Josie Chadwick dreams of marrying for love in Cornwall, England, but with her father's debt threatening to destroy all she holds dear, her romantic options are dwindling. When her elder sister Delia is disowned, Josie finds herself heiress of Chadwick Park, torn between dreams and duty. After sacrificing her heart to atone for Delia's sin, Josie clings to the hope she will learn to love a distant husband, whom she fears is incapable of requiting her affection.
Charles Radcliffe's heart has been scarred and hardened by rejection. He fears hurting his new bride, but his fears of betrayal and rejection are stronger, making it impossible for him to trust her love--let alone the love of her God.
As Josie and Charles face their new life together, ominous events warn of dark family secrets that could shatter them both. More than a loveless marriage is at stake if they cannot stand as one. Will they learn to trust God and each other before it's too late?
Kaitlin Covel has a thirst for adventure much like the heroines of her stories. She is an old-fashioned romantic, and if she could time travel to any historical period, it would be the Regency Era. Here in the 21st century, she is a certified Nutritional Therapy Technician, but writing is her passion, whether it's fiction or non-fiction. She has honed her craft since childhood, benefiting from the insights of other writers through professional writing associations such as the Jerry Jenkins Writer’s Guild and Hope*writers. She lives with her family in Maine, where she enjoys teaching the teen Sunday school class at her church. Her favorite things are family, books, history, chocolate, music, the ocean, and strong cups of tea. Visit her official author website at: www.kaitlincovel.com.
I thought this book sounded like something I would enjoy with the setting and marriage of convenience theme, but unfortunately the writing style is not my cup of tea. I found it melodramatic and overly preachy. The characters are all tormented by secrets, self-pity, or rejection. Josie draws strength from her faith, and often pleads with the Lord in desperation. The tone of the book reminded me a bit of Wuthering Heights, dark with quickly shifting moods. I think it is a book that I would recommend to readers who enjoy a healthy dose of angst, drama, and extremely emotional characters.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
On the Cornwall coast in Regency England, Josie Chadwick wants nothing more than a peaceful life where her family is happy and in harmony. When bad decisions by her father and sister force Josie to consider a marriage of convenience in order to preserve their social standing, she hopes for the best. Her new husband has a troubled past that haunts him, making the beginning of their marriage very difficult indeed. Secrets abound and danger seems to lurk in every corner, denying Josie the peace she desires.
The level of drama in this book is off the charts. I lost count of the number of secret marriages, disowned offspring, and illegitimate children that were found within these pages. I did feel that some of the turns of plot were hard to follow in a rational manner, such as Josie having never once met the man who lived on a neighboring estate and had for a year been openly courting her sister. Even if she had never seen him around town, she and her sister were close and lived together, so surely she would have met him during their courtship.
One thing I would caution other readers about is the fact that this book contains more violence than I expected. The relationship between Josie and her new husband is quite contentious, and I actually had to stop reading the book for a while after an attempted marital rape. That really bothered me, as I have dear friends and family members who have suffered in abusive marriages, and I'm not sure this is the right kind of conflict to drive the message that the author wanted to bring to the story. There are also other instances of sexual violence in the book, so if that is triggering for you, please be aware this is one you might need to skip.
Kaitlin Covel is a very expressive author who has a lot to offer with her stories. If anything, I would encourage her to develop a subtlety to her writing, as I believe that would only increase the impact her words have on the page.
I received an advance reading copy of the book from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.
A gem of a novel, Atoning for Ashes is historical fiction at its best. The detailed setting is richly written and the relatable characters draw you right into a story full of heart, drama, and redemption. Kaitlin Covel is one to watch.
Love love and love this story!! We all have scars from our past that can seem impossible to heal, but by God's grace His love can heal our broken hearts. He uses people in our lives to demonstrate His love to us, even those who seem impossible to love. True love fights through anything and everything, no matter how difficult our circumstances may be. No one is beyond repair and miracles still happen every day. The key is to keep praying and trust that God always has a plan.
With a well-developed plot, I was pulled into this unfolding story right from the beginning. It took me a little bit to get into the heart of the characters, mostly be because they hid their true selves so very well.
There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. About the time you think you have it all figured out, something changes and you discover that your ideas of who is behind the mystery fall apart like a house of cards.
There are some adult scenarios, alcoholism, spousal abuse, fornication, and attempted rape. It's real and honest while reminding us of the matchless forgiveness and grace that God offers to us all.
