USA TODAY Bestselling author CHRISTI CALDWELL blames Judith McNaught's "Whitney, My Love!" for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and pick up her laptop to try her hand at romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before crafting them a well deserved happily ever after!

Christi makes her home in Charlotte, North Carolina where she spends her time writing her own enchanting historical romances, and baking surprisingly good cakes (almost 2 years in lockdown will do that) with her courageous son and twin daughters, each who with their daily antics provides limitless source material.

An almost (teen-agedly) adamant rebel and a long suffering, (very) badly treated by life h.
All the usual Caldwell kernels are here and it's a 3* rounded up. Looking back I'd say it's not a bad story or book per se but while reading, I got frustrated many a time.

CC always does these good angst-filled plots but at the same time, the contrived and heaped up angst annoys rather than evoke sympathy (at least from me).
This h, too has been put through hell and back, and then each and every page is leaching with hints and memories of sadness past. So much so that I had to grit and to carry on. I love angst, but only when it flies effortlessly from the page into my heart and I am left to sense it for myself rather than being force-fed shovelfuls of whens and thens, rather than the actual hows and whats.
The kid is great and is realistic, just as the little suspense made sense at the end. The romance/h-H connection is average.

Graham and Martha

No one ruins a life like Chester, Viscount Waters. The heinous viscount didn’t just savage the lives of our beloved Barrett family. He had the unmitigated gall to take his lascivious brutality on the road. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Martha Donaldson and her son, Frederick, are eking out a meager existence in the country in the aftermath of the events of THE SPY WHO SEDUCED HER. Lord Graham Whitworth is sent by The Brethren to check on their well-being. Danger and romance ensue.

Christi Caldwell in this story explores themes that involve the pettiness and small mindedness of people in high and low places. The internal struggles with self worth and self esteem of the main characters was heartbreaking. Both characters struggled against internal feelings that defined their dealings with one another. They were both beaten down by others for circumstances they had no control over.

The plot was driven by hidden antagonists. Because there were so many forces acting independently, you never knew from whence the next strike would emerge. Martha’s inability to trust was very believable. Having lived a life rooted in a lie and maintained by cruelty and violence, she earned her suspicious nature. Graham’s redemption was satisfying—he appeared to be a half hearted rake at best and well on his way to redemption prior to meeting Martha, in my opinion.

I read this story in one sitting. I could not put it down. Another winner from Christi Caldwell!

It's now clear to me that I like Christi Caldwell best when she's serving me angst.

I've been trying to read a few of her more higher rated books on GR and can't seem to soldier on - too fluffy for me, nothing wrong with that, just not for me, as I tend to zone out. But My Lady of Deception? I'll have 5 of those, thank you.

The Rogue Who Rescued Her has similar angst (although nothing can compare to MLOD). In fact, I didn't feel so much as angst than sadness. I felt sad for the hero and the heroine. Yes, I felt for the rogue who wasn't too good at school and wanted daddy's approval. That first scene had me and I was in for the whole story. I did skim the Brethren stuff so the mystery behind some of the attacks, I can't really say what it was about. Something about legislation.

I also liked Marti's kid, Frederick. I liked that he wasn't a perfect, precocious kid. I like them sometimes for their comedic one-liners but they are sometimes too understanding to be believable as kids.

Frederick was a bit of an ass, but a realistic portrayal of a 10 year old who had to grow up, while still immature. Unconsciously using "Mother" instead of "mama" when he was not feeling happy towards his mom, also blaming her that they are all by themselves whey they had an argument.

And of course Marti. If you are not in the mood to feel bad, do not read this book.

The feeling bad is not so much angst or misunderstanding, as it is about Marti, Graham, and Frederick enjoying time together. There is sweetness in here in how Graham is so good with Frederick, and how respectful he is for Marti. There are some cozy moments here. Only one sex scene, I believe.

