He studied in Paris where he befriended fellow student Jean-Paul Sartre at the Lycée Henri IV. He became a member of the French Communist Party, and much of his writing reflects his political beliefs, although he resigned from the party upon hearing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1939. He died in the Battle of Dunkirk, fighting against the German army in World War II.
His works include the novels Antoine Bloye (1933), Le Cheval de Troie and La Conspiration (1938) and the essays "Les Chiens de garde" (1932) and "Aden Arabie" (1931), which introduced him to a new audience when republished in 1960 with a foreword by Sartre; in particular, the incipit "I was twenty, I won't let anyone say those are the best years of your life" (J’avais vingt ans. Je ne laisserai personne dire que c’est le plus bel âge de la vie.) became one of the most influential slogans of student protests during May '68.

A perfect book. Worth reading for the prose alone.
In general, the book is about alienation, the numbness of a working life and the separation that comes with ascending class lines. Nizan tracks Bloye's sleepwalk from birth to death, as each aspect of his life becomes sterilised and dispassionate and the past becomes something truly lost. Of course, this implies a very dismal existentialist (Nizan was a contemporary/ friend/ rival of Sartre), even nihilist reading. But it is the world that is set up in counter to this- the world of childhood, of love, of nature, of dream- that distinguishes it, the rays of a sublimated beauty penetrating and darkening the desert of modern life. Antoine Bloye is a scathing critique of petty-bourgeois life that has lost no relevance in the intervening 90 years. It is tragic, brutal and despairing, a sad evisceration of the apathy of atomism, the lonely crowds, the disconnection of man from man. But it is primarily a longing call for something else, a world just beneath the skin, beneath manners, and, most importantly, beneath class.
"Thus they range a universe utterly removed from that of their parents. This wonderful time of adventure comes to all children rich and poor. All little human beings are alike before this naïve equality withers in the pitiless light of incidents and teachings that ill accord with childhood fantasies. Between the ages of five and twelve all people understand each other. When children escape the supervision of grown-ups, childish comradeship neglects all barriers, and they play unmindful of sinister idols and family ties."

Memory is guile. That established, why hasn't anyone reviewed this novel? It likely isn't five stars but it does find velocity with the premise of La Bete Human, if only from an administrative perspective. That should count for something. Nizan bobbles about on my memory 's white capped surface. He is but one of many who should be wrestled from the milieu and examined with due sobriety.

Written as if from 10,000 feet and from the voice of a god. Not an untrue or unworthy word in 250 pages.
"A brilliant expose of the hollowness of our society, and a warning to us all."
Follows life of Frenchman at turn of 20th century -- a railway man who doesn't discover how empty is his life until the end. Sad, but such a starkly true description of life in general, it's illuminating and refreshing in a way.

Le récit extraordinaire de la vie d'un homme ordinaire.
Paul Nizan est d'une lucidité incroyable - une lucidité qui fait mal, parfois. Et dire qu'il n'avait pas 30 ans quand il a écrit ce livre.

God skildring av fransk industralisering og tomheten som innhenter Antoine på slutten av klassereisen.

خیلی جملات ناب و بکر زیاد داره ولی این جملات در طول قرن بیستم اینقدر با کلمات و جمله بندی های متفاوت تکرار شده که شاید بشه گفت اون تأثیر گذاری ِ درستی که در زمان خودش داشته رو از دست داده . به اقتضای زمانش خیلی با مسأله ی کارمندی که به شکلی اون رو برده داری نوین می داند و مکیدن خون کارمندان توسط اربابان زالو صفت ، درگیر بوده و در نتیجه تهی بودن زندگی های کارمندان را از معنا و مفهوم زندگی واقعی به شکلی درآور توصیف میکنه.البته فکر میکنم سبک روایتش خیلی بدیع بود

