Book 5 of 6 in the Baker Street Mysteries- well reviewed for being clean, funny, sweet mysteries.
Georgie Tanner and her best friend, Kari have known each other their whole lives. Georgie was maid of honor at Kari and Joe's wedding, so when Joe is accused of a horrific murder, Georgie is determined to learn the truth.
The details look bad- a body was found in the subdivision under construction where Joe is the general contractor. The body has Joe's favorite knife sticking out of it. To make things worse, the dead man is Devon Walters, Joe's professional rival.
Joe doesn't have a good alibi, and the DA quickly discovers that Devon was about to file a lawsuit against Joe. As Georgie finds out when she digs deeper, Devon had a good reason to file a lawsuit. Despite Joe's underhanded dealings, Kari begs Georgie to prove he didn't do it... but the more Georgie digs, the worse things look.
Worse, Georgie unearths clues that seem to tie back to her fiancé, who died years ago... this may be one case where the truth is too hard to face.
Georgie's best friend, Kari's husband Joe has been arrested and charged with murder. Kari is completely distraught and pleads with Georgie to find the real killer or at least somehow prove Joe didn't do it.
Frank, Georgie's boyfriend is away, so she is on her own with this investigation, and the deeper she delves into it, the more it looks like Joe may be guilty after all.
Meanwhile, there is a new development in the case surrounding the death of Georgie's late fiance, and she suddenly finds herself with a whole plate full of mysteries.
This is a great read, and I am waiting patiently (sort of) for the next book in this series!
I skimmed this to find out what happened with Georgie's fiance and if her bff Kari's husband was involved in any shady deals. Unfortunately Georgie is left with more questions about what happened with her fiance and some questions may never be answered. The plot wasn't satisfactorily resolved which was a huge disappointment. I didn't care much about Kari or her husband drama. He sounds like bad news whether or not he's a murderer. I don't know how Georgie figured out who the killer was but at least this time she doesn't almost get herself killed. Thank goodness because Frank is away.
I feel bad for giving this three stars, because I usually like CeeCee James's work so much. This book, however, had too many issues. It almost got two stars, but I do love the voice and the characters, and I care what happens to them.
The biggest issue for me is that the story just fizzles out. When the MC figures out who did it, there's no confrontation, no real climax. She just basically says, "Oh, it's this person," and it is that person, and that's that. Then there are a few pages of her explaining what happened to her friend.
Perhaps the author meant for what happens at the very end of the book (a kinda-cliffhanger that I imagine will lead into the next book) to be the actual climax? I don't know, but I do know that the way the mystery itself was handled was disappointing.
I also kept thinking, "Wait, where'd her flu go?" The story opens with the MC having a bad flu (later called a cold in the story, which could just mean the MC herself wasn't sure...). It's so bad that at one point, she sneezes seven times in a row.
Then she's out and going about with no sign the cold/flu illness ever existed. Later that evening she even helps Cecelia with food prep for the B&B guests! That's not exactly sanitary! There's one mention of her illness, but then it's just completely dropped. It makes me wonder why it was ever there to begin with. The whole thing just made the story feel sloppy.
Finally, the editing. If a story is good, I can ignore typos and issues like that. But this story had so many issues that the errors stood out and really became distracting. I can't believe that any editor or proofreader would just flat-out not know how to punctuate dialogue.
Please, Ms. James, if you're using someone to proofread, find someone else! This person isn't doing his/her job. If you're not...please find someone!
I still love this series and will absolutely read the next book. I just hope it doesn't feel as (pardon the pun) half-baked as this one.
Georgie Tanner is recovering from a bout with the flu and her boyfriend, Frank is going to be out of town at a conference. Looking at her paintings on the wall got Georgie to thinking about her former boyfriend, Derek Summers, who had died a few years earlier. Doing a little research, Georgie discovers that the fire marshal at the scene of Derek's death was an imposter, so she contacts the coroner, who agrees to meet with her.
Meanwhile, Georgie gets a call from her best friend, Kari Missler. Kari has passed her realtor test and is now licensed to sell real estate. Her first listings are in a development being built by her husband, Joe. Unfortunately, a dead body was found in one of the houses and Joe's favorite knife is the murder weapon. To make matters worse, the corpse turns out to be Devon Walters, a competitor that Joe had underbid to get the housing project.
Did Joe kill Devon? If not, who did? Can Georgie prove Joe's innocence? Will Georgie finally learn the truth about Derek's death?
CeeCee James does a great job of developing complex story lines while still holding the reader's interest. There are actually several mysteries intertwined in this story, with plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing. This book reads a little slower than previous books in the series, but is still very well done.
Georgie Tanner has a new mystery. Her friend's husband Joe has been arrested for the murder of a fellow contractor. The two men squabbled over bidding on a housing development and Joe's knife is the murder weapon. I've enjoyed this series, but this book was my least favorite so far. Frank is largely missing, so Georgie is reduced to searching on the internet and driving around to solve the mystery. Not to sound bloodthirsty, but she usually stumbles over the body. Here she never even sees it or talks to the potential murderer, so the mystery seems rather removed from the actual story. Anything she found could have (and should have) been found by the police first just in the line of investigation. Georgie usually has a bit of luck or some other coincidence that helps in her investigations, but here it was rather routine. We did get a bit more information about the central mystery of what happened to Georgie's fiance, so that was good. But I would have been happier with this book if we had a bit more Frank and more of the real slapdash Georgie nosing her way into murder investigations.
