ONLY THE FORCE OF A HURRICANE COULD BRING THESE TWO RIVALS TOGETHER...
As the director of the Port Provident Animal Shelter, Becca Collins had devoted her life to helping the furriest residents of Port Provident. When a special Labrador retriever needs her help on the eve of Hurricane Hope, Becca can't say no--even if it means she'll have to ride out the hurricane on Provident Island. She doesn't have the supplies to properly take care of a geriatric dog with specific medical needs, but she knows who does--her greatest opposition for a new town animal shelter, local veterinarian Dr. Ross Reeder. With the storm looming only hours away, Becca has no other choice but to show up on his doorstep, throwing a wrench into Ross' plans to evacuate himself and his combat-weary former Army dog.
Ross and Becca are used to disagreeing with one another, but they soon realize the only way they're going to survive the wrath of Hurricane Hope is to put their differences aside and work for the good of the animals who depend totally on them. As they discover they have more in common than they thought, they work to rebuild the Texas beach town where they've both put down roots. But then Becca learns secrets about her past that threaten to change the whole direction of her life.
As she struggles with love, faith, and lies, will she still need the shelter she's found in Ross' arms or will the aftermath of the storm take away everything they've worked to build?

There is nothing Becca won’t do for the shelter she manages and the animals they serve even if it means staying behind with a hurricane fast approaching. Being stranded by herself would be difficult enough but being stranded with her nemesis was a complication she wasn’t expecting.
Ross is one of the Veterinarians at the shelter and he is responsible for ensuring its ongoing viability which causes the sparks to fly between him and Becca. When they find themselves stranded, they may just realize they make a better team than adversaries.
reading shelter from the storm was the best decision i made this year… it’s a story of two rivals, who ends up working in the same place, and at the wrong timing, bc they stay together in a shelter of animals during a storm, to protect them, the shelter and the animals… a long misunderstanding that they had before, that made them rivals. they talk it out in those days, clear everything up between them and they become friends… after the storm ends, and the shelter was protected very well, Becca realizes how much she misunderstood Ross, and Ross realized after the storm that he loved Becca… they take some time to also talk it out, and figure their relationship together… they get into a complicated relationship, let’s say that. and a lot of things happened that made their complicated relationship gets stronger, and what i liked more abt it was there was communication between them, like they always talk it out, figures what’s wrong, to solve the problem they have. after all, what i learned from this book; always communicate your thoughts and emotions, let the other person explains everything before u misunderstand.
This is an engaging clean, Christian romance and the start of Ms. Ethridge’s new series titled Port Providence. The story centers around Becca Collins and Ross Reader. Becca is the director of the town’s animal shelter and Ross is the veterinarian and president of the board of directors of the shelter. These two have locked horns more than once and neither is the other’s favorite person. But hurricane Hope and a Lab retriever that can’t evacuate with his family, end up bonding Becca and Ross. A friendship and maybe more begins to develop. When Becca is starting to consider God as well as the importance of hope and love, someone from her past invades her present. Will that force cause Becca to lose her faith and Ross or will she find her HEA? Kudos to the author for reminding us that the military dogs are as much vets as the humans and also can suffer from PTSD. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Becca was only a couple of steps away from the bus to flee Port Provident before Hurricane Hope came to the island. Then she heard her name called and saw the beautiful older Lab named Polly. The teenager had her Grandma's sweet pet in hand looking for Becca to take cake of the dog for them. Becca just couldn't say "No" even though she has never been in a hurricane before . Becca is now stuck and no longer has a chance to leave town as her car would never make it. In spite of the story being fiction , one of the cool things about this story is that the hurricane was a true event which took place in Galveston.
Following the storm, much of the buildings have either been destroyed or severely damaged. This is primarily a book about love, both human and divine. But there is obviously much more for you to discover within its pages. It's worth your time to read!
Overall this was a very enjoyable, emotional book full of ups and downs and tough situations that ultimately lead to love - between and a man and a woman, but also between that woman and God. It was more down to earth than a lot of Christian romances I’ve read, which was nice, and not preachy at all. The characters lived what they believed which was far more impacting. My only slight issue, is that the male character, who is a Christian before the story begins, allows himself to date and kiss a woman who is clearly not a Christian. I know there are various opinions on “evangelism dating” but I’ve seen firsthand how dangerous that path can be and I feel it is best, even in fiction, to not encourage Christians to have romantic feelings for those who are unsaved since the Bible is clear about not marrying those who are unsaved. Other than that, it was a great read!
