I sat at the desk in my Boston apartment, staring at the work I had out in front of me. Frustrated. Restless and heartbroken. So much was going on. I couldn't help but think, "Where's the furthest place I could drive to from here?" Turns out, the North Coast of Alaska... Sleeping on a wooden platform jammed into the trunk of my Subaru, my closest friend and I drove west, then north, and we didn't stop until we couldn't drive any more. Along the way we found many beautiful mountains to climb and discovered how the wilderness and our emotions push and pull our experiences. The result: an amazing adventure and a tug of war between the rawness and the romanticism of the wilderness.
I loved this quick read! It only me just a few hours and kept me very entertained throughout the entire adventurous story.
For someone who seems to have figured out how to manage his anxiety in a way that really works for him is inspiring.
So many people live with anxiety and depression that I really think having this book as an example can really help them figure out that they too need an outlet.
Maybe not something so drastic as a road trip from Vermont to Alaska, but to me? The point of this book is to give those suffering from anxiety and depression hope. Hope that if they find an outlet and what works for them, they may not have to live in constant darkness.
I WON this book in a Goodreads giveaway! And it was so cool because not only did they mail it to me but it was a signed copy and Ari, the author, included a thank you note! They gave ME a thank you note! Ha! So what a wonderful personal touch. I really like the cover design, and it's unusual to not have the title and author ON the cover. It's on the side, don't worry. I am not sure I will read his other books, but I was glad to read this one and enjoyed marking "quotables" from it as I went along. It was a much longer journey of travels and life in reality than it was a book to read, because I read it in two little settings! It's definitely thought-provoking and I've never climbed or spent much time in mountains, but I'm all about the outdoors and nature, and I understand at least some of that "mind" stuff he was conveying as well.
Thank you Goodreads and the author for this amazing book!! I was able to receive this book because of a giveaway and it was the best thing that I have ever won. Ari, the author actually signed the copy that I received as well as sent me a personal card inside. I will forever cherish these things. I, too, deal with depression and anxiety and this book puts so many things in perspective. I wish I could just jump into my car and just drive to somewhere. Get out of my comfort zone and away from the hustle and bustle of life. No responsibility, no nothing. Just nature and the heavens. Do things that I normally would not do but have always wanted to do. This book was truly an inspiration to me and I hope to many more.
Good read for those who enjoy a story about travels (or mountain climbing). Very relatable narrartor - left me wishing to hear more stories of his travels and journey with anxiety.
I wish I could do what these to young men did to exercise the heartache from their mind and body. To be able to climb a tall rock face, to challenge your self beyond your norm and just push yourself to see what you are made of, to know that if you can survive this climb you can survive anything. To keep challenging yourself at each new place you arrive at it makes you have a whole new lease on life. I think it was cathartic for the two young men after each of them experience a tough breakup before their last year of college whom they thought was the love of their lifes. How on some climbs they experience the beauty and the power of mother nature at her best and at her worst. Something they will never forget and years later recall it back in their minds like the day it happened. Mother nature teaches them you are not always in charge and learn to live your life to the fullest. Life has a way of being in charge over your best plans and has so much more in store for them than what they can imagine. I don't know much about rock climbing but if you like it you will even connect more with this story and know what these two felt at the end of each climb they made. They seem to me it made them a better more confident person from it and mentally stronger to be able to handle what life throws at them.
