This is one of the grossest misuses of a book reviewer's quote I've seen in a long time.

What the jacket says: "The next book in the series that Kirkus Reviews called 'Harry Potter with a cast of millennials'".

What Kirkus Reviews actually said: "Archer attempts to mix an origin story that will feel familiar to fans of X-Men or Harry Potter with a cast of millennials, but the novel reads like it's written about teens for teens. "

This feels and reads like a typical middle or second book to a series. Nothing really happens; except that our lead gal learns more about her magical powers and time trudges on.

Cliche
I'm not necessarily opposed to cliche moments or writing; after all that is how we got genres. That said there is only so much that I can take and in the introduction to Astral Traveler's Daughter there is an overdose of cliche comments that K.C. Archer has written in. Luckily it gets better.
Again there's nothing special about this series; but it's a decent read. It's neither the best, nor the worst.

Astral Travel
It always amuses me (and slightly frustrates me) when a leading character is given HUGE amounts of warning about something (in this case astral travel) and then immediately goes and does it. Archer has made this silly moment even worse by having the person who is helping our gal get into the astral realm give the speech of warning and then say to her "ready?" Um... why would she say yes now? It's ridiculous and bugs me. At least make the person who gives the warning NOT the same person that leads her into temptation (if you will).

Defense of Friends
There is one theme that is really well done in Astral Traveler's Daughter and that is the immediate instinct we all have to defend both our friends and family. It's as though none of us want to believe that we could be friends or related to someone that is 'evil' or just does awful things. I liked the treatment Archer used to show the disbelief (even in light of a mountain of evidence) that strikes our leading lady. While it (of course) doesn't necessarily add up as expected (because what book with a mystery does); it also doesn't turn entirely innocent either.
It's a good reminder that we must all step back sometimes and consider the facts and evidence of a situation (regardless of whom is the accused) instead of acting on instinct. This goes both ways of course. It's an excellent reminder not be too hasty to condemn (Professor Snape anyone?); but also think before defending too fervently.

Overall
I didn't expect much from this second book and so my expectations were more or less met. I hope that the third book is stronger and can bring in some better plot points. While astral travel is interesting and all it makes many things much too convenient in the end. And I hate convenient only-happened-because-of-magic endings. I also did have the ending pegged somewhat early on (around page 150 of 300); but again wasn't really expecting to be surprised and so the fact that I wasn't isn't a let down so much as a nod at Archer providing us with a solidly written cliche fantasy story.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

Teddy Cannon is now an astral traveler. Out of all the psychics and their psychic powers, I think this one is definitely the coolest (although being able to communicate with animals is still up there for me).

In this installment, Teddy discovers more about her mother and her past. That guy she helped bust out of prison in Book One...Yates...well, he says he's going to help her find answers. Teddy doesn't know if she can trust him, because she does not completely understand what he wants from her. Teddy and her friends are still trying to figure out who the bad guys are. More than anything, they are still trying to figure out what their questions should be.

And she thought she was just enrolling in a law enforcement school for psychics. Little did she know there's a sinister plot to all of this that involves a terrorist group and her biological mother.

This book is jam packed with game changers. The fact that Teddy can change timelines, means that you will not be able to predict this story's ending. From the beginning, Teddy and her friends set out to get answers that may lead to finding their friend Molly. Only to discover they are just movable pieces on a chess board, never knowing who is playing this game or who they are playing against.

A great, high impact read. The ending will leave you very surprised.

I highly recommend the audiobook for both books. The narrator is excellent.

Teddy Cannon is entering her second year at the Whitfield Institute, a school for psychics. The school is training Teddy and the other students to prepare them for government service. In addition to her studies, Teddy is determined to find her missing friend Molly Quinn and learn more about her birth parents.

