Steve, Matt, and Jenny thought their detective skills would be given a rest when they agreed to be extras for a movie. Upon arriving at the movie site, the trio learns that someone has been breaking equipment and causing damage around the set. Determined to find the saboteur, the young detectives begin their investigation only to come face to face with the last thing in the world they expected-a ghost!

I had a whole wonderful review typed out, then my clumsy fingers hit the wrong key and *POOF,* review gone. So let me just state that this book was a terrific read that was very well written for mid-grade readers and adults alike. The plot was comprehensible without being overwhelming with added fluff and detail, the characters well defined (for a book for this age group) and the author had a definitive lesson to be learned about loyalty, friendship and generosity.
I would recommend this book for any reader 9 - 14 years old, as well as adults looking to reminisce about childhood adventures they experienced. Thank you, Ms. Arango, for the trip down memory lane.
You looking for an adventure book for your child or children to enjoy? Well, the series called “The Decoders” by Alba Arango is a good one. It seems to focus on helping others out but also doing what they love to do. Which is solve cases. I have rated it 4.5 Moons – (Stars).
It about three smart kids, how they have adventures. They seem to help their friends and family out. Though in this book it about “The Lady Ghost”. What is happening on the movie set? Why are they scaring people to leave? Is the ghost real or is it fake?
The plot is done well. The characters are developed well. Matt, Steve, and Jenny seem to have different skills that they use to solve mysteries. The stories and mysteries are different. They seem to find someone or a few that seem to help them out.
The adventures seem enjoyable. I enjoy each one. I love that the mysteries are entertaining but not overwhelmed. They are really good for middle graders and children. It one that children can read and fall in love with.
The author does a wonderful job of this and keeping it suitable for children. I just think the story could have been a bit more with the ghost and with movie set. It was a good read. I hope to able to read the next one. I want to read the other adventures of the decoders.
While part of the appeal of this series is that the main characters are twelve year olds who are given the freedom to explore and have adventures, this book had some major flaws in my opinion. The kids are allowed to be on a movie set in a remote location for an extended time with virtually no supervision. It would have been more believable and responsible if the kids had been invited to the set by a godparent or uncle/aunt or even an older sibling who would provide that supervision. Also, the last few chapters require suspension of belief regarding a treasure hunt, considering the treasure was buried a hundred years ago.
Even with these issues, this book and the series so far are highly recommended because the mysteries are fun and the kids are polite and mature. Perfect escapism for kids and kids at heart.
