Excellent book and can't wait to implement its ideas! Perfect for parents to deepen their relationships with their kids (and really anyone who wants to deepen relationships with a spouse, friend, relative, etc.). If I could gift this to every family I know, I would! The idea is simple (but effective, and was relatable as an entrepenuer): Every 90 days, schedule a "family board meeting" or "date day" with each of your children, individually. Spend 4 hours of uninterrupted, no-electronics time with them, doing an activity of their choosing and sharing a meal together. End the time by creating a space for open and vulnerable conversations. Can't wait to do this with my baby girl and to start doing it with my spouse too. Highly recommend!
I heard of this book during a podcast interview. I was intrigued. So I've heard it said you cannot create quality time with your kids, the only thing you can give them is quantity and at some point in there quality time will be created. This book suggests that no, you can intentionally create quality time with your kids through a process they refer to as "family board meetings". What is the bottom line? Spend time with your kids. The part that is a bit different is the recommendation of quarterly spend 4 hours one-on-one with your children. Will it work? I don't know but I'm going to give it a try and see. Do I recommend the book? I don't know yet, it's short and I read it in the spaces of time when I wasn't busy and it only took 6 days. So, why not?
I’m really not a fan of self help books. However I was gifted this and for the first time learned something from a “self help” book. The book actually gives you a plan and advice to implement which I find so rare in these books. That being said, I could do without the multiple stories and reiterations of the same paragraph throughout the book. I’m much more analytical and prefer the process/plans with a few examples or ideas, not a whole book.
I am looking forward to putting the simple concepts of this book into life as we start to implement one on one quality time dates with our children. The ultimate goal is to create more meaningful relationships with those I love the most. Stay tuned for a more detailed review once we have a year of these under our belt.
I highly recommend this book for every parent of a child at any age. I plan to implement this process as it resonates as the most important part of my life is my family.
We life in a world of distractions resulting in time spent together without meaningful connection. This book is the cure.
Short, easy read with an amazing concept. I'm totally going to implement this into my life with my kids. The time is so precious and life is so full, that we often choose others or a job over quality time with them. This is a great reminder and idea on how to take back that time.
A real quick listen. Useful info that we plan to implement as one of our family goals in the new year. Basically it’s one on one dates with kids every 90 days which we have done but never formally or consistently. Good motivation.
Simple and quick read, but life changing message. Spend quality one on one time with your kids. Too often we take those closest to us for granted. A good reminder. Get it on your calendar today.
I am a fan of “self help” books, and this was a pleasant and likely life changing read. Short and simple, but contains a plan for some really powerful relationship building processes.
I thought there wasn’t enough material to warrant a book. This would have been a perfect magazine article. I love the premise, but found it to be repetitive.
I’m going to keep reading this until I feel like I’m doing everything in this short guidance book. Realising that you only have 18 summers with your children should kick you into action to build your relationship with them proactively and deliberately. What we’re seeing, especially in the past 20 years, is a lot of busy parents that spend very little to zero focused time with their children. The title of the books is slightly misleading - it’s not about setting up meetings around the table with your whole family, it’s about spending quality time with each of your children individually (think about it like going on a date with your kids). You’ll probably immediately have a reason why this isn’t possible for your family or how to include all your children, and Jim addresses these concerns in the book. It’s less than 100 pages and it’ll take you an hour to read. If you’re a parent, don’t miss this one.