The ending was a bit abrupt - I would have liked to see Marti interact with

Two Souls Rescued, Two Hearts Won ❤️🌹❤️

Graham Whitworth, third son of the Duke of Sutton, has strived all his life for his father’s love and approval, to no avail. His expectations have always been too high, and no matter what, Graham comes up short. So eventually he ceases to try and chooses the path of rogue, finding his pleasure where he may and trying to ignore the underlying guilt and failures. Now, unbeknownst to his parents, he has been selected and trained to serve as an agent to the Crown.

When Miss Martha Donaldson, a spirited beauty with crimson hair and flashing eyes, becomes his first assignment, he is immediately intrigued and soon discovers the many complications and distractions she will present to his mission. His life is about to be altered in ways he’s never imagined.

My heart cries for Martha Donaldson. If ever a heroine needs and deserves a HEA, it is this wary and hurting young woman who has been through a personal hell of abuse and ruination through no fault of her own. But relying upon her love for her children, her spirit and resolve, she will do all in her power to survive and protect her own. There’s no wonder Graham immediately sees that she is different from any other, and soon she becomes much more than an assignment.

This newest release by Christi Caldwell has it all, from spies, kidnapping and attempted blackmail to bigamy, secrets, scandal and love. Her talent never ceases to amaze. With the creation of her wonderful characters, we see the imperfections and unique qualities that truly make them believable and remarkable. They remain alive in our minds (and yes, our hearts) long after the final page. I couldn’t get enough of these characters and can’t wait to see what’s next.

So Good

The Rogue who Rescued Her is Book 3 in The Brethren, however, can be read as a stand alone. Martha was duped as a young girl into marriage by the most vile Viscount Waters. The problem was he was already married. Her father seeks revenge and murders him. The Brethren vowed to help her, but she lost everything including her young daughters. Her only solace is her son. Typical of a woman and mother, she takes the blame for all of it. Graham is a Rogue. He cultivates this title as a way to show the world and his father, The Duke of Sutton, he doesn’t care about them thinking he fails at everything. Finally he has an assignment for the Brethren and Martha Donaldson and her son are his way up in the organization. But together they find that they are both worthy of a better life. Truly a beautiful story!

He’s chomping at the bit to for his first assignment for The Brethren, that secret organization within the Home Office. He is none to happy when that assignment is guarding a woman and her son so he’s counting the days until this “easy” assignment is over. He doesn’t count on the job meaning more.
She’s vowed never to trust another man after being made into a scandal that threatens her children. Even the handsome stranger who stands up for her in town then seeks the position of hired help. The question she asks herself is why she let him stay.
Christi Caldwell writes a beautiful, heart wrenching tale of two beaten souls and how they may just find there is good in the world after all.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I certainly would.
This was an amazing book. Martha and Graham, and their story will stay with me forever. It's a real testament of how two people, meant for each other, and help each other, will always overcome.

This book was okay, but I've really come to expect more from this author. Most of her books are able to be read without having to read other books in a series first. This one really suffers from expecting the reader to know more than they are told in this book alone. We never find out why Viscount Waters ended up in the area to begin with. The daughters are referred to, but we don't meet them at all. If they Brethren dropped the ball on making sure Martha was taken care of, who was paying the tuition for the girls' school? It really is sloppy for her.

