A book that transports me to decades past and never ceases to delight. A 1981 Christmas gift, I have read The Hobyahs many times. A nice little tale that always makes me smile. This edition of The Hobyahs, published in 1977, is a treasure, one of my favorite remnants of childhood.
Have you ever heard of Hobyahs? If not, you'll have to read this book (if you can find a copy) to learn why there are no Hobyahs today :-) This delightful story features an old man, an old woman, a little girl, some Hobyahs, some turnips and a dog called "Little Dog Turpie." Great for reading out loud.
Favorite Passages: "HOBYAH! HOBYAH! HOBYAH! Tear Down the Turnip House! Chase off the old man! Chase off the old woman! Put the little girl in the Hobyah bag!" _______
"LOOK ME! LOOK ME! LOOK ME!" _______
But Little Dog Turpie wriggled and thumped, and bounced and bumped, and jumped right out of the turnip box. _______
"With my scissors I snip, with my scissors I snap!"
Although out of print and small in size, this is a great read aloud or tell aloud for Halloween for preschoolers. You can make this less scary by making the hobyah sounds varied and funny sounding. I prefer this version featuring little dog Turpie to the San Soucci version, although it is a larger book with better pictures.
