Be careful who you bring in to your home. Not everyone is who you think they are. After a solar flare takes down a large section of the American power grid, Allison opens her doors to friends and neighbors in order to build a sustainable community. But, not everyone who claims to be her friend is one. Looking for a strong woman to take on the Apocalypse? Give Allison a try.
I love this series in audiobook. After a solar flare knocks out power in parts of America, Allison and her husband James open up their farm to take if family and friends and to build up a community. There are cold-hearted killers on the loose who are hungry and looking to steal. The narration was perfect; the story was exciting and interesting with the author teaching about herbs and tinctures to improve health. Allison brought in neighbours who had skills to share, and they taught the children to add normalcy to the long days of manual labour for all. I was disappointed in Allison's ambivalence to Riley; he worked tirelessly to make sure she was protected and everyone stayed safe from harm. Maybe the next book will capture this relationship and bring new information to light.
Shows a lot of common sense reactions to a realistic situation rather than the total apocalypse themes of other EMP type books. I stopped reading those after the second one. They all play on a common package of someone looking for their relatives of friends or trying to get to their mountain/country prep site.
Believable characters with a range of skills as well as regular working hands to pitch in. No extreme violence and combat action but rather a commonsense security system.
I loved the first book and was anticipating to be just as good. It had me all up into it until the chapter where Kim shot James . It went to Allison being in shock over his death, then the funeral. Nothing was ever said what they did with Kim. I gathered the guys that went upstairs must have shot her or they took her to Phil's. But not another word was spoken about her. I didn't care for her, but what happened! Your remarks about herbs was interesting but a bit much!
I liked the practical,no nonsense writing style. Both books give a great deal of prepper info without being preachy. Highly recommend everyone read. It is interesting because it is not a human caused conflict or illness causing the problem. It is still a incident that is viable and would be likely. Best is how to survive in this scenario. Then the frosting....everything in the back on the herbs and recipes are invaluable as a reference.
I have really enjoyed reading this series. It is a softer apocalyptic story but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fast paced or interesting. I enjoy the character development and information provided. These stories focus more on how people are surviving and thriving while working together rather then just a story of battle after battle. I look forward to the next book.
Continues where the first ends, the survivors start working together and created safe haven. But content and disruption comes from an old friend. Allison and friends have to adjust and finally set boundaries, but it comes at a cost. They learn more about the FEMA agents and not all or bad. but overall it was a very good, I enjoyed it. Learn some things on the herbs I did not know.
I enjoyed the easy flow writing style of this story - though it does need an edit. The solar flare has caused major disruption but Allison's organisational skills are proving a success. The new community seems to be thriving despite interference.
This instalment sees betrayal, however - will the group survive it?
Overall, this was an engaging story and I liked the dynamics and interesting information about herbs. The characters fit well into the plot.
Not everything could go right. Yes a couple unfortunate events but overall way too simple. People are more complicated. You cannot put a lot of people together in extreme circumstances and expect it to always go their way. Lots of loose ends so may be sequels in works. Easy read uncomplicated plot and characters. Wish it had more depth.
The story is not very well written. However, the i formation contained within the story makes the dog worth it.
I have a budding interest in hydrology now. I intend to seek out more information on the subject soon I would suggest that the author wrote a new book on the usefulness of herbs
The catastrophe that befell the world was very sad. However to me, just as sad is the way this book ended. I feel like I was just left hanging without a ending. There were so many things left unfinished. Perhaps most were unfinishable, but I think most were. Overall it was a pleasure to read otherwise.
I enjoyed this next installment of the series. The story seems to be progressing, with realistic scenarios. I will admit a few characters irritated me and the foreshadowing was very interesting. It will be interesting to see if what I think will happen next does happen. I also enjoyed the educational side of the book! Will definitely purchase the next book.
Enjoyed this book so much. It is filled with useful info just in case one should need it. Also critical should there be any kind of disaster. The characters were extremely developed. I do feel sorry for the people who have no knowledge of how to go about helping one another and instead resort to greed.
Interesting characters in a very difficult situation trying to survive. Sadly there is always death & destruction in this situation or someone who wants to ruin the family that has been created.
Love the book! It abruptly stops after the essential oil info. Seems like something is missing to finish the chapter. No teaser for book 3. No closure, cliffhanger, or ending to book 2.
Another great read. The story of Allison just flows smoothly, from the trials to the group's successful endeavors. Character evolvement has been stellar so far;can't wait to see more.
This book was a great read. It talked about her use of herbs and making butter and using the buttermilk to make biscuits. Then at the end of the book, it gave a listing of several useful herbs. It was very well laid out. Thank you!
I really feel like this book had a real life feel to what people might do or be like if this really happened...plus the mix of people and personality made it a great read. Keep them.coming..
This second book didn’t disappoint! It was a good read and just further shows how strong Allison’s character is. I laughed, cried, cringed, and cussed thru out the whole book. I would enjoy continuing this journey and I would recommend the series to you too.
As much as I enjoy the " TEOTWAWKI" genre, to me, certain important areas have been lacking. This series good those gaps. To me, knowing ones herbs is integral to survival.
I have always been a person who likes to be prepared. G few up in a time when we had a pantry and food to get by for a while, without running to the store. Thank You for the description of herbs and their uses...
The story was very good. I had trouble putting it down. I love the characters. The way thing s were organized was very inspiring. It was difficult to read about her husband 's death.
Join Allison and family as they do everything they can to protect and build a community following a terrible disaster. This is a great story and also educational. There is a good herbalist’s summary in the back as a bonus.
I really enjoyed this book, but what a shocker, I was not expecting that! This was an incredibly sad and moving book, but can't wait to find out whats next. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Liked the book sure didn't see what happens my concern was the book just stopped will there be a book 3 I sure hope so I want to know why Allison has it in for Riley. And see how everyone fairs in the next book
A good book and the parts in the herbs and how to use them were interesting, hope there's another book coming, because this one left a lot up in the air.