Before I write my review, let me just give all other potential readers a heads up. You should read this book first and then "Home for the Holidays" (found in the anthology "Tis the Season by Jennifer Ashley) before reading "A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart" (the second book in The Heart of a Scandal series) since the two aforementioned are really the prequels and/or companions to "A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart". If you read the three books in that order, you won't get lost. Now to my review of this book.
The Rogue Who Rescued Her, Book 3 in The Brethren series, was about Lord Sheldon Graham Whitworth, third son to the Duke of Sutton, and Mrs. Martha "Marti" Donaldson, the widow of the late Lord Barrett, Viscount Waters.
Graham lived most of his life as an afterthought to his family. He tried everything he could to gain the approval of his father, to no avail, until one day, he just stopped trying and decided to go rogue, living for only what pleased him and no one else.
Leaving his family home where his mother was beginning her yearly holiday house party and after yet another diatribe from his father, Graham hurried to the meeting to which he was urgently called from the Home Office. As far as his father knew, Graham had been rejected when he had applied for a position within the Home Office. However, that was not, in fact, true. He just couldn't, nor did he even want, to tell him he had been accepted in the Brethren. It was part of his disguise, to continue with the act of a rogue.
Assigned to spend 14 days acting as a stable master while he ferreted out any and all information regarding Marti and her son, Frederick, Graham was outraged. His first assignment as an agent with the Brethren...to act as a servant watching a widow and her son, to make certain all was well with them? While he felt there was more to it, he was given no further information.
Many things happened the moment Graham met Marti, the first of which was an attraction that drew them both together of its own volition. Graham could tell there were many secrets surrounding Marti and her son, Frederick...secrets she was unwilling to discuss. However, he could also see that there was a great deal of distrust in her and he had to figure out how to win her over in order to complete his task for the Home Office.
Marti didn't trust anyone...except her son. Having been betrayed by every man she had ever known, she was wary around not only strangers but even the men and women she had known all her life. Due to the scandal that erupted before and after the death of her husband, Marti had been forced to send her 11-year-old twin daughters away in order to protect them from further ruin, tearing her heart in two at the loss of her children.
Working as Marti's stable master, he slowly began to learn about her and some of the secrets she kept hidden. The longer he stayed, the deeper the chemistry between them became, making it difficult to avoid the intimacy they both craved. Yet, he had to if he were to be capable of leaving when the time drew near.
When circumstances changed and Marti learned Graham's true identity, she tossed him out of her home. After he left, Marti and Frederick's safety became so precarious she dared not to sleep in fear of harm coming to her son...or herself.
There were so many twists and turns in this book that it was difficult to put down. Oh, there was angst, drama, intrigue, and humor in abundance. But there was also betrayal, fear, and hatred as well with many of the characters. Reading this story, you just don't have a clue as to who is the villain/ness and who the good guys are. The surprises this story incorporated were nearly overwhelming...in a good way though.
The storyline was well-developed and the characters fleshed out to the point they almost leaped off the pages into real life. This book definitely earned a five-star rating and will have a place with the other Keeper for the Shelves collection.

In this 3rd entry into The Brethren series we see a different kind of agent. Lord Sheldon Graham Malin Whitworth wasn't exactly their usual recruit. This 3rd son of a Duke was better at working with horses than being a peer. He had tried to become a member of the Brethren and was initially rejected. Now, his first assignment seems to be more babysitting that secret agent. He is to spend 2 weeks acting as the horse master to a woman and her son.
Ms Caldwell does an amazing job at making the characters realistic. The ten year old Frederick swings from playful boy, to resentful pre-teen, to man of the house. His mother Martha is struggling to keep her family safe but the locals don't take kindly to bigamist in their midst.
What starts out to be just a check in to make sure Martha and Frederick are doing okay, turns into much more when it becomes obvious that they are in danger. In addition to providing protection, Graham provides a male role model for Frederick and some loving companionship for Martha.
The danger is real and once they all come to London everything reaches the boiling point.
If you want a book where you can laugh and cry and love every minute of it - this is the book for you. Christi Caldwell is the master of characters and emotions and providing amazing Happily Ever Afters.

Lord Waters is a horrible man...a bigamist who has ruined an entire family and left his "fake" wife to be abused by an entire village. Martha was just a child when her father encouraged her to marry, and through all the horrors of being married to that pig(who her father eventually kills), she has persevered, raising her son, sending her daughters to school, trying to keep a roof over their heads...but it's all becoming too much. The Brethren send in Lord Sheldon, fondly known as Graham to us, to reconnoiter the situation. Graham has been labeled a failure. I'm thinking he's a bit learning disabled, but quite a charmer and an incredible horse master. He arrives on the scene and witnesses the abuse of Martha and her son...and then witnesses her strength. They are both lost...but as the story progresses, they both find a home. I think you'll very much enjoy this wonderful story. I truly love both the hero and heroine in this story...as quite frankly, they both save each other! Another incredible tale by Christi Caldwell.