عمر پل نیزان در بهارِ جوانی به پایان رسید، اما در همان زمان کوتاه، زندگیاش سرشار از رویدادها و دگرگونیهای فکری و سیاسی بود. نیزان تحصیل در رشته فلسفه را موقتاً رها کرد و در 1926 راهی عدن شد؛ جایی که با تأثیرات ویرانگرِ استعمار بریتانیا از نزدیک روبهرو شد. حاصل مشاهداتش کتابی به نام «عدن، شبهجزیره» شد که در آن، با نگاهی تیزبینانه و انتقادی، استعمار را به نقد کشید. شروع کتاب با جملهای تکاندهندهای است که بعدتر به شعاری در جنبش می 68 فرانسه بدل شد:
« بیست ساله بودم. هرگز نمیگذارم کسی بگوید این زیباترین دوران زندگی است.»
نیزان در بازگشت به فرانسه، عضو حزب کمونیست شد و دوازده سال عضوی فعال باقی ماند. اما در 1939 و زمانی که هیتلر و استالین پیمانی سیاسی بستند. نیزان که تنها با امپریالیسم و سرمایهداری سر ستیز نداشت و نسبت به فاشیسم نیز موضعی جدی داشت جدی داشت، از مواضع حزب کمونیست فرانسه دلسرد شد و در پی ناخرسندی از واکنش آنها، از حزب کناره گرفت و سرانجام در 1940 و در سیوپنج سالگی در جبهه نبرد با آلمانِ نازی در دانکرک کشته شد.
اما داستان پل نیزان با مرگِ او پایان نیافت. پس از مرگ آثار ادبی و فلسفیاش به دلایلی گوناگون از جمله سلطه و نفوذ حزب کمونیست در محافل فرهنگی فرانسه، برای مدتی به حاشیه رانده شد و نامش در خطر فراموشی قرار گرفت. این سکوت اما با مقدمهای که دوستش ژان پل سارتر بر چاپ جدید کتاب عدن، شبهجزیره نوشت، شکسته شد. سارتر در مقدمه از خشم نیزان گفت، از مردی که نمیخواست نظارهگر نظم موجود جهان باشد؛ بلکه میخواست آن را دگرگون کند.
«آنتوان بلوایه» نخستین رمان نیزان است که در 1933 منتشر شد. رمانی درباره بیگانگی، گسست و فروپاشی تدریجی انسان از خانواده، طبقه و در نهایت خویشتن. قهرمان داستان، آنتوان بلوایه، کارگرزادهای سختکوش است که میکوشد با صعود از نردبان طبقاتی، به طبقۀ بورژوا راه یابد و در این راه از خیر عشق و محبت دختری زحمتکش (مارسل) میگذرد و تن به ازدواجی سرد و بیعاطفه با دختر رئیسِ خود میدهد؛ رئیسی که ارزش انسانها را تنها در توانایی شغلیشان میسنجید. مارسل در واپسین دیدارشان، تصویری از ایستگاه نهایی این مسیر ترسیم میکند: ملال.
در طول رمان شاهد کشمکشهای متعدد آنتوان با خود، خانواده و محیط اطرافش هستیم. توصیفهای دقیق و روایت پرکشش پل نیزان از این تضادها که حاصل شناخت عمیق او از جایگاه انسان در نظم سرمایهداری صنعتی است، نقطه قوت اثر بهشمار میآید.
پایانِ رمان به شروع جنگ جهانی اول گره میخورد. این تقارن، ناگزیر یادآور رمان سترگ «خانواده تیبو» اثر روژه مارتن دوگار است که آن هم در دهه 30 منتشر شد. آنجا نیز در پایان رمان و در پسزمینۀ همان جنگ، قهرمان اصلی که از قضا بورژوایی به نام آنتوان است، با تبعات سنگین جنگ روبهرو میشود.

Een ideologische fabel, ooit beschouwd als de eerste Franse socialistisch-realistische roman (1933). Heel nauwkeurig en gebalanceerd uitgewerkt, in een grenzeloze woordenschat. De dominerende sfeer is behoorlijk deprimerend vermits het hoofdpersonage zich niet eens tegen beter weten in laat gebruiken door een maatschappelijk en economisch systeem dat hem in wezen als quantité négligeable beschouwt.
Getuige daarvan deze paragrafen geplukt uit de laatste hoofdstukken:
'Antoine n'avait rien créé, il avait laissé se dissiper sa force, il n'avait rien inventé, il n'avait pas frayé avec les hommes, il comprenait enfin vaguement qu'il n'aurait pu être sauvé que par des créations qu'il aurait faites, par des exercices de sa puissance. Tout ce qui avait empli sa vie tombait en poussière. Vraiment, s'il pouvait recommencer sa vie et la remplir!'
'C'étaient des actes simplement enregistrés dans des dossiers ficelés et poussiéreux, des actes qui avaient simplement assuré le maintien des profits des usines et des Compagnies et la docilité des ouvriers qui travaillaient pour elles. Ils ne se souvenaient point de créations véritables, ni de relations humaines, leurs ouvriers, comme leurs chefs, avaient été pour eux des étrangers, ou des ennemis. Ils avaient été des acteurs solitaires, des acteurs sans aucune dignité. Ils feignaient d'être fiers de leurs souvenirs, mais dans le secret de leur cœur, ils ne les aimaient pas.'

Such exquisite prose! It begins with the death of Antoine (in the vein of Ivan Ilyich and Mr.Biswas) and then traces his whole life in the most mesmerizing way. If there is a list of "10 masterful novels you have never read" then this should be number 1.

Zeitlose Darstellung eines unerfüllten Lebens zugunsten des kapitalistischen Systems. Bloyé erkennt zu spät, dass Errungenschaften nicht “seine” Errungenschaften waren, sondern die Errungenschaften von Gesellschaftern, Aktionären, Chefs.
„Doch sie fühlten, dass ihnen diese Heldentaten nicht gehörten […] Es waren Taten, die lediglich in zusammengeschnürten staubigen Akten eingetragen waren, die nur die weiteren Gewinne der Fabriken und Gesellschaften und die Gefügigkeit der Arbeiter, die für sie arbeiteten, gewährleistet hatten.“ (S.255)