– Ross is a war veteran as is his dog and both have a bit of PTSD during the storm
– Becca was not well cared for by her druggy mother and her mother’s boyfriends for the few years she was with her. This causes some PTSD for things that she encounters during and after the storm
Review:
I loved Becca and Ross! They both have such big hearts, especially for their furry friends 🐕🐈.
Becca is the director of the Animal Shelter in Port Provident. The residents of Port Provident have been told they should evacuate the island since Hurricane Hope was on its way to them. Becca was on her way to leaving after sending her furry residents on ahead of her, but her plans get sidetracked. Two residents trying to escape the store are told they can’t bring their dog with them on the public transport, but they also can’t stay with the health of one not doing well. Becca steps up to stay and care for their dog, but notices that she doesn’t have enough of the prescription dog food to last through the storm. She begrudgingly realizes that she’ll have to try and see if her least favorite person is still in town and has some more of the dog food.
Ross is Becca’s least favorite person, and she is his least favorite. But with Ross being the local veterinarian, she’s his best bet in finding the right food for this dog.
Ross happens to still be on the island with his dog and was just about to leave when Becca knocked on his door. He knew that Cookie (his dog) would not do well waiting it out inside the storm and was trying to prevent his dog from having stress. But as he gets Becca the food she needs, they both find out that they are stuck on the island since they closed the bridge.
Throw in a few other problems and Ross offers for Becca and the dog she is caring for to stay with him. With no other option, Becca accepts. As they work together to care for their furry friends (and some others who make their way to them), they realize they have some things in common. And that they might like each other a bit more than they thought they did…
Finding the only true anchor in the storms of life
I can’t imagine living in a place that has to deal with flooding during hurricanes like this area of Texas does. Author Kristen Etheridge did a great job of helping me picture what it would be like. Shudder! With water covering the first story of buildings and all kinds of things in said water. I’m glad we only have to worry about potential wind damage here where I live!
Both Becca and Ross were passionate about caring for animals. Though they felt like they were always at odds with one another, it was due to their zeal. I felt like the author brought their relationship believably from animosity to attraction as they worked together to help the pets who had been abandoned.
Becca had a terrible childhood that had left her feeling rejected by God. As she saw Ross’ faith and the faith of one of the women of the community, she began to desire what they had. Without being preachy, the author showed the journey toward salvation that Becca took.
Becca is the Director of the Port Provident Animal Shelter. Dr Ross Reeder is the Island Veterinary and President of the Board for the Port Provident Animal Shelter. Becca and Ross have had their heated discussions, so they are not each other’s friend. Bring on Hurricane Hope and Becca giving up her place on the bus to evacuate to take a Grand Mother’s dog, Polly, so she would get on the bus. She has to go to Ross’s clinic hoping he was still there to get food for Polly. They decide to try to evacuate but can’t because the Hurricane came in faster than expected and the bridge to the mainland closed. Now they have to rely on each other to get through the storm. I really liked Becca, she’s a strong woman and has made it on her own despite her past. She is all in on caring for the animals. I also really liked Ross, as a Veteran he is set on helping Dogs that served in the various branches of the Armed Forces. The story is about love, compassion, hope and working together be it as a couple or Community. This is an Inspirational book, that can be read alone or as part of the series. This is a new author for me and I enjoyed the book and would read other in this series and by the author.
Becca Collins arrive on the island of Port Provident, Texas, ten years earlier, escaping from an abusive, drug addicted mother in Wisconsin. On the eve of Hurricane Hope hitting the island, she has evacuated all of the animals in the shelter she runs, and is ready to get on a bus out herself, when Polly, a geriatric dog with special dietary needs is left in her care. Resigned to riding out the storm, she heads to the office of her nemesis, Dr. Ross Reeder to find the food she needs to care for Polly. Ross is the local vet and chairman of the board of the shelter, and the two seem to be polar opposites. Ross was planning to leave town himself when Becca shows up, and before they can leave, the causeway to the mainland is closed. The two are forced into each other's company and discover each is more than they seem. They ride out the storm and the start of the rebuilding process together, which brings them closer, until her mom unexpectedly shows up. A master of manipulation, Darla moves in with Becca, who becomes more and more unhappy, until finally giving her the boot and reuniting with Ross to get their HEA.
2022 - 52 book challenge - # 15 A five syllable title.
