“Resistant,” Reluctant,” and now “Resilient” is the third book concluding Ryan T. Petty’s post-apocalyptic trilogy. The book begins just after the explosive ending in the second book, and now Jennifer, the young woman who holds the cure for the SA8 virus, faces a new adversary. This time, Petty introduces the reader to “The Leaders,” those who created the virus in hopes of manufacturing a new society, one whose members could be controlled. But before the main protagonists are revealed, Jennifer and her friends must endure a daring and pivotal escape from the compound. At Jennifer’s side is the regular cast of characters: Michael, Clarissa, Dr. Swanson, Dr. Wellstone, Montgomery and others. This crucial emergence from their underground prison leads them on a new journey to a new location—Mammoth Cave, where those who have been resisting are bunkered down within the caves, waiting and planning.

The journey, like always, is one of many and filled with fast-paced action Petty has made his staple. The group encounters new threats, new violence, and Petty shocks the reader when certain longtime characters fall by the wayside. Petty’s books are hard to put down. His writing is equally fast-paced, capturing the reader’s constant attention and eliciting a page-turning whirlwind.

Reaching Mammoth Cave, Petty introduces new characters, mainly, Jennifer’s parents. This is a central moment in the book, one that fills in the blanks of Jennifer’s life story. Through Jennifer’s bouts of returning memories, her life story and what happened to her are revealed. We then learn how the virus came about, why, and by whom. Once settled in Mammoth Cave, Jennifer’s blood is used to create an antidote. The mission now is to cure as many of the infected as possible in hopes of fighting the Selectees and their creators, the Leaders.

Yet the book is not just fast-paced action. Through the characters’ philosophical dialog, Petty expertly mirrors the possibility that the futuristic society destroyed in the story was our own. He argues that the radical sides of opposing viewpoints ultimately led to chaos and anarchy, which led to destruction. Underlying symbolism is another of Petty’s remarkable assets.

After wins and losses, the group, now having gained new, colorful characters come face to face with the Leaders, who will stop at nothing to obtain Jennifer’s blood. The dreadful Leaders have more to their arsenal than originally assumed, something that’s been uniquely absent from this futuristic saga—the nuke. Jennifer, a character well worthy of the book’s title, must now face one final obstacle to prove her resilience.

“Resilient” is the perfect conclusion to a well-applauded trilogy. The cover displays a discarded gas mask, a symbol of the main character’s ultimate accomplishment. Petty’s trilogy is a must for all readers, young and adult. Its message is clear, the state of things and where they are headed.

This series has been full of intense chases and epic fights, last minute rescues and impossible situations, and every minute has been a blast. I am sad that this story has ended, but it was a perfect ending.