The Rogue who Rescued her was another emotional read from Christi Caldwell! Marthe was a woman who had big dreams outside her small town upbringing. When she was promised the world, she jumped at the chance only to have her life ruined by a vile Viscount.

Marthe was a character you meet in passing in another story, I honestly didn't give much thought to her and was not overly excited to read her story. Christ, of course, proved me wrong and I really enjoyed this story of a Women who have lost faith in everything, finally finds a reason to live and love again.

Marthe was so broken by her "marriage" and subsequent shame that came when the truth was revealed. When we meet her she has given up on everything and just barely hanging on believing everyone has abandoned her. Her story is heartbreaking and you feel for the cruelty life has thrown her way.

Graham's life has just been a footnote. He has been judged worthless by so many that he just lives with no real purpose. When he gets a chance to prove himself, he jumps at it and it leads him, Marthe. It is in is two weeks with Marthe that he learns his true value and he begins to want things he long thought were beyond his reach.

These two lost souls start to find healing and love for the first time in their life. It's great to watch the transformations in their lives as they begin to let the walls around their heart, however, the road to happiness is often bumpy. Graham's secrets may just tear apart these two before they can get together.

The Rogue Who Rescued Her by Christi Caldwell
The Brethren Series Book Three
Lord Sheldon Graham Malin Whitworth was a rogue. As the third son, he was of no use to his father...a duke. More of an embarrassment. What his father didn't know was that the Brethren had accepted him. His first mission...to check up on a woman and her child. So far from what Graham would consider a mission.

Martha Donaldson didn't care that her late husband was dead. But it was in the wake of his death that her life changed. Her father was imprisoned. All their fortune removed. And the town had turned against her and her boy. And she trusted no one...until Graham Malin came to help out as a stable master.

In The Spy Who Seduced Me, the reader learns of Martha's husband's death. Now, with changes in the Brethren leadership, she's been forgotten and left on her own. Once again, awesome characters and a storyline that kept me turning the pages.

THE QUALITY OF NOBILITY

In each of Christi Caldwell 's novels, there are the over riding themes - love, of course, often including not only romance, but also a he love of a parent for a child, and of a child for a parent. Of course, there are villains, and heroes.
There also tend to be less transparently obvious themes: what constitutes villainy? What is a hero? How far can a man or woman sink before society seems them irreparably bad? Is that truly where people bottom out, or can society be mistaken?
And this time, I found myself thinking about the quality of nobility.
What makes a person noble?
Is it birth, rearing, experience, education?
Or, is nobility a quality inherent in a person?
This is a story of nobility in spirit, and how that can build a person, once all else is stripped away.
It is easy to read, and it would be easy to just see the love stories. It would be better to see the depth of the personalities and how they are destined to intertwine.

The Rogue who Rescued Her

Another fantastic book by the queen of Regency Christi Caldwell. This tells the story how two lost souls come together and heal each other. Graham the rakish third son of a Duke who is trying desperately to prove his worth and find purpose to his life is send to High Town on his first assignment with the Bretheren. Martha the woman who the Bretheren abandoned & left to fend for herself. Together they find through their shared pain and secrets a love so deep that it’s worth fighting all for. This story will make you laugh, cry, scream and fill you with the belief that love always finds a way, even when you feel you don’t deserve it. We catch up with some old characters and see they are happy and well. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you are looking to get into regency or an avid reader like myself, Christi always delivers stories with characters who are real and you can’t help root for.

4.5 stars-I really enjoyed this book! It is classic Christi Caldwell at her finest.

I liked both Graham and Martha’s characters and their relationship development. I bought into these two as a couple. It did take a while for them to meet-38 pages-so there’s a lot of backstory at the beginning. I wish they met and started to bond sooner. Like I expressed, the relationship between them is easy. Neither character really fights the attraction and they are easy together. I loved Graham’s willingness too accept Martha’s family. It was nice to see Martha’s story as well; I remember feeling so bad for her situation when we first met her.

I do wish there had been more to the ending, only because I was enjoying the book so much and then-poof! It was over. I wish we had met Martha’s daughters and their introduction to Graham. I wish we could see Graham bring Martha home to his family and earn the approval from his parents and brother.

