Allen Carr was a British author and the founder of the global Allen Carr’s Easyway method, renowned for helping millions overcome smoking and other addictions. Born in Putney, London in 1934, Carr began smoking at 18 during National Service and struggled with the habit for over three decades. A qualified accountant, he finally quit in 1983 following a revelatory visit to a hypnotherapist. The experience didn’t directly cause him to quit, but it led to two key insights: that smoking was simply a form of nicotine addiction, and that withdrawal symptoms were minor and psychological in nature. These revelations inspired Carr to develop a revolutionary approach to quitting, one that did not rely on willpower, scare tactics, or substitution therapies.
Carr’s philosophy centered on removing the smoker’s fear of giving up. He argued that smoking merely relieves withdrawal symptoms from the previous cigarette, and that the supposed satisfaction gained is merely a return to the non-smoker’s normal state. Through live seminars, books, and multimedia resources, the Easyway method encourages smokers to continue smoking while they reframe their beliefs, ultimately extinguishing their final cigarette with clarity and confidence.
In 1985, Carr published The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, which became a bestseller and was translated into more than 45 languages. The success of his London clinic led to the establishment of over 100 Easyway centers in 35 countries, offering seminars to treat smoking, alcohol dependency, sugar addiction, and even fear of flying. His method’s credibility was bolstered by independent clinical trials, including studies in Ireland and the UK which found it as effective—if not more so—than standard cessation methods. This led to its adoption by NHS-approved services in England.
A key element of the Easyway clinics is that all facilitators are former addicts who successfully quit using the method themselves. They must complete extensive training and become licensed members of the Association of Allen Carr Therapists International.
Throughout his career, Carr also co-authored a wide range of Easyway books addressing various addictions and behavioral issues, often collaborating with Robin Hayley and John C. Dicey, the current Chairman and Global CEO of Allen Carr’s Easyway. Dicey, whom Carr mentored, continues to lead the organization’s development and public outreach.
Carr died of lung cancer in 2006 at age 72, though he had not smoked for 23 years. He attributed his illness to second-hand smoke exposure during seminars. Before his death, he remained committed to his mission, challenging governmental ties to nicotine replacement industries and advocating for wider access to his method.
Carr’s legacy continues through his clinics, books, and online programs, which have reached over 50 million people worldwide. His message remains consistent: quitting is not a sacrifice—it’s liberation.

Read this book in April 2018 and haven’t smoked a single cigarette since then.
Once I started reading it, after having smoked for eight consecutive years, it was like my life story put into words by this awesome guy, who happens to be an ex-smoker. If he was able to quit after thirty years of smoking, I could too. And I did, One thousand plus days now, that definitely says a lot about this amazing book 😁
Also, the author doesn’t scare you off my pointing out the ill effects of cigarettes, he simply explains the psychology of a smoker non-smoker and ex-smoker, that’s all. In fact he says “please continue smoking while you read this book, I won’t ask you stop” , well that’s when you know this guy really understands smokers

Thanks to my friend Susan for recommending this book. It was VERY enlightening, and has helped to put me in "Quit" mode. It's very strange......while reading this it was becoming almost like I needed to remind myself that I like smoking. I felt like maybe I have been hypnotized or something......and the thoughts - that were basically instinctual....just didn't pop in my head anymore. While reading this book.....something must happen....some kind of reverse brainwashing or something....that resets your brain back to non-smoker mode. Not sure, but I DO know this.....Once I have smoked my last cigarette....that's EXACTLY what it will be - MY LAST CIGARETTE. I enjoyed what I learned, it was easy reading, and I'm skimming thru it again before I get to the final stages of the book....I want to cement in what I've read - because the first time around helped so much....I'd like to make sure there's no slip-ups! Hopefully my son reads this review....he's been on my case for YEARS to quit!!!

2 and a half years ago I read this book, coming into it feeling helpless and extremely skeptical that a book could do what any one of my numerous attempts to quit could. But somehow, when I got to the end, following instructions I went outside for my last cigarette and with a feeling of peace and joy put it out, already a non-smoker.

A year and a half went by. I never even craved them and saw smokers with a feeling of pity instead of envy. Then I broke the cardinal rule of this book - believing, while I’d been drinking, that I could just have one. And for about half a year, I would have maybe a couple a month, thinking wow it’s so nice I got this under control.

But after half a year of that they silently began gripping me again. I wouldn’t just smoke once in a drunken while. I’d have one on a sober afternoon. And bringing me to today, suddenly I’d realized I was walking the line of being an actual smoker again.

I kept trying to quit but I’d slip in, believing once again that I was losing something when I did. I knew I needed this book again. And sure enough, here I am, armed again with this magical man’s subconscious programming (or rather removal of programming) and seeing cigarettes for what they really are - an obstacle to damn near everything I love doing in life.

Carr works one layer at a time to strip off the brainwashing a smoker gets trapped in. It’s already worked for millions of smokers and will probably forever be the best line of defense against this shitty drug addiction. When you read it, you’re ready by that last cigarette to throw off the chains and from that moment you’re already so damn grateful to be off the things.

THANK YOU ALLEN CARR. There are very few books that can compete with This one for the positive effects it had on my life. Buy a smoker this book today!

Don't bother downloading. Did not finish reading, as it seems like some kind of sales pitch.

Highly effective, but I think the instructions could have been a bit clearer.