The need for a better facility for housing animals in Port Provident, Texas makes enemies of the director of the funding source and the person running the shelter. Becca needs a lot of things upgraded and fixed in order to make a go of the animal shelter. Ross, one of the Port Provident veterinarians, says funding needs to be put on hold. They never see eye-to-eye! Then the hurricane hits and both are stranded on the island in a very dangerous spot. She cannot stay in her apartment due to the flooding that is in the forecast. She cannot go to the shelter for people deciding to ride out the storm because they will not accept animals. She has a dog that she took in for an elderly lady who was evacuating the island. They would not allow her to take her dog. Becca ends up with Polly, the dog, at Ross’s office looking for more of her special diet food. He misses the last call for getting off the island. So now, they get to endure it together! Will they make it through the storm? Will they make it through the aftermath? Good read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sweet story about surviving a hurricane, and dogs, and love. I live on the island this story is based on, and I lived here during the hurricane Kristen writes here, except my family evacuated, since it was our first Big hurricane after moving here. (I've known Kristen since she was in college and am so tickled about her books.) So even though she renamed everything, I know all the places she mentions and, man, it really takes me back to all the destruction we lived through in the immediate aftermath. The acres of trash piled 20 feet high. The excitement as each business reopened. The awful stink of the refrigerator we set out on the curb with all the contents still inside and the door taped shut. ANYWAY, the romance is adorable, mixed up with listening to the wind howl and taking care of island pets. The heroine has issues of abandonment. The hero is former military. I hadn't thought about veterinarians being in the army, but it makes sense. It's a good read and I liked it a lot. You should read it.
A hurricane is fast approaching the island of Port Provident and everyone is to evacuate. Becca Collins, who runs the animal shelter there and had all the animals taken to the mainland and is now ready to get on the last bus to leave the island. As Becca is always there for any animal in need, when she finds the line isn’t moving because an elderly lady isn’t allowed to take her special needs dog on the bus with her, Becca pulls out of line and told the lady she would take care of the dog. She checks to see what the lady left her and knows she doesn’t have enough food so stops by the vet’s office to get enough to tide her over. The vet is packed up ready to leave when she arrives. Might I also say these two argue tooth and nail over the need for a larger facility for the animal shelter. By that time, the only way off the island is closed. As they are thrown together to survive, can they learn to support each other and will she learn the power of prayer. A really good clean story.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to face a hurricane of the magnitude bearing down on Port Provident, but after reading Kristen Ethridge’s book Shelter in the Storm, I have a small sense of the helplessness storm victims must experience. From the first chapter, I was hooked. Animal shelter director, Becca Collins and island veterinarian and Army veteran, Dr. Ross Read are professionals who are at odds in the community, but a storm and animals in great need unite them with a common cause. I am a sucker for a great dog book and if you make that dog a Labrador retriever, well... I am a goner! This really was a sweet story, and I want to spend a little more time in Port Provident with Kristen’s characters. The complications of family and finding strength in community are strong themes within these chapters.
Kristen Ethridge, you have a new reader! Thank you!
Becca and Ross were always at odds when trying to handle the needs of the Port Provident Animal Shelter--he as president of the board and she as the shelter director. Their relationship was so contentious that they both dreaded it when they were thrown together taking care of animals left behind when Hurricane Hope came through their island. Little did they know that God was using their need to find shelter from the storm as a way to bring about a more lasting kind of shelter for both of them. I loved the storyline; it was a very creative twist on the tried-and-true enemies to lovers trope. And I loved the characters; very battle-hardened and in need of God's softening their hearts to what He was trying to give them. This is my second time to read this book--it's that kind of good. Highly recommend!
When Hurricane Hope hits Port Provident, Becca Collins, the local animal shelter's director is trapped with Dr. Ross Reeder weathering the storm together with some of the local pets that needed saving. These two have never gotten along but now they have to work together to save the animals that have been entrusted to them during this crisis. As they spend time together and get to know each other better, they learn that they each have qualities that the other likes and makes them want to get to know better. Will this only be driven by the crisis or will there still be interest when their worlds return to normal?
This is a very, sweet, clean wonderful story of romance, love and understanding. I loved reading their story and this story left me with all the good feels of a wonderful romance.
This book was okay. The hero and heroine's actions were believable and I found the community support heartwarming as everyone was rebuilding. I have survived a hurricane, although never one when I lived on the coast. I'm sure the storm surge is much more frightening than trees taking down power lines. In fact, I was in Daytona Beach last October, the week after they were hit. I was fortunate power and water were established the day before I arrived, but many places were still debris-filled and you could hear generators further back in the neighborhoods. Our heroine's past should have made her less gullible than she was, and I felt it took her rather a long time to put two and two together to get four.