Fans of Christian Historical Romance with Gothic undertones are sure to be well pleased with this page-turning story. There are a few areas I found repetitive. I give this story 3.5 stars and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
(I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including Netgalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)
Georgette Heyer meets Jane Eyre meets Madeline Brent, and Jane Austen metaphorically writes the foreward. I spent the second half of the book in tears. I'll write a more coherent review later.
12/20 - coherent review as promised
oh. my. stars.
(possibly coherent. we'll see.)
Atoning for Ashes was the first novel I've read in 36 hours all year. (Yes, that includes my own.)
I couldn't put it down. The prose was so delicious, like a good thick hot chocolate, with the bite and snap of a gingerbread...
I saw so much of myself in this story. In Josie, in Charles, in the supporting characters.
The places this novel took me were rich and vivid, elegantly painted, exquisitely detailed.
The struggles of the characters were real and poignant.
Recommend for 16+ due to tastefully portrayed married life, and thematic elements.
I generally enjoyed this historical Christian romance. I am not a fan of romance novels but this one had enough interesting aspects to it that it kept my interest. It was an era in England when young women could dream of marrying for love. Sometimes they were required by parents to marry for financial security or to ensure a family lineage. That's what happened to Josie. Her father had arranged a marriage to help alleviate his debts. When her older sister refused the arranged marriage, Josie agreed to do it. But Charles, the wealthy man she has agreed to marry, is a deeply wounded man. We wonder if Josie will be able to break through the wall Charles has created and find the lovable man within.
Covel has crafted a pretty good novel for a debut effort. She has included important themes, such as honesty, forgiveness and trust. On the other side are deceit, treachery and vengeance. There are a few violent scenes making this novel not appropriate for youth readers. My favorite aspect of the novel is how the characters grow in their faith, especially Charles. The presence of Christianity is very strong in the novel but is also very natural to the characters and their experiences. That was refreshing to experience.
A typical romance plot line is boy meets girl, there is are obstacles to their romance, obstacles are overcome and they live happily every after. There are several obstacles in this plot. The main one seemed to be Charles' character. He is sometimes an angry man, often drinking to excess. The relationship between Josie and Charles was turbulent. It seemed to me, however, that this obstacle then overcoming the obstacle aspect of the plot was repetitive. There would be a confrontation and Charles would then appear somewhat loving. But a scene soon after had him back to being angry hurting man again. He would become somewhat loving but then repeat the pattern. I would have appreciated the novel more if some of those similar scenes had been cut.
I do recommend this novel to readers who like historical Christian romance. There is a good bit of suspense included. There are lessons on forgiveness and trust and faithfulness. The Christian message is clear and woven well into the plot.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Atoning for Ashes is Kaitlin Covel's debut novel and a new-to-me author. Her story is robust with lots of layers to a complex plot. Eloquent descriptions help you travel to Paris, Italy, and England, and you can really tell how much she researched to get the details just right. It is a book worth reading. Although there are a few spots you may feel like putting it down, I encourage you to read to the end. There are several surprising twists that are quite intriguing.
Who would like this: Those who enjoy epic stories with lots of layers, stories where broken souls are restored, stories of married couples learning to love one another and break free from the hurts of the past, and those who enjoy a bit of mystery and danger.
Rating and Why: I gave this story a 3.5 because this was a story that had sections I skimmed and felt a little preachy in areas. It wasn't enough to keep me from enjoying the story, but I did have to push myself to read to the end. The first half of the book felt like a pure romance, but in the second half my interest was really snagged by the danger and mystery.
*I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. The above opinions are my own and are in no way influenced.*
Don’t you love finding a new author that has penned a book that is so captivating it grabs your attention within the first few pages? Me, too! Even better, how about if that novel pulls you so deeply inside that you just have to finish it in one sitting? Now you know it is a fantastic book, a page turner. That’s right. That’s what we are discussing today. Let the hubby fend for himself and the dishes pile up, I am reading author Kaitlin Covel’s “Atoning for Ashes” Christian historical romance and cannot be bothered.
Author Covel is a delightful find for me. She is an exquisitely talented wordsmith that weaves a mesmerizing tale. Her characters are well rounded, flaws and all, and relatable. We became fast friends. Emotions were transferred from her characters to me through the author’s extraordinary writing ability. At times I was a nervous wreck and others giving advice to fictional characters or rejoicing with them.
