My Name Isn't Oof!: Warren the Warbler Takes Flight

Rate this book
A sweet and humorous story about a young bird who is ready to leave the nest, but, unlike his siblings, can't quite get the knack of flying. My Name Isn't Oof! has a positive message about not giving up!

Meet Warren, a fledgling whose first attempt to fly lands him on the ground with a resounding oof! He's soon joined by curious four-legged forest animals who gather to give him tips on flying, though they've never flown themselves. As they go through the motions with humorous results, Warren gets inspired to give flying another try. With the help of his new friends will he succeed to soar?

In addition to the delightful narrative, there is back matter that introduces young readers to Warren's species, the Townsend's warbler, and shares what to do if you find a young bird on the ground.

My Name Isn’t Oof! Warren the Warbler Takes Flight by Michael Galligan, illustrated by Jeremiah Trammell. PICTURE BOOK. Little Bigfoot, 2019. $18. 9781632171931

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Warren wants to fly like his siblings, but his first try is a disaster. The animals on the forest floor have all kinds of advice for him. And for some reason they keep calling him Oof!

Warren’s story is a very cute look at Warren’s struggles. It hints at listening skills too – Warren learns how to fly from the animals’ advice and they don’t listen to him try to tell them his name. Trammell’s pictures are utterly delightful.

Warren's brothers and sister have left the nest, now it's Warren's turn to take flight. But when he steps off the branch and takes a breath, he falls. Instead of shouting "I'm flying!" like his siblings, he shouts "I'm..... oof!" leading the forest animals to think his name is Oof. A series of kind animals gather to see if Oof is okay and give him flying tips. With support and encouragement, Warren tries again and flies overhead singing down to them "And my name isn't Oof. It's Warren!" Backmatter includes information about Warblers and what to do if you find a baby bird.

A cute book with charming forest illustrations about a little bird learning to fly. When Warren the warbler falls out of the nest while practicing flying, all the other animals come and give him flying advice (jump! spread your wings! flap! land on your feet!). Since each animal suggests a new action, this could be easy to make interactive.

Cute book. The illustrations were colorful & engaging. The storyline was cute & was such a great lesson about not giving up. We also got to talk to our kids about listening to others while reading this book. It contains repetition & onomatopoeia, which are great for learning.
