Jacaranda Magic is the stunning debut picture book from Brisbane-based copywriter and children’s author, Dannika Paterson. Drawing on a background in Child Psychology and a passion for early education, literacy and nature play, Paterson uses her talents to write quality literature for children that fosters and encourages creativity, imagination and exploration.
Superbly illustrated by twice CBCA Shortlisted illustrator Megan Forward, Jacaranda Magic spins the story of a dull summer’s day transformed into one filled with adventure and discovery through the power of imagination. Five bored children, unable to decide what to do with themselves, are lounging beneath a Jacaranda tree to escape the hot summer sun when a gust of wind sends a flurry of purple blossoms into the air, igniting their imaginations. Uncomplicated rhyme partners deliciously with Forward's sublime watercolour illustrations. The indescribable beauty of Jacaranda blooms, wafting lazily about on a spring breeze is captured neatly in this gentle exploration of imagination. Wild spirits are unleashed one day among a group of friends bereft of the usual contraptions of play: scooters, swings or smart devices, as Jacaranda blooms begin to rain upon them. A joyful example of overcoming boredom that encapsulates the capacity of nature to inspire, educate and entertain.

A beautiful picture book, about 5 children lying bored on a summer’s day under the Jacaranda Tree. Suddenly a wind springs up and showers them with Jacaranda blooms. Each child imagines something different and fun to do with the blooms and the tree, including things like using the tree as a rocket to the moon.

This book is BEAUTIFUL! Encouraging imaginative play under the shade of a tree that blooms just before summer holidays begin in Australia. It makes me remember the happiness of my childhood whilst encouraging me to get out in the yard and teach my children how to have fun away from technology. Definitely a family favourite!
