Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
This took me forever to finish, this book and the one before it were just so boring! I hate where it’s going. Again, I hate Tom, he’s so whiny and irritating, bring back Todd. It’s also extremely repetitive and does the same scenes over and over and over with slight variations. It’s hardly different from the book before it. Next.
If you’re getting a little tired of Elizabeth pining away for the first-class jerk who’s been extremely mean ever since he dumped her, Jessica steps up to the plate in Spy Girls to lighten the mood. As we all know, she’s been begging her hottie cop boyfriend Nick to take her along on an undercover assignment, and he finally gets forced into it. There’s been a murder at a country club (only at Sweet Valley!) and Nick gets sent to investigate. He has to pose as a preppy guy with all-access to the couples-only VIP lounge, so his boss insists he take Jessica along as his partner. She gets so excited! But, since she can’t let any of her friends recognize her, she dons a ridiculous Eva Peron getup as a disguise. It’s very funny, as are the antics of Pepper Danforth, Lila, Bruce, and the other silly people at the country club. This is just as fluffy and hilarious as we need at this point in the series.
Elizabeth is in this installment, but she’s not as tearful and heartbroken as she’s been recently. She gets sent to write a fluff piece at the country club, with her new writing partner, Scott Sinclair. He’s cute, but a little too smooth. How do you think she’ll respond to him? Tom is also in this book, fighting off (not too much) the advances of the beautiful seductress, Dana.
The scope of the story really narrows in SVU 34, we get:
-Jessica and Nick infiltrating the Verona Springs Country Club as Perdita the Argentinian and Chip the prep, to investigate the caddy murder. -Elizabeth and Scott Sinclair, at the country club ostensibly to cover the tennis tournament for the society pages of their newspaper, but really to investigate the caddy murder. -Tom is at the country club to moon over Elizabeth and investigate the caddy murder. -Lila and Bruce also spend all their time at the country club, but they don't care who gets murdered.
I don't know where Nina is, or Alex, Isabella makes a fleeting appearance. I have no idea why these people don't have any classes.
Elizabeth and Tom aren't together in this instalment but they sure think about each other a lot and the people they're with at the moment are complete psychos. Tom's gf Dana is a redhead, which tells you all you need to know if you've ever read a Sweet Valley book. Scott is Elizabeth's reporting partner, she's made it quite clear that she is not interested in him but he insists on forcing his kisses on her.
I think the next book is the last in the Verona Springs saga. At least I hope it is. I'd give anything for a bit of sorority drama! A college sports scandal! Anything!
SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY Written by Francine Pascal General Review for series as I cannot remember each novel.
I read Sweet Valley University when I was in junior high school to high school. While there is sexual content it is very mild (not explicit) compared to teen books today. If you like the Sweet Valley High you will love this series as it continues with the twins' story as they attend University and are away from their parents. I am not sure how they would relate to teens today as this was before cell phones were common and social media. They are fun teen romances with "real-life" situation. I did not complete the series as I started to save for school so I wasn't able to collect them any further (they are out of print). I still have the books I bought and may try to read one again (I did reread the series a few times).
