Fresh Life Series

Live Fearlessly: A Study in the Book of Joshua (Volume 2)

Rate this book
Do you ever feel like you don’t have what it takes? Like you can’t be as good as those around you? Well, after waiting decades for his time to lead, Joshua had some big shoes to fill. He may have felt slightly intimidated by the task at hand.

Joshua’s predecessor, Moses, had a near spotless résumé: he led the Jews out of Egypt, parted the Red Sea, and even conversed directly with God. Not exactly an easy act to follow. Yet Joshua’s fearless confidence in God proved to be more than enough. God used Joshua in miraculous ways. All his life, the people of Israel followed and trusted Joshua’s lead.

The Fresh Life series was created by women for women, who crave a profound experience of God’s Word without an overwhelming time commitment. In just 20 minutes a day, you will come to a deeper understanding of the truths of the Bible. With a group or by yourself, use this easy-to-use study to develop a fearless, Joshua-like confidence in God so you can accomplish everything He asks you to do.

Wonderful study! The format is perfect for reading, meditating, and praying. It suggests 20 minutes a day, but I'd say each study takes me about 30 minutes. I didn't do it every day, but when I could. Lasted me about 7 months from start to finish. So much wisdom to glean from the book of Joshua, and Lenya and Penny do a great job weaving it all together.

This is a fairly thorough study into Joshua. Relevant history, culture, context, and connections to other Biblical passages, especially those relating to Jesus as Messiah, are prevalent in each of the lessons. There are 7 daily devotions/studies for each week-long lesson, and each week inspects a new story of Joshua’s life by focusing on a few chapters. After reading the passage for the day’s lesson, there are a variety of questions. Some of the questions are factual, to make sure that you actually pay attention to what you are reading and didn’t just skim through without comprehending as I am frequently prone to do, especially when reading first thing in the morning. Next, the questions get a little deeper, encouraging the reader to introspect for a few minutes and see how the lessons from Joshua’s life can apply to our own.

Heitzig and Rose’s voices are combined flawlessly, so it is easy to forget that there is more than one author. There are no problems of lurching between perspectives or jarring transitions between chapters, as is common in books with multiple authors. The format is visually pleasing as well; each daily devotion is approximately four or five pages long, but there are five sections each day. This divides up the text and makes it look less daunting.

Overall, I found this study informative and thought-provoking. I have a better grasp now about the lessons we can learn from the book of Joshua to apply to our everyday lives. The authors also managed to make the boring part (the division of the land) at least somewhat interesting.

This book should not have been marketed just to women; the lessons are applicaple to all. Also, it should not have been marketed as a 20-minute-a-day study; I found the lessons took much longer (I recorded answers and thouhgts in a journal), and I even skipped the recall questions.

On the negative side, I thought the book's dealings with the difficult issues in Joshua, namely the violence against even innocents, were dealt with on too surface of a level at times. In addition, I also disagreed with the authors' assertion that we shouldn't question spiritual leaders (Lesson 7, Day 4), and their application of 1 Peter 3:1-5 to an unrelated topic, as well as this same passage being yanked out of its cultural context. Of course, this passage is almost always yanked out of its cultural context.

On a side note, tractor beams appeared in Star Trek before they appeared in Star Wars (Lesson 8, Day 2), but I digress.

This is doing absolutely nothing for me. I've stuck it out for three weeks and I don't think I learned anything.

I really loved this study. I felt it was a complete study of the whole book and you really got to know what Joshua went through. Loved it!