Everything in her book was well researched, well organized, and extremely well written. I loved how she surprised me sometimes with various twists and turns. The author’s style of writing is nothing short of poetic. Even the conversations flowed smoothly. Covel writes English Regency romance as if she has experienced it first hand and passes the experience along to readers. This is a book to get lost in, but then some dark things happen. It is grabbed my attention early and held it all the way through until the end.
Even though it is a God glorifying book, it tackles some adult issues. Expect fornication, attempted rape, alcoholism, pregnancy outside of marriage, murder, abuse, and struggles of self worth among the more difficult subjects in Atoning for Ashes. On the other side, look for redemption, forgiveness, grace, restoration, hope, love, trust, and family to shine brightly.
There are too many favorite quotes to list. I adore Christian books that do not shy away from discussing God and His mercy. It is especially refreshing reading about grace and redemption. If it is a Christian novel, please don’t make me hunt for the lesson and inspiration. This one did not make me search.
Now for something that did not sit well with me. First let me say that I am a grandmother so age may play into this, but I did not like the use of the word hell. If you are talking about the place where Satan inhabits, then it is fine, but if you are frustrated, don’t use it in a Christian novel. This seemed out of place in Christian fiction to me. Just my opinion. It might not bother you.
I would highly recommend this jewel of a Christian romance fiction that has mystery, intrigue, inspiration, and action. Because of the adult content I would say an older teen (18) or young adult should be the youngest age to read this. A mature women’s group would certainly find a lot to discuss using this. Even with the one thing that I did not like, it earned a 5 out of 5 stars from me. I expect we will be hearing a lot about author Kaitlin Covel in the months to come. Watch for her. Mark your calendars for when this sure to be best seller comes out next month. You will be glad to have read the debut from this budding new author. I absolutely was.
i received an advanced reader copy but was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are my own, honest ones.
Atoning for Ashes is the debut novel of Author Kaitlin Covel and what a debut it is! This book is well-researched, well-written, and well-plotted (if that's actually a word!) Rich with historical details, this book will take you on a journey to Regency England that reminds me of the works of the Bronte sisters (Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights). Ms. Covel has an excellent mastery of the English language and a poetic writing voice. The sentences themselves are full of poetic imagery that will tickle the senses and delight the mind. Atoning for Ashes is intense! The story itself stays highly emotionally-charged with very little reprieve. The book is written for a mature audience as it deals with such difficult topics as alcoholism, attempted rape, spousal abuse, fornication, and adultery. It is a beautiful picture of grace, forgiveness and the "beauty from ashes" that is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. This book is great for those looking for something more gritty or realistic than maybe your typical historical romance. One of my favorite elements of the story is the scripture interwoven through the dialogue and narrative. God's word flows from the hearts of the characters, especially the beloved governess who acts as Josie's mentor as she tries to navigate her way through a loveless marriage. Atoning for Ashes is full of twists and turns. What starts out as a typical historical romance quickly and smoothly becomes a historical romantic suspense and mystery as the past unfolds into a tangle web of lies, deceit, and treachery. Atoning for Ashes will keep you on your toes from start to finish. The thing I didn’t like were more personal preference than anything wrong with the book. It was the story element involving a "ghost" and usage of the word "hell" as an explicative. I received an ARC from the author. A review was not required. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Atoning for Ashes is Kaitlin Covel’s debut novel. I thought it was a pretty good historical. It is full of adventure, action, romance, mystery, twists and turns. I never knew what would happen next that kept me wanting to keep turning the pages. I loved the various messages that I got from reading it.
I am giving Atoning for Ashes four and a half stars. I cannot wait to see where Miss Covel’s imagination will take her readers to next.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
I received an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
Lots of story lines! This is not 1 simple story... when you think you have things figured out, there is a new twist. This is not a typical Christian Historical fiction, where boy & girl meet, there is a struggle of some type (usually a 3rd party or character flaw), a true conversion of the heart, and a happy ending. This story has all that & more! There is manipulation from family members, there is murder, a convoluted mysterious background that isn’t clear till 3/4+ of the way through, and a real good against evil battle to the end. While the book wasn’t a 100% page turner and moved slower for 1/4, the rest was riveting. (I remember telling my friend that I kept thinking that the story sounded finished, but I was only 23% done...)
This book does have much heavy drinking in it & very unconverted characters who act in such manner. Often times it felt as if the main character was the only Christian element, not to worry- later another conversion happens & a truth is revealed, so there are more Christians. That said, this book has a tangle of lies to unweave... for truth did set free a soul captive by events that shaped the past & shadows the present.
I enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a busy book, with high adventure and likes intrigue.
This was a beautiful love story with many twist and turns! The characters were wonderful including the ones you love to dislike. The book is about forgiveness and trusting in God always. The sacrifice that was made for love and family is beautiful. The author does a wonderful job in showing how God heals and bring beauty out of ashes. This story touched the most inner parts of my souls and held me captivated to the vey last sentence.
Atoning for Ashes is set in Regency England during the time when young girls dreamed of finding true love and marriage but often were forced to marry to save their family's name or fortune. This is the case of Josephine Chadwick. Her father intended for his eldest daughter to marry into wealth but Delia Chadwick woud have no part of it. Josephine (Josie) observes her father's distress and his increasing ill-health and she volunteers to wed Charles Radcliffe to save her family from bankruptcy. She actually has very good intentions but it becomes apparent that Charles is reluctant and he isn't going to be a loving husband. I found their early marriage hard to read about because of his drinking and unpleasantness but Josie's sweetness and devotion soon begin to influence Charles Radcliffe and he starts to change. It is through Josie's goodness that he begins to believe in God.
This debut novel by Kaitlin Covel features mystery, intrigue and mistaken identities; there are shady business transactions, deceit and treachery, and even murder and attempted murder. Atoning for Ashes has some adult situations that aren't always written about in Christian fiction but the author buffers them with a strong Christian message. She shows how some of the characters grow in their faith and she often uses scripture in the plotline. There are also some beautiful passages that show trust in God. As Josie recalls how she never felt truly loved by her mother and as she wonders if she will ever enjoy a deep romantic love, she realizes that "In all of her life, only God's love had never disappointed. His love was without condition, constant and faithful as the sunshine". And later, as she faces extreme danger and perhaps death, Josie is reminded by her long-time housekeeper Esther that "God is just, Josie," she said gently. "He is fighting our battles even as we speak."
Kaitlin Covel has successfully captured the culture and mores of Regency England and I was reminded that the goodness and evil that was present during that time are still present today. This may be her first published novel but I feel that it certainly won't be her last! I recommend Atoning for Ashes for anyone who enjoys Christian historical fiction.
I received a complimentary advanced reader copy from the author but my review is voluntary.
What an amazing story this is! I was so impressed with the writing, the romance, the suspense and the faith elements, I couldn't get enough and was kind of sad when it ended! I highly recommend this swoon worthy romance, with a large chunk of mystery, and some rather serious suspense woven throughout the entire book! It sincerely had me on the edge of my seat, and I did not see that out come happening, it was a true shock!
This book was intriguing and mysterious. It had me from the get go. Set in an era where arranged marriages were common and most wealthy people married for convenience, it is sure to draw you in, as the plot twists and turns with hauntings, forbidden love, secrets, and much more.
The main character Josephine, is a kind, patient soul, willing to martyr her own happiness for that of others. Ever the peacemaker, she goes above and beyond attempting to keep her family together and happy, always sacrificing. However, the sacrifices are not without pain and heartache. I loved the fact that I could relate to her. There were times she wanted to rant and rave in her pain, lost her faith in God, and almost gave up hope, but she had a constant reminder of God's love for her, and through that love she was able to love those around her, even the most unlovable.
Esther, was another one of my favorite characters, with secrets in her past, and yet an undying faith in her Savior, and lots of courage. And dear Charles, with all his demons, would clearly become the hero in the end... I hoped anyhow. You'll have to get a copy to find out.
The author doesn't shy away from touchy subjects: a rocky marriage, an angry, abusive husband, addictions, secret love, and more. I also appreciated how Kaitlin wove Scripture, faith, and character building so well through the pages of the story. There was so much food for thought.
The plot starts out well, then kind of dawdles along til about midway through the book, then picks up and takes a most unexpected twist as the climax approaches. I was quite taken by surprise. I kind of knew something was going to happen, but I wasn't expecting that!
The only thing I would say I would have chosen differently, was for the book to have been a tad bit shorter. It felt a little drawn out, but that may have been just the fact that reading e-books is a little harder for me or that as I was racing to the finish, it seemed I couldn't get there fast enough! I would highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Kaitlin's works in the future!
I received an e-copy of this book from the author and was not required or asked to review positively. All opinions are my own.