This is the second book in the "School for Psychics" series. Some background information is given at the beginning of the book as a refresher for returning readers and an introduction for new readers. To get to know Teddy better, readers may want to begin with the first book. Teddy still does things her own way and isn't afraid to take chances for those she cares about. I like that Teddy has matured since the first book, but the overall plot wasn't as interesting to me as the prior book. Things went round in circles a bit with Teddy trying to figure out the "space-time continuum" that made me think of "Back to the Future". The last couple of chapters were exciting but then the book ends with things completely up in the air. I assume things will pick up and hopefully be resolved in the next book.

I would give the book 3.5 stars. Readers who enjoy "The Naturals" series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes will want to give the "School for Psychics" a try.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster and K.C. Archer for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy.

This sequel picks up right where the first book left off. Teddy and her friends are beginning their second year at the Whitfield Institute for psychics. This year they are learning how to use their unique abilities to intuit events from an inanimate object. Teddy was secretly given her mother’s necklace from Yates, whom she doesn’t trust. In Teddy’s private lessons, Clint has been teaching her to astral plane which allows her to leave her body and observe things that have happened in the past. Teddy is still plagued by not knowing whether or not her mother set off a bomb in New York City many years ago. She just can’t believe that her mother was a willing participant in the vigilante group the Patriot Corps. Her best friend Jillian has fallen in love with a cargo-shorts wearing boy who Teddy can’t stand. Jillian has been taking all kinds of risks for her new boyfriend and his animal rights activism. Things have been heating up between Teddy and Pyro and not just because he controls fire! She has been put on special assignment to protect Miles Whitfield, the grandson of Hollis Whitfield. While astral planing she discovers that Whitfield has been developing a drug to control psychics. Is the school just a front? Who, from the school is involved? What move will the Patriot Corps try next? How is this related to her mother and Sector 3? Teddy is hiding way too many secrets from everyone and if she isn’t careful, she will be putting everything on the line to get the answers she needs.

First off, I think that if you haven’t read the first one in this series, you might have a hard time with this one. I read the first one a while ago and even I had a hard time getting into it, because I couldn’t remember all the details from the first book. There are a number of different stories going on this time around, but Archer does a great job of connecting them all together. I never felt lost or overwhelmed. Nick is out of the picture and there is a small romance with Pyro, but I thought that more could have been done with that storyline. Okay, I need the romance. It keeps things spicy! The friend group is really fractured this time, so I didn’t feel the camaraderie the same way as in the first book. That detracted a bit for me. I really like all the psychic stuff and what they were learning in school. Less time could have been spent on their summer and more focus on the school would have made it more interesting for me. I wasn’t ready to give that part up just yet. I really liked the addition of the new character Miles and that storyline. I’m not sure how much character development happened in this book, compared to the first.

I loved the first book. I really liked the second book. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the next one in the series!

I liked this book a lot - more than School for Physics, which was just okay and have to admit I almost didn't get this book. I'm so glad I did and I'm really looking forward to book 3.
The main character Teddy, has an attitude can be abrupt and selfish at times but that's what makes her who she is and what's gotten her into trouble her whole life. She has serious trust issues and integrating with others without those issues has been a challenge, at times for her. It is interesting (and can be irritating) as she tries to figure about the more out her 'illness', that she's had all her life. I also like that she a smart ass. Another reviewer said this was YA, I'm not completely sure what the parameters are for that category. The book has some swear words and a couple of implied sex scenes, nothing offensive IMO.
This is a fun, fast read that is perfect for a weekend or vacation.

Before I started this book I had heard it was being compared to Harry Potter. Yes, there is what feels like magic but is instead students learning how to use all their different psychic powers. This felt more like real life X-Men than Harry Potter.

Students are discovering more uses for their powers and finding out how they could grow them to assist in the future when they worked for the FBI, Secret Service or Police Force.

There is a lot in this beyond the whole “school for psychics” thing. We follow a girl who has a lot of problems but is also quite capable of overcoming what others think isn’t possible for her. A missing girl from a previous book sort of plays into the storyline but I think this is more about how Teddy finds ways to work together with her friends as she expands her astral traveling and other powers, finds her mom, and realizes she can travel back in time and change things.

