Kade Cook is Supernatural fantasy fangirl. Her love of Twilight, The Mortal Instruments and ACOTAR inspired her to write her own fantasy book series, The Covenant of Shadows.
Book one, GREY, was Shortlisted for the 2017 Emerging Writer's Prize on June 27th for Canada's best new books in Speculative Fiction.
Born and raised as a NB 'Maritimer' from the East coast of Canada, Kade will always be at home around good times and kind hearts, proud to be a daydreamer with a story to tell. Rebirth, rejuvenation, and reunion. Kade Cook takes off where she left off in Calico with Silver. This is a book about transformation, Gabrian, the main character’s transformation. Unlike the first two novels that were more action-oriented, Silver is cerebral, as is Cook's elegant prose. When I read the closing passage to Silver, I sighed in awe. As my mom use to say when I got in trouble, “I can show you better than I can tell you.” Here: “Her eyes flutter, and he steps back into the Shadows. Torn whispers of his name cross over her lips, calling out to him as her consciousness consumes his familiar scent and pulls her deeper within the dream to chase after a boy with eyes the colour of the sea.”
The grand cast of characters are back, all except one, and a major theme emerges: forgiveness…in a big way, and not just forgiveness of others but forgiveness of self and that without forgiveness moving on and onward is difficult if not impossible. As a person of color, I’m always troubled by the preoccupation of authors to include diversity or multiculturalism in their work. Most don’t get it right. They either ignore it or even worse, are clumsy with it or heavy-handed. Cook gets it right. It occurs naturally in the novel as it does in real life with characters like Thomas and Ethan, and again, you have to experience her words. “A wave of energy shifts the room in a state of vertigo as he falls to his knees. His legs give in, unable to hold the weight of his heart and his desperate need for all of this to be real. Tears glisten over his ebony skin. Orroryn leans down and kisses Rachael. Their lips linger in a soft tender silent vow of forever.”
I love the growth of Grabrian in this installment from her Sinead O’ Conner hair to pixie cut to her new powers which I'll only say are wicked and won’t reveal here. The writing in Silver pulls you in, the story keeps you engrossed, and the characters keep you coming back for more. There are no cliffhangers at the end of Silver, thank goodness, but Kade Cook leaves no doubt that there is much more story to be told. Indeed, I was oddly satisfied, yet wanting more and waiting not-so-patiently for the next installment of the COS.
At the end of Calico #2, Rachel was in a coma whilst Gabe & Shane seemed they may be beyond reach forever!😢 Gabe is in fact in Eruberus but she's sent back after her powers are stripped from her in a painful & heart breaking scene, poor Ty!!😢 Once she is 'alive' again her body is withered, her hair mostly gone and her scalp scared plus her face is drawn, eye's deeply sunken, she looks monstrous!!😱
After days of pain & self pity she has an epiphany & decides it's time to claim her life back starting with her health. In a drastic & frankly weird decision, she avoids her Uncle Ty by leaving through her bedroom window😳 She sets out, one foot in front of the other, for a run, drastic but she's stubborn. She ends up at the beach some magical things occur & she's healed 🌊✨
Things progress quickly for Gabe and she's back in front of the Covenant of Shadow 's before she knows it!! The outcome is brilliant 😀🎉🔥
This is a much lighter read than the two previous books!👍 Gabe finally began to face things head on, mostly - thank god!!🙏💕 Old friends return & secrets are revealed! Unfortunately Shane doesn't return 😭😭 I look forward to book 4 to see if he comes out of the shadows but also to find out exactly what Adrinn is up to with Symone & whether Gabe reaches her potential. Will Cera ever return??😎 Another fab read!👍
Whilst this story centres on Gabrian’s rebirth and all the twists and turns that come about as part of this, there were other things simmering away in the background. As the story ends quickly, I’m going to go ahead and suggest there is another book coming to tie these all together. I do hope so! Perhaps because it has been a little while since I read the last book, I did find myself wishing to remember all the parts that are moving in the story and occasionally got a little lost, but I really enjoyed this and always get hooked in by author Cook’s writing style. The themes of forgiveness in the book were also lovely and heartfelt.
Wow, Kade Cook has done it again with another book in this great series. Gabrian is once again in the middle of everything and once again restricted in her movements. This is a great book with so many twists and turns, magic, humor, sarcasm, secrets and many great friendships. There are enough hints to make reading the next book a must do.
A well rounded third installment of Gabrian's journey. Sometimes I wish she could see more clearly the shady characters that are playing a role, but her lapses are understandable and not merely intended to move the storyline forward. I like the added (implied?) dimension of Adrinn... I do hope for some redemption, wish Symone had a larger part in this installment - I think she will be an excellent villain. I am eager to see what happens next!!
This book is amazing. At age 70, having read many books a year, I can say I’ve never read a book so fascinating and unique. I haven’t encountered another fantasy where the author has made such a huge change in a character, and had the story flow seamlessly. I’m in awe of this author.