This was a story about an animal shelter director and a veterinarian who find themselves riding out a hurricane to try to save several pets. Before they were stuck together in the storm, they thought that they disagreed on the approach to animal care. They do realize that they have common ground. I am not a big pet person, but I still really enjoyed this book. I think it helped me to understand how pets are affected during traumatic experiences. I liked the idea of finding new ways to support war service dogs. This story had some faith elements. Community was a strong element. I also liked the idea of listening to what love is - patient and kind, not self-seeking. This was the first book I read by this author, but I would be willing to read more.
If you’re looking for an inspiring, quick read, this is it! Shelter from the Storm features vulnerable yet strong, believable characters; a captivating, steadily flowing plot; vivid descriptions that put you at the scene and evoke the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of Hurricane Hope and its resulting devastation; and a meaningful faith message that reveals the true meaning of love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more books in the Port Provident: Hurricane Hope series. I received a complimentary copy of this book but am under no obligation to write a positive review.
Becca is the Director of the animal shelter on Port Provident. Ross is the local vet, the President of the Board for the shelter and a royal pain in Becca’s backside. When a series of events during Hurricane Hope places the two of them together, they must learn to overcome their past to survive.
What an excellent book! It has been some time since a story has moved me like this one did. I couldn’t put it down. I just had to know how it ended. I laughed and I cried as I read this heartwarming story of love. I think you will too. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a clean, heartwarming romance.
I normally am not interested in books involving hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. However, this cover caught my eye so I got it anyway and was so glad I did!! It was written in such a wonderful way that tells the whole story with enough detail to feel intense at first, but not so much you have hurricane related dreams at night.
I was new to this author and I will 100% be looking for more of her books after this. I ended up reading it almost in one day. I even found myself fitting it in during such odd times (while doing my hair, while cooking meals, and while vacuuming haha), I just couldn't put it down.
Be prepared to fall in love, and maybe have some happy tears, I know I sure did.
Becca's druggie mother never cared for her and she was raised by her grandmother in Wisconsin. Now Becca is running an animal shelter on Port Provident, Texas and battling with the president of the board of directors, a veterinarian. When a hurricane hits, Becca finds herself stranded with Dr. Ross Reeder, two dogs, some cats and other animals! They begin to see each other in a new light. I loved how a wealthy lady showed love to Becca and explains that God is love. I recommend Shelter from the Storm to others. I received a complimentary ebook from the author. This is my honest opinion.
This is a clean, sweet Christian romance and the first book in a new series.
Becca Collins and Ross Reader are not exactly each other's favorite person as she is the director of the town's animal shelter and he is the veterinarian and president of the shelter's board of directors. They tend to disagree about what is best for the shelter. Then Hurricane Hope arrives and the two are stuck in town with their animals and some that were left behind. As they spend time together caring for the animals and riding out the hurricane, a friendship is formed and seems to be developing into something more. They both face some obstacles after the storm that they each need to surmount to have a happy ending together.
Becca Collins is the director of the Port Provident Animal Shelter. She loves taking are of the pets that are left on her doorstep. Dr. Ross Reeder is an Army veteran and the town veterinarian extraordinaire. Dr. Ross is on the town council and always turning down Becca's requests for funding for remodeling or relocating. When Hurricane Hope threatens the small Texas town, the residents are forced to evacuate. Some do and some do not, but either way, the pets need help. Becca and Ross are forced to put aside their differences for the good of the town pets. What happens gives Becca new hope. A great book of love, faith, and hope!
I gave this book 5 stars, because this was a suspenseful Christian romance. This book is appropriate for high school aged and and older adults. Ross Reed and the female lead are at loggerheads over an animal shelter. A hurricane "Hope" makes them a team. He introduces her to the Bible. Diana, the Shelters benefactor tells her that love was the base of the Christian belief. Her Mother drops in. Mom drives a wedge between her daughter and Ross
Cute, clean story. Becca is a passionate person who has a heart for the animal shelter that she runs. Ross is the local veterinarian in town. They are constantly butting heads in meetings. A hurricane coming through town forces these two adversaries to join together and ride out the storm along with some furry companions. They have both misjudged each other and find themselves drawn to one another. They both have obstacles to hurdle. It felt like the story was a little rushed and could have had more details added to it but it was still an enjoyable read.
The bible crap was subtle at first, or I would have bailed straightaway. Then it piled on more and more and just pissed me off. Thankfully, it was a quick read. Most inexplicable of all is the fact I reached the end of the story (as in 100% done), yet the slider showed t showed I was only halfway through. Nope, not another saccharine attempt to prosthelytize through a bonus crappy romance, but THE SAME STORY OVER AGAIN.