This would work great as a movie with special effects. I can totally see it on the big screen. Not just for teens. Anyone can enjoy this.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

The Astral Travelers Daughter is the second book in a series, and I should have read the first book. I was lost through some of the story because I didn't know the background. Aside from that, the story was interesting. Teddy is a sophomore at Whitfield academy where she is learning how to control her psychic powers. This training will be used for law enforcement later which I thought was odd. Teddy has a missing mother and friend whom she is searching for. Her mother was possibly involved in crime in the past and this might be affecting Teddy's life now. She is a likeable albeit flawed character. The story moves at a good pace and is well written. The ending leaves room for more. I recommend this book, but read the first book in the series. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I loved to see how far Teddy has come in reference to her trust in relationships and her self growth but she allowed her emotions to cloud her judgement a lot of the time. But that's not to say that the second book wasn't just as good as the first, the ending kinda broke my heart a bit and I'm waiting for the next installment in the series

I quite enjoyed this follow-up to "School for Psychics." The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. However, the reason I did not end up rating this book four or five stars was the innuendo. I, along with plenty of other readers, do not like or want this in a book.

I know a lot of people won't agree with me on that point and think that I am weird, but that's just my personal opinion, and I won't apologize for that.

A very solid second installment in what is turning out to be a consistently smart, enjoyable series.

Though the character development remains one dimensional and the dialogue is often clunky, the plot is sharp, propulsive, and strikes a good balance between action and sleuthing. Despite the psychic elements, the series still feels more like a YA mystery than a YA fantasy, which is a good thing.

My only real gripe with this remains the title of the series. This is a nuanced, complex story with a creative premise... and "School for Psychics" is the best title you could come up with? It just sounds so juvenile and insipid. I imagine it puts off a lot of readers who see that and think this must be a far poorer quality series than it actually is.

Yes, I know, it literally is about a school for psychics. But we don't call Harry Potter the School for Wizards series, do we? I just feel like the dopey series title has cost an excellent story a lot of potential readers. That aside, I greatly look forward to the next installment in the series.

A wonderful followup to the first book. I love these characters and world. Unique and well written. A little rushed at the end but setup book 3 without leaving me completely without some resolution. I think these really need to be read in order or you will be confused.

I really really wanted to love this book as when I heard the premise for the book, it sounded like it was something that I would enjoy. The actual book itself though was somewhat disappointing. This is book 2 in a series and I think part of my problem is that I didn’t read the first one. There was so much that apparently happened in the first book that was mentioned briefly in the second book but there were not a lot of details and I felt as if the author was relying on you to have read that first book in order to fully grasp the concepts in the second book. The premise for both the first and second books is that it covers the adventures of students in a special training program for psychics. These students are in their early 20’s and have special psychic abilities that would supposedly make them a big asset to the law enforcement community. I would have really loved to know how they got selected, what the school was really like, etc. But, the book centered more on what I could only assume is a carryover story from the 1st book in that the main character, Teddy is trying to determine what happened to her mother. In her quest to discover more of her past, she learns to become an astral time traveler and is able to show up in other people’s present day but understands that she can only observe and can’t do anything to change history. This story is going on while she is a student and while she is also trying to discover what a pharmaceutical company is doing partnering with her school. Teddy and her friends apparently don’t abide by any rules and so anything goes in this story. I like the idea of the book and the concept but I think it needed further development. There are so many places this idea could go but I think the characters seem very surface level and the adventures feel a bit flat at times. Overall I did enjoy the story but I felt I was really missing a lot that might have been in the first book.

The Astral Traveler's Daughter (School for Psychics, #2) is the second installment in the School for Psychics series by K.C. Archer. I found the premise in the first book intriguing - a school designed to train psychics to utilize their abilities to serve in law enforcement. Archer's writing style is easy to read and the storyline has a nice pace.

