship between Seymour and Mo in this book. We always knew there was more to them then met the eye but who would have seen this one coming.
Well told story, although the plotline of the search for the fountain of youth seems a little far fetched, it is tastefully done without being condescending to the reader.
Really enjoyed the book and looking forward to reading about Del and Sabrina's next adventure.
This hard to put down book develops passionate relationships cemented through danger and action. Not just passion for another human, but passion for the everglades and passion for life. All highlighted by people who have no passion, only careless disregard for anything but power, control and money. The author weaves his story with detail, character development threaded with a delightful touch of humor.
(Received free for review - audio book/ narrator Greg Hernandaz - not a voice actor, and thankfully doesn't pretend to be; simply reads the book- though the audio book could probably be improved with a different narrator or dual narration)
While this is a stand-alone (gritty, adult) contemporary story, the first books in the series should be read to understand the main characters better. Once again (creeping close to middle age, middle management average guy and reluctant hero) Del and (former prisoner turned author) Sabrina are thrown into a life and death mystery. This time involving Del's Boston neighbour Seymour, revelling Seymour's former name and life in Florida.
This book keeps the story of Del ( yes I remembered his name) and Sabrina going strong. It was engaging and kept me interested from begging to end. The twist with Seymour was a pleasant surprise and while an often used plot it had a fresh turn to it. I have read the other books in the series and highly recommend them. Ready to download the next installment Blood Lies. Thanks for the introduction to Del,Sabrina, Mo and Jack and the Lies they tell.