Kaitlin Covel is a new-to-me author and I must say I was enthralled by this book. I was also enraged at the villain, a little disappointed with the fathers and amazed with the H/h. There was so much crying in this book and most of it was by the H/h. I understand the fear of rejection, but jumping to conclusion after conclusion, and all wrong, is a little bothersome. There was a certain amount of self-pity and self-doubt as well.
The plot was suspenseful and keeps ya guessing. It is well written and believable. I was correct in my assumptions of a lot of things in the story even though I did second-guess myself a couple of times. I really liked the story, except for the amount of crying. It seemed a bit much. I found the author portrayed each character's faith, or lack there of, adequately. I did not find the story to be too preachy as some may have found it. The world could pay a bit more attention to the Good Book and the Almighty and we would be much better off.
After being rejected by one woman, Charles Radcliff is talked into marrying her sister, by said sister to save her family from ruin and to make his father happy. Josie Chadwick is the sister that talks Charles into marrying her. So basically she is martyring herself for her family as she helps her pregnant sister runaway with the father of her baby. Charles and Josie's marriage starts out rather rocky and emotions run high throughout the book. Sacrifices are made, the two eventually fall in love with each other, however, no road to true love runs smoothly.
If you like clean, historical romance with some suspense thrown in, then you will like this book. I will be reading the next book from this author in the future. Enjoy!
I received a review copy of this book from the author; all opinions in this review are my own.
Atoning for Ashes is the debut novel by Kaitlin Covel so naturally I was excited read her work. I found her writing comparable to some popular, published authors. And that cover is absolutely beautiful, isn't it?
The storyline is filled with adventure, mystery and fairly well crafted characters. As with most novels I have read there are some characters that I liked more than others so that didn't interfere with my feelings and enjoyment of this book. I will say that this book required my full and undivided attention so make sure to be in your favorite comfortable reading spot before starting this one because there is a lot going on which made for a nice long read.. I loved Josie's story, she is a wonderful character who has a good heart and who tries to make her marriage a happy and successful one. It took me longer to warm up to Charles but once I did, I started to understand him much more.
As much as I liked, Atoning for Ashes, I will have to say that there are some situations written in the book that will not be appropriate for the very young reader but they are unfortunate situations that can happen to anyone. There is a message of forgiveness and faith which I really liked.
I received an advanced reader copy of Atoning for Ashes and was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are my own.
On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, Atoning for Ashes by Kaitlin Covel is a chocolate dipped peanut butter cup stuffed oreo. Crammed full of sugar and flavors, one nibble will do ever so often. So much is happening in this sugary confection.
[copy received. opinions my own.]
Josie wants to marry for love, but when her sister deviates from their father's plans for them, Josie rushes in to save the day. From alcoholic yet sweet husband to an untrustworthy father-in-law, she has a lot to manage. All she wants is a happy ending, but it seems that everything is against her to gain that wish.
Atoning for Ashes is absolutely a page-turner. Even as I sometimes got tangled in the layers of the story, I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. Kaitlin Covel covered so much in this story, and it occasionally felt like too much was going on. At moments, I couldn't take the characters seriously in the way that they spoke to each other. And yet, I did enjoy Josie, the main character, as she tried to grapple with her circumstances and make the best of them.
If you enjoy historical romance with intrigue and sometimes cheesy love language, then you'll like Atoning for Ashes.
“My God makes my brokenness beautiful, because His light shines through the cracks into the lives of others.”
This is a fabulous debut novel. The characters had a lot of depth to them and you could really feel and empathize with their struggles. There were times when I felt like if I had been the main character, I wouldn’t have stayed. I wouldn’t have continued to love (especially after he hits her and tried to rape her in a drunken rage). Proving to him that she wouldn’t leave though is what made him realize she really did love him. I loved how it was not an insta-love book. Everything they have was hard fought and sometimes dark and gritty. There were some plot twist that weren’t very twisty, since I expected them a long time before they’re brought to light. I also thought there were some slow parts. It is a heavy Christian novel. But, as mentioned above there is heavier subject matter. There are closed door love scenes, attempted rape, alcoholism, pregnancy outside of marriage, murder, and deep struggles of self worth. I received an advanced copy from the author in exchange for my personal and honest review.
