Homer (Greek: Όμηρος born c. 8th century BC) was a Greek poet who is credited as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic poems that are foundational works of ancient Greek literature. Homer is considered one of the most revered and influential authors in history.
Homer's Iliad centers on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles during the last year of the Trojan War. The Odyssey chronicles the ten-year journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, back to his home after the fall of Troy. The poems are in Homeric Greek, also known as Epic Greek, a literary language which shows a mixture of features of the Ionic and Aeolic dialects from different centuries; the predominant influence is Eastern Ionic. Most researchers believe that the poems were originally transmitted orally. Despite being predominantly known for its tragic and serious themes, the Homeric poems also contain instances of comedy and laughter.
Homer's epic poems shaped aspects of ancient Greek culture and education, fostering ideals of heroism, glory, and honor. To Plato, Homer was simply the one who "has taught Greece" (τὴν Ἑλλάδα πεπαίδευκεν). In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Virgil refers to Homer as "Poet sovereign", king of all poets; in the preface to his translation of the Iliad, Alexander Pope acknowledges that Homer has always been considered the "greatest of poets". From antiquity to the present day, Homeric epics have inspired many famous works of literature, music, art, and film.
The question of by whom, when, where and under what circumstances the Iliad and Odyssey were composed continues to be debated. Scholars remain divided as to whether the two works are the product of a single author. It is thought that the poems were composed at some point around the late eighth or early seventh century BC. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity; the most widespread account was that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. Modern scholars consider these accounts legendary.

French: Homère, Italian: Omero, Portuguese, Spanish: Homero.

I really enjoyed this. It was definitely something completely different from what I usually read, although I knew what I was getting myself into since the Odyssey is one of those books many people encounter in school. I actually really liked the story, and reading it right after watching the movie made it even more interesting.

What surprised me most was how different the book and the movie are in some parts. I expected them to be more similar, so it was really interesting to see which things were changed or interpreted differently for the film.

That being said, you definitely have to be in the mood for this kind of book. It is not something you can just fly through like a modern novel, and some parts were definitely a little slow for me. But that also comes with the territory and the writing style, so I cannot really hold that against it.

Overall, I really enjoyed finally reading this classic, especially after watching the movie. If you have the time and patience for it, I would definitely recommend giving it a try. A solid book, a solid movie, and honestly a pretty fun little experience.

This review is for Stanley Lombardo's translation of Homer's The Odyssey. As long as this poem is, not every line can be a hoot, but when Lombardo gets going, the exuberance is magnificent. My favorite line for "winged words" is when Calypso is about to give Hermes a piece of her mind: "words flew from her mouth like screaming hawks."

I had to read portions of The Odyssey for a class I'm taking for fun at the local community college; I liked the portions so much I went back and read the whole thing. I'm not sure about Odysseus being a hero, and certainly the topic of whether or not he is one made for a good discussion with the class, but he is a bit too self absorbed and, ultimately, violent for me to consider a real hero. The gem in this story is his wife, Penelope. She keeps the suitors who wish to marry her all the years that Odysseus is gone at bay by being clever, strong, and hopeful. I love her character, and kudos to Homer for recognizing the strength of women at a time when that wasn't necessarily the popular belief. Highly recommend!

I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed reading The Odyssey and how much I loved the story. A very interesting epic of Odysseus trying to reach home after the Trojan War.