The Astral Traveler's Daughter has psychic Teddy Cannon returning to Whitfield Institute for her second year of training following a summer break where she obsessively searched for information on her mother and her disappeared friend Molly. In her second year, Teddy is learning astral projection in addition to her regular courseload, dealing with friend drama, and trying to find out the truth about her mother's involvement with the psychic terrorist collective Patriot Corps (PC). Derek Yates has also established communication with Teddy and Teddy can't decide how much to trust Yates.

The Astral Traveler's Daughter felt primarily as though it was a set-up for the next installment in the series. While this is a task it accomplishes well and the journey is entertaining, the plot is not quite as tight as the first book in the series. I do look forward to reading book three and finding out where the storyline goes from here. The series is entertaining and I recommend it to fans of paranormal thrillers.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC and the opportunity review The Astral Traveler's Daughter.

*** I received an advanced e-copy of the book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

This is the second book in the Whitfield Institute series, and in this one Teddy learns she has an even more valuable gift.... she can travel in time. There are so many things wrong at the moment. The Patriot Corp is trying to gain access to a drug that suppresses the psychic abilities, and is also recruiting some of the people she cares about into their group. Molly, one of her friends, is missing. Oh, and someone she had thought had been wrongly incarcerated has escaped from prison and keeps contacting her, making her more and more confused about what side he is really working for.
I love this series, and I thought this book was just as good as the first one (School For Psychics). I love the premise.... a school for people with psychic abilities, helping them to channel their abilities into doing good, and working with organizations such as the FBI. Teddy Cannon is such a kick-butt, empowering female lead character, and I love all of the others that she is friends with at the institute as well. If you love fantasy and/or thrillers, you will definitely like this series. I do suggest reading School For Psychics first, just so you can get the full background story on Teddy and get to know all the others better as well.

Teddy Cannon is off to her next adventure in The Astral Traveler's Daughter, second in the School for Psychics series.

I'm not sure what this book is typically marketed as. I'd say it's older YA. I picked up the first at my library last year and liked it enough to take a chance on the second installment. It's a quick read. Pacing is good. I definitely wouldn't compare it to Harry Potter or any other great fantasy series, but I enjoyed it! I'm growing tired of Teddy's romantic ventures and the dialogue around that, but aside from that I think it's lighthearted and fun in comparison to the other things I've been picking up. I like that this doesn't take much effort or energy from me and despite the fact that I read the first book legitimately a year ago and I can barely remember much of what happened, I was able to jump back into this with little scrambling and the author does drop tidbits here and there to jog the reader's memory.

I would recommend this to anyone who can go into it with little expectations and is maybe looking for a light palate cleanser before jumping into something with a bit more substance.

I received a copy of this story from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the first book and was incredibly to excited to read the sequel! While this one was also good, I didn't like it quite as much as the first one. There were times when I was pleasantly surprised by the plot twist and then there were times when I wondered how Teddy and her friends didn't make the connection. I was also annoyed with Teddy's do-I-like-Pyro or do-I-like-this-other-guy back and forth; it disconnected me from the story a bit.

I liked the direction it was going, for the most part. I wish we saw more of Teddy and her friends working together. I felt like Teddy went a bit rogue and I wanted to see all the students working together, growing and honing their powers. It felt like it was missing that camaraderie .

I'd still recommend this book to everyone. It's a solid sequel and I really need the next book to come out. I want to know what happens next!

This was a really good sequel and what appears to be the second in a trilogy, as we ended on quite the cliff-hanger! What I liked was that this "middle" book had a strong plot, more character development and growth and while answering some questions, brought in new and interesting ones for the characters to grapple with in the next (I hope) book. Being a second year student at the school for psychics, all training to work in some type of law enforcement capacity brought new challenges and problems and saw some shifting in relationships. People are not always what they may seem on first impressions and some hard lessons are learned. This would actually be a good stand-alone as long as perhaps a little background were provided to set the scene and that is unusual for a second in series novel. Good writing, actions with consequences, and characters acting like real people (making mistakes) makes for an adventurous read.