This story capture my attention, concern and hope for women. Josie chose to make the ultimate sacrifice for her family. She reminded me of the value placed on women because of the mistakes of the men in their lives. She is a strong woman who fights for everyone but no one really fights for her. I didn’t agree with her choices but I admire her for doing it. She teaches us about obedience to God and doing what she thinks is best at her expense. As for the hero I wanted to dislike him for not standing up for himself and then Josie. He was a product of his past and time. His weaknesses remind teaches us that we all would put up with things for safety or comfortability. He eventually redeemed himself in my eyes as his conversations with God progressed. This story touch on several topics that you will not get bored.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and the opinions expressed are entirely my own.
One of the best books I have read in a very long time !!! The perfect blend of History Romance , suspence and family secrets. This book grabbed my attention from the beginning and I could not put it down. Josie and Charles are forced into marriage by their father’s insistence . Josie a deboted Christian women is determined to be the devoted wife and love Charles regardless of how he treats her. Charles is heartened and wounded by his past is not at all pleased about the arrangement . Will Josie’s unconditional love towards him be enough to melt his heartened heart or will the past and family secrets destroy them both and their future together ??? The twist and turns of this book are sure to hold your interest until the very end . I highly recommend it !!
You are sure to enjoy this gripping story. I loved every minute of it. So many unexpected twists, and each one has you wondering what will happen next. I fell in love with Josie. I think my favorite aspect of Josie is her faith in God. I loved how no matter what happened, she gave it to God. Sometimes she had to ask for forgiveness for trying to do things her way first, but she always remembered that God is in control, and can work in ways she can't. Charles I fell in love with in a different way. From the beginning you know that he is struggling with something, you just don't know what, or to what extent it has affected him. Throughout the story you can see his struggle to love Josie the way he knows she deserves to be loved, and to get over his past. Find out if they can overcome the past, and get their happily ever after. You won't be disappointed, I promise. **I received this book from the author for review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all thoughts an opinions are my own.
This book definitely has some unexpected turn of events. I am not going to give any of them away, of course. I loved that it is an Christian fiction and a historical. Lots of action and suspense.
I really enjoyed Josie and Charles story. I never knew what was going to happen next. I loved the part when they went on the Gondola ride. They were on their sorta Honeymoon at the time but has to go home soon after. The book is interesting throughout but really got eventful when they got home. I am definitely look forward to reading more of the author books in the future.
I received an advanced copy of the book from the author. The review is my own opinion.
I have a nasty habit of not reading the descriptions of books I read. sometimes this leads to great disappointment, not so this time. I have to admit from the cover I expected to read a light Regency. However I was pleasantly surprised to find a Gothic novel. I enjoyed the interplay between Josie and Charles as they find out about each other after they are already married. The suspense throughout the book was quite intriguing. This is definitely a good book to curl up under the covers with on a cold and windy night! So grab a pot of tea and a few biscuits and settle in for a great read!
I was given a copy of this book by the author with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.
I enjoyed this book. The storyline kept me wanting to read more. There were a few twists and turns and what in the world just happened, which are all wonderful things to experience when you are reading. I will say I skipped over the more “He brings all the divine love and..” parts. I know this is a Christian romance and I have read quite a few of them but this one had a “preachy” aspect to it. At least to me it did. That’s not a bad thing and if you enjoy reading about a heavy faith then you will love those parts. At the end of the day it was a fun, quick read that I would probably re-read again.
This is Kaitlin Covel's debut novel. It was amazing. This book kept my attention throughout the entire book. It first of all was God honoring. God's love and grace was used throughout the book. The story had many twists and turns that kept me on my toes! It had romance, mystery and just plain life happenings! The language used gave me a detailed picture of all the scenery and all the happenings in the story. I feel the author did her research also on the historical setting. I highly recommend it!
This is an excellent read! Kaitlin Covel has set the bar very high for debut novels! By the third chapter I was enthralled by the setting and characters and hooked into the plot. The tale has many twists and turns and some real surprises. It is written with sincerity and heart and attention to every detail. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
Riveting and intensely beautiful. A perfect marriage of historical romance and the timeless truth of God's Word. Not just a good read but powerful and life changing. The best book I've read in a long time. Couldn't put it down. Someone- who can stay true to the book- needs to make this into a movie.
Very dark, foreboding, a lot of drama. It kind of made me depressed and my mind was going in circles throughout the whole read. There was so much back and forth with everything that I felt like I was on a roller coaster! It did keep my attention though, but there was times I had to say enough already and put the book down. Sorry, I was hoping I would like the book a little more.
