çok güzel kurgulanmış, konusu güzel, su gibi akıp giden ve diliyle gerçekten basitliğin lezzetini fark ettiren bir roman okumak ister misiniz… buyrun o zaman. ressam ve şair ebeveyn, vaftiz baba sample beckett, paris ve abd’de yaşamak… alba arikha epey şanslı bir yazar. ama genelde böyle ailelerin çocukları tırt olur (sorry, not sorry), alba hanım öyle değil.
ikinci dünya savaşı öncesi paris’te yahudi bir ailenin kızı flore’nin ilk aşkıyla başlıyor roman. flore’nin şimdiki zamanla anlattıkları- sonra öğreneceğimiz üzere deftere yazdıkları o kadar basit ve sade ki, bayıldım. tüm trajedisine rağmen…
diğer anlatıcı flore’den 50 yaş kadar küçük ingiliz hannah. hannah ve flore bir biçimde notting hill’de komşu oluyorlar ve tesadüflerle bağlanıyorlar. hannah da kendi ailesini, yaşadıklarını anlatıyor kendi bölümlerinde ama dili flore’den farklı. yine samimi ve doğrudan ama deftere yazılmadığı, günlük olmadığı için olsa gerek o dil farkını çok iyi yakalamış alba arikha.
paris’ten filistin’e, yeni kurulan israil’deki bombalamadan ingiltere’ye, yanlış seçimlerden, yanlış aşklardan doğrusuna, saklananlardan apaçık yaşananlara bir hayat. flore’yi doğrusu yanlışıyla o kadar iyi anlıyoruz ki ben cidden böyle yanlışlar yapan birini bu kadar anladığımı hatırlamıyorum.
daha uzun yazacağım ama “eğer beni ararsan” e.temelkuran’ın ilk romanlarında yapmaya çalışıp da yapamadığını (okuyanlar anlar) mükemmel yapmış bir roman. yani zor olmayan, hikayesi iyi olan, akıp giden ve edebiyat parçalamayan, yeni bir şey denemeyen, yaptığını iyi yapan bir roman. aylin ülçer’in tertemiz çevirisiyle.
israil hep dertmiş bu arada, dünden beri google’da 1946 bombalamasını okudum da…

Jewish Flora Baum was a teenager when the Germans invaded her home town, Paris, France. She tried to get her parents to see reason and to flee but her father was a stubborn man who believed that they would leave their family alone as he knew important people, how wrong he was.

Her mother was taken first followed by her father whilst Flora hid in the basement of local friends and then out in the country with a family. When the war ended Flora decided to travel to Palestine to live. From there she fell in love with a man who was not all he first seemed. From there she returned to Paris and then onto London where she married a Pianist.

Move forward to the 1980s and teenage Hannah Karalis lives in Notting Hill, London with her family. She longs to be a writer and is taken with her elderly neighbour Flora, that is until Flora ups and leaves without a trace one night.

The book moves forward again in time, this time by nineteen years and Hannah is left a box of books by her old friend Flora, her memoirs. The books are very intriguing, especially as they contain information on Flora’s remarkable life and details about Flora’s past that she had tried to forget about for many, many years.

Where to Find Me was a mixed bag for me. The plot was interesting and I adored both Flora and Hannah. However, the writing wasn’t to my liking. It was told in the first person, split into two sections and then again in two voices, Hannah’s and Flora’s. It moved back and forth in time and the sentences were very short so I never found there was any flow within the pages.

I did enjoy the historical element of the book which was realistic and informative. The later years were more about the intrigue of what Flora had written and how her words impacted on both of hers and Hannah’s lives in different ways.

This was one of those books that I plodded through at a slow pace rather than rushed through. I was captivated enough by the story to want to finish the book but the writing style made it a hard slog rather than an enjoyable read.

Göçmenlik, bir yere ait olmak ya da olamamak üzerine on yıllara yayılan, dilinin sadeliği ve çevirinin akıcılığıyla sürükleyip götüren bir roman.

2. Dünya Savaşında Fransızların Yahudilere tavrından İsrail’le Filistin çatışmasına söyleyecek sözlerini bu kolay okunan romanında yer vermiş yazar. Günümüzde göçmenlere bakış açısı, çok kültürlülük ve modern ırkçılığa gelinen nokta üzerine de düşündürmüyor değil.

Flora’nın kendi anlatısının yazılı olduğu bölümleri daha çok sevdim. Cesur olduğu anlarla da, hatalarıyla da, hayal kırıklıklarıyla da, duygusal ikilemleriyle de fena yazılmamış bir karakter. Hannah’nın bölümlerinde daha çok çocukluk ve ergenlik bölümlerini benimsedim. Flora’nın defterleriyle karşılaştığı yetişkinlik bölümlerinin o noktada olmasa bir eksiklik sayılmayacağını düşündüm okurken.