In this continuation of «School for Psychics» series, Teddy, Dora, Janine and Pyro go back to Whitfield Institute for their 2nd year. This time, their return is shadowed by the suspicious disappearance of their friend, and betrayal of someone they trusted.

The second year also requires more from Whitfield students. Soon, they will need to be sorted to various military forces or secret agencies, and it's up to them to perform to their highest standards.
Concerned about her friend, her parents, and suspicious activity of Whitfield superiors, Teddy and her crew end up in the middle of the mysterious events that might solve their problem, or make an even bigger mess!

School for Psychics would make an interesting TV show! It has all elements that make TV shows so addicting: school setting, stubborn characters, crime, mystery, and psychics abilities to help them solve old cases.

The sequel to the School for Psychics wasn't quite as good as its predecessor, but it was still a great story, and certainly set the stage for more to come. Teddy's powers continue to grow throughout this book, and she learns more about her powers. At the same time, she struggles to trust those around her as she learns more about her parents' history. She continues to rely on her friends, especially Pyro. Kate also returns, and her and Teddy's love/hate relationship was once again one of the best parts of the book. The difference in this book was that Teddy has earned a certain level of (grudging) respect from her teachers. This time, when she tells them that something is wrong, they act alongside her, rather than second-guessing her.

Although it's not as strong as the first book, this is a really solid sequel, and it kept me excited for more School of Psychics stories to come.

Not a bad second novel.

I think that the biggest thing about this novel that annoyed me was Teddy. I think that Teddy as a character is very flat. She isn't complex or anything like that. She is pretty much plot driven. That annoyed me very much. I wanted more from Teddy than just focusing on finding the answers and following one person.

Towards the end she got better. A little bit more complicated and that made all the difference. The book was easier to read and I was more invested in the plot. By the end of the book, I'm very interested to see where this goes. But also wondering where the author is going to take it from here.

Definitely would be down to read the next one. I just wish Teddy had been more than the plot at the beginning.

Description
Last year, Teddy Cannon discovered she was psychic. This year, her skills will be put to the test as she investigates a secretive case that will take her far from home—and deep into the past in the thrilling follow-up to School for Psychics.

My Review
The setting of this novel - The Astral Traveler's Daughter starts off in San Francisco where Teddy is reading about the recent assassination of a Ukrainian drug lord. Not one who is good at following the rules, Teddy finds herself and those she cares about in danger.

If you enjoyed reading School of Psychic, then you will enjoy reading this book. The only thing I found a bit frustrating was the back and forth. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.

A novel about a young woman learning to use her psychic powers is not my usual read, especially if I missed the first installment. Teddy Cannon, however, is an engaging and dynamic character. The Whitfield Institute, where she is training, is full of potential potholes. Teddy's looking for her mom and her friend Molly, both of whom have disappeared and left her bereft. What's with the Patriot Corps? I liked the aspects of training and the mystery. It's well plotted and written. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is perfect YA crossover reading for fans of Harry Potter and (dare I say it) the X-Men.

Teddy Cannon, The Astral Traveler’s Daughter (hard from Simon and Schuster) is in the second year of the federal criminology School for Psychics (paper) still wondering if her birth mother was a terrorist in the Patriot corps. As she learns new techniques, like astral projection and psychometry, she also investigates a new drug that Hyle Pharmaceuticals to remove psychic abilities, she is also assigned to protect the Hyle family at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s a fun tale, but I wasn’t happy with the ending of this episode in the series. Since at least two more books are coming, I’m giving the author a pass. Review printed by Philadelphia Free Press

This is the second book in the School for Psychics series. I wish it came in audiobook! I think hearing the voices would make it even more interesting.

It had been awhile since I read the first book but I caught up to speed pretty quickly, so the author did a good job on that. I continue to like watching the relationship between Teddy and Pyro, and also her bodyguard assignment for Miles, whose grandfather is bad news. Finally, I'm wondering what's going on with her parents. They clearly aren't dead, so what's up with that? I hope to find out in the next book because the cliffhanger ending on this one is killer!