Fantastic!

Another fantastic read from Christi Caldwell. This is the third in The Brethren series, but while it picks up on the aftermath of events in the first book in the series, The Spy Who Seduced Her, it can certainly stand alone.

I found both the hero and heroine very easy to relate to - the hero actually reminds me somewhat of my own son, and the heroine is a mother trying to do what is best for her children. I also loved Frederick, the heroine’s son - a definite hero in the making!

The story is well paced, and has both lighthearted moments and darker twists. And, after a somewhat dramatic scene towards the end of the book, I can’t wait to see where The Brethren world is going to go next!

Another Excellent Story by Mrs. Caldwell

Graham, a Dukes son, can't seem to do anything right in his Father's eyes. It leaves him feeling like a failure.
Martha has had a horrid life because of a big mistake her Father made. He had her marry a man old enough to be her Father who also happened to be a rapist and a wife beater.
Later on, Martha's two daughters were sent away for their safety. This left only her son Frederick and herself. This poor young man had a rough life and suffered more than any child should have to endure.
Eventually the Brethren sent Graham to help her and her son.
I could not put this book down. Be sure when you read this you have lots of tissues handy. I recommend this book.

Remarkable Read!

The Rogue Who Rescued Her, book 3 of Christi Caldwell’s Brethren series is a truly delightful story of a young agent Lord Sheldon Graham Malin Whitworth, on his first assignment for the Crown, one he doesn’t want, watching over a young widow and her son. In the first few chapters I didn’t much care for Graham, as he prefers to be called, but shortly thereafter I was as much in love with him as the heroine, spunky and courageous Martha Donaldson and her son Freddie. He may have rescued her as the story develops, but in all truth, she rescues him, and helps him to find himself and the true man the he always had the potential to be. Another hit from this remarkable storyteller!

I'm enjoying The Brethren books a lot. Anyone of Christine's books are dive into and you only come up for air when the book is completed. Mind you, having chocolate, a glass of wine, some fruit, you know the essentials at hand and voila, you are on a reading marathon. The outside world is non-existent. The Rogue Who Rescued Her was a great read continuing from the previous story where that dastardly Waters, you know, the bigamist slime bucket bastard who is burning, roasting in hell for the crimes he committed to his family and his second family. Great story line, filled with mistrust, hurt, pain and of course, redemption and faith, love conquers all. A solid 4.5/5.

This is my first book by the author, and I was sorely disappointed. I was hoping to find an exciting new writer in the historical romance genre. Although the writing was well done, the characters were grumpy, moody and unpleasant. Our hero is in a constant state of angry “victim mode”, still dealing with the emotional trauma of his childhood learning disabilities. Our heroine is in sad victim, mode, living in a village where everyone hates her and treats her like less than dirt. This was a real downer of a romance novel. I had to skim the last quarter of the book just to be put out of my misery.

Saved

I love Christi Cadwell's stories. This the third book in the Series and I just can't get enough. My favorite most of is you meet her characters throughout all of her books. I just love that each of her characters have a story to tell. I would start with book 1 in the series. I do not like spoilers so when I post my review it is based on how much I liked the book! Meeting Graham and Martha you are cheering for them because they both need to be saved and love with patience makes the best book!!!!

Great book. Fast read. Page turner. BUT

But good grief, you write an awesome story and then that is the best ending you could come up with? No meeting family, no reunion with the twins? Sorry, ten years ago I would have thrown my book across the room, but you don't throw your kindle. Next time, finish the fish farm book! Too many things left hanging out there

Brethren books take on a different tone to tge standard "romantic upper class" fare that Caldwell often focuses on. This was not the most satisfactory, the ending seemed hasty and although it concluded the tale, it felt like the family's story was really only just beginning.
Maybe I'm just a bit jaded, but it felt a tad flat, in spite of the details included about country life.

Another very good and enjoyable story from Christi. I really like Graham as a character. I didn’t give it 5 stars because I wasn’t completely sure why Marti is kidnapped towards the end and I wanted to see her reunited with her daughters. A good read though.