Flora’nın hikayesinde daha fazla derinleşmesini beklediğim, geçişlerin fazla çabuk yapıldığını düşündüğüm, bazı tesadüflerin fazla bestsellervari koktuğu anlar var ama genel olarak sevdim romanı ve gözüme batan yerleri çok da rahatsız etmedi. Tam da kitap okumakta zorluk çekinen dönemlere ilaç gibi gelecek romanlar arasında sayılabilir Eğer Beni Ararsan sadelikle çeşitli temaları birleştiren yapısıyla.

Akıl almaz acılara göğüs germiş, yağmurdan kaçarken doluya tutulan Flora ile Notting Hill’de tesadüflerle komşu olan Hannah’ın hikayeleri son zamanlarda okuduğum en yalın ve en akıcı kurgu oldu. Flora’nın savaştan kaçarken içine düştüğü ard arda gelen hataları dış dünyasını içten içe koparmış, tıpkı bir tel gibi kırıp O’nu ikiye ayırıyor. Yalnızlık tadına bakılıp daha sonra değerlendirmek üzere rafa kaldılmış bir yemek gibi bu romanda. Hannah’ın Flora’dan 50 yaş geriden gelen hayatı Flora’nın günlük notlarından daha farklı anlatılıyor. Sonuna kadar mücadelesi güçlü yanı. İki farklı anlatımın kusursuzluğuna bayıldım!
Çıkardığım sonuç tüm hayatımıza da mesaj bence;
travmalar kişinin içkin mekansal algısını ve yön duygusunu sarsan şey. Şayet kişinin yolunu/ yönünü tayin etmeye başlaması ise iyileşme belirtisinin ta kendisi. 5/5 ⭐️✨

Beautifully written and full of the significant historical events, this book is easy to read. There are many books written on the history of Jews in France during the Nazis occupation. This one takes one character who managed to survive the regime and follows her life history through the after war years up to the present days. The war left many scars and made a huge effect on the rest of her life.
I did not connect with any of the characters, but found the story line flowing. Mostly I liked the description of the atmosphere of the Palestine and Paris in the 50th and how the today's history was influenced by the events that happened long time ago.

Bir Filistin ve o bölgelerin romanı olarak bakma hatasına düşmemek lazım. Bir karşı taraf tutmuyor kitap, savaşların değişkenliğini anlatıyor günlük hayat ve ilgiler üzerinden ama orada konuşacak bin tane şey varken böyle bir kitap bana çok satan kitap dertleri gibi geliyor, hızlıca okudum, sevdiğim kısımları oldu ama basit bir edebiyattı. Bazen sadece mısır gevreği yersin sabah, bu (benim için) hiçbir zaman mükellef bi kahvaltının ve belki de sadece haşlanmış yumurta zeytinle bile yapılmış kahvaltının yerini tutmaz.

The book is divided into parts for either Flora or Hannah, the two main characters.
At first I found it slow and nearly stopped reading but before I knew it I couldn't put it down.
Flora's story touched me as to how much sorrow can one person endure especially the loss of her son.
But it is essentially a book which looks at how tragedy impacts on a personal level, how it can shape who they become; in a family situation it can fester and splinter the family unit and how the ramifications can still be felt for decades.

Best read of 2018

I have read many, many books on kindle and never felt the need to review or rate, however I found the narrative unfolded so skillfully that I read in one sitting. A moving, poignant and beautifully written book that deals with the most important questions life presents us with - I read this after a review in the evening standard, so glad I did,highly recommend!

Flora was a happy teenager until the Nazis took over Paris. As a Jew, she should have escaped when she had the opportunity, but her father had convinced himself the crisis would pass. When her mother and cousin were picked up because the child wasn’t wearing her yellow star, Flora went into hiding. Unlike her parents, she survived the war.

A rushed, distant narrative drains any emotion from the character’s life.

In the first 30 pages, the narrator details a life of segregation, humiliation, and ultimate disposal of Jews in Paris. However, these opening chapters barely scrape the intensity needed to tell this story — passing through months and years as if it’s a ‘previously on’ recap. The style is curt and unimaginative.

No reason to continue.

I picked this up because it was long-listed for the UK's 2020 Wingate Prize (awarded to the best books that "translate the idea of Jewishness to the general reader" - http://www.wingatefoundation.org.uk/l...). I read about 60 pages and lost interest. The story and characters just didn't grab me.

Beautifully written. Could not put it down. Arikha weaves tales of loss and tragedy caused by gullibility and good intentions. This story also speaks volumes about the dangerous aspects of unhealed trauma. I loved how diverse and deep the characters are, not many stories provide enough details for the reader to relate or like the people in a story, Arikha's an expert in that.
