Having been rescued from the forest, Elizabeth is shocked to find herself living with a small group of survivors. But when she's plunged into an unlikely reunion, she begins to realize that the task of saving humanity might require difficult decisions. Meanwhile, Thomas discovers the truth about another group of survivors. Old alliances are destroyed and new alliances are formed, but finally Thomas is forced to make a stand. Days 54 to 61 is the fifth book in the Mass Extinction Event series, continuing the story of a worldwide apocalypse seen from the eyes of two very different people in two very different parts of the US.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Days 54 to 61 is the fifth installment of the Mass Extinction Event series written by Amy Cross. The series follows two vastly different, unrelated people in their varied experience of the post-apocalyptic cataclysm. It seems and feels like a zombie apocalypse story, but it is so much more. Elizabeth had made her way from New York to a farm where she met up with a group of survivors who found that staying in one place was unsustainable. Forced to evacuate, there were further obstacles to survival, but when she is reunited with a person she believed gone, she begins to understand that survival requires intentional, pragmatic choices. (Brilliant! Not a sarcastic, brilliant, but a real-life brilliant.) Meanwhile Thomas from Oklahoma has traveled North then East to discover a group of survivors on the Lake Erie shore, where he quickly makes himself an invaluable asset to the community. He also is confronted with some pragmatic realities that require either a change in morality, intentional choices to do ill, or leaving the relative safety of a large group. Not only am I still enjoying the series, but I'm liking it more. This one is more like a 4 and a half Grey Geeks, but GR why are there no half stars?
First of all let me start by saying that I am invested in the two main characters so I will read the whole series BUT (spoilers mentioned)
Whyyyyyyyyy is the author writing the story like its been 5-10 years instead of 2 months? No one should be starving. There's no need to eat worms. Why are wounds getting infected when there are drug stores everywhere? Why is a newborn not drinking formula instead of watered down veggies? Yet they have chargers for laptop batteries. Arg! The blatant disregard of reality is so darn annoying!
Like I said, I'll finish because I am invested but its taking a lot of willpower to not continually roll my eyes.
For some reason this is the only book in this series not on Kindle. Not sure why, so being I had to read the paper copy it did take me a tad longer to finish. However, the format of this paperback is perfect! Just the right font size and spacing and not too heavy to hold.
Being the 5th book in this series, its not a stand alone novel. Elizabeth has been rescued by what appears to be military personnel. When she wakes she's got a new foot. They tell her it's her foot but later it's determined this was just a random foot. I'm thinking her father, yes, father; one of the people in charge is a bit more twisted then he's showing so far. The reunion was very shocking. I never saw that coming. How he treats Elizabeth is annoying. He's more standoffish than I expected. He's clearly hiding something for the get go. And the no tolerance policy is identical to Bob's from the beginning books. He's especially shady when it comes to Toad and his whereabouts. I spent the whole book convinced Toad wasn't dead as her father claims. The end of the book brought a smile to my face. I'm not sad to see Rachel go. At this point in the story, she just isn't right. However, I'm wondering if the author will have the child be a Guinea pig for the scientists. Her creepy staring fits are disturbing. I'm still saddened by Thomas' refusal to find his sister. When he's bitten and sure he's on death's door, I admit I was a bit confused. When did the zombies start biting? And when did that become contagious? This is explained at the end of the book. It's another twist by the author to keep the reader hooked. I'm in love with this series.
It's an extinction event people literally fall down and die because of a virus, doable. Like 99% of the population has perished, doable. Small pockets of humanity remains. No zombies, the infected ones die out quickly cause they rot to death. So with only a few thousand people in the whole USA and everybody is starving??? So did all the COSTCO, Sam's Club and every grocery store and warehouse run out of food in a month? It's the dumbest thing I've ever read. This writer needs to be at least a tiny bit more realistic. So stupid.
The grammatical errors are plenty. It seems this writer is throwing in some political thoughts that I know many will disagree with, but some will certainly agree with how liberals view things and blow small things out of proportion, and big things are all of nothing. Anyway, I will finish the series and hope for a good ending. If that is what the next entails.
I really got involved with this series and have been reading the past four days. I like the main characters and find myself suffering with them. I did find a few errors that I can't fix anymore because I only have the app on my kindle. I would be happy to proofread for free.
It seems that no one can be trusted. All the dictator wannabes keep crawling out of the woodwork convincing the weak willed to follow their crazy ideas of the best way to save the remains of humanity and start over. And each one is crazy in their own special way.
I have stuck with this series because of the main characters. But boy is it an eye roller. So many unrealistic and impossible scenarios. The thing that erks me the most is the trigger happiness. They all just want to kill each other. Even in the small "communities" they are after one another. Nobody seems to understand that in order for a viable future a few dozen individuals will not be enough.
Surprises abound this week. Some cities, military bases, Beantown, and the Lake, society is definitely gone, and only the strong survive. Yet out of the past is even a bigger surprise. Resilient is a good word!
I really like this series. It's a different take on the "end of the world" from other books I've read. I have read a lot of Amy Cross books and have enjoyed them. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Elizabeth is probably one of the most annoying characters in an apocalyptic based book as it is not understood how did she manage to survive as she lacks rationale. Almost all secondary characters including Elizabeth's father has changed due to what had happened to planet Earth for Miss Love and Peace not to see how lucky she was to survive 5 books as she lacks zero survival skills.
Another installment of the mass extinction event Saga by the love Amy Cross, if you have followed me for longer than five minutes you'll know I adore this authors work, always keeps me hooked and never fails to unnerve me, obviously i recommend you go read the first three before this one, but don't be unnerved by the size, this book ( and the others in the series ) flow beautifully so they don't weigh you down.