There's a body in the subdivision where Joe is general contractor . It's maybe not surprising that they're looking no further than Joe for their killer. But Georgie was maid of honour when Joe and Kari - her best friend - got married; and no one's going to get any rest till she's figured out the real truth!
Things start to look worse instead of better, then somehow her dead fiancé seems to have been mixed up in some of what she finds. Is this going to be the undoing of Georgie?
James has pulled some seemingly random threads in this one, but that's where her talent at whodunits shines through. You will love it; I sure did!
I enjoyed this cozy mystery. I voluntarily chose to review this story and I've given it a 4.5*. She has a knack of finding the guilty party. She is asked by her friend to help so she agrees to check it out. Without a lot of thought for her own safety, she jumps into her vehicle, only it won't start. So with a loaner she goes all out looking for this killer. She is kind of perky and leaps a lot before she thinks it through. But I kind of liked her, and her loyalty to her friends. And the story left me with a sort of feel good feeling. I'll be reading more of this author's work.
Murder gets personal for Georgie this time and she is going all out to help solve the case for her best friend's husband, who is the prime suspect. Frank is away so I missed him not helping and supporting Georgie but she did great on her own. Things are also getting hot regarding her read fiance and the possibility he was murdered. I look forward to more and finally getting the answer about Derek.
This series has slowly morphed and in this one (based around a murder due to a property development) you can see it moving much further from the B&B. The husband of Georgie's best friend has been accused of murder, but not everything adds up. But enough adds up that the book has to be ambivalent about what might be a problematic relationship. Short and sweet as per - but clearly this formula seems to be constraining James.
"The details look bad- a body was found in the subdivision under construction where Joe is the general contractor. The body has Joe's favorite knife sticking out of it. To make things worse, the dead man is Devon Walters, Joe's professional rival." When Joe is accused of a horrific murder, Georgie is determined to learn the truth. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Was pretty good. Towards the end one section didn't make much sense. The girls were talking about the police getting a search warrant and a few sentences later they were talking about them being arrested. Don't see how the ending ties to any story line. Would be nice to have a few questions answered before starting any new stories.
Each book has had me wanting to read straight through to the end. Great characters, lively plots, plenty of intrigue and a bit of romance; all contributing to a fun and satisfying read! I just discovered there are a couple more books in this series. Can’t wait to read them next!
When Joe is arrested for the murder of a competitor. Kari, Georgie's best friend begs Georgie to look into it. With the clues Georgie finds, even she starts to doubt Joe's innocence. Also, Oscar O'Neil gets a big surprise. We just have to wait and see if it's a good one or not?
This is a very fun story with developed characters, a strong plot, and a bit of humor also.
Georgie does quite a few not so smart things but I love the other characters and mysteries. I guess Frank was missing from this book to give Georgie the opportunity to grow but all she did was grow careless and reckless (empty construction site, bar, sitting in car outside bar doing internet search, etc.)
This story was a connect the dots mystery. The author left a number of dots for the reader to collect. A BFF's husband is arrest e d for murder, as his knife killed the victim in a house he is building and happens to also be a competitor that was underpaid on this construction project. Enter a host of suspects . Who done it.
My biggest issue with this is ridiculous, and I know it. Georgie days the Museum of the American Revolution opened "a few years ago" and it hasn't even been two yet - I was there. Minor, but it bugged me. Also - you can totally touch the tree. :)
Other than that, just minor proofreading errors and I found the Derrek bits odd. Obviously building to something down the line.
Enjoyable! I liked the plot, and this was an interesting mystery. I also loved that we learned more about her fiance's death and am really intrigued to see where that goes! I was sad that Frank was away for most of this story, but he was adorable at the end!
Another great story. There were more than usual wording issues. The writing flowed very well otherwise. I love Georgie and her outlook on life. I am glad the new book came out. I really hope that the books will come out sooner.
I've enjoyed the entire Baker Street series. I missed the interaction between Georgie and Frank - it's nice to see that relationship evolve. Book 5 in the series was a fun read for a relaxing weekend.
Questa serie è sempre una piacevole lettura, spero solo che prima o poi vengano risolto il giallo della morte del precedente fidanzato della protagonista, me dubito che avverrà presto visto che è la storia che fa da sottofondo a tutta la serie.
Highly enjoyable and hard to figure out. A lot of twists and turns. Georgia didn't really do anything too stupid in this one. The ending is a small cliffhanger.
I fear this is the last of the Baker Street mysteries. I've really enjoyed reading them all but wish there were more! If the author reads this, could she please tell me there will be more? Georgie is one of my favorite protagonists!
This series is very enjoyable. The characters are fun and the plot is interesting. Nice relaxing reading without graphic violence. I will get the next book of there is one.
A quick 90 min read. The reader is hooked on page one and slowly reeled in and left wondering where to next by the last line. Well done Cee Cee James. Loved it.
