Be Chief : It's a Choice, Not a Title

Rate this book

Conventional wisdom about Chiefs and power is all wrong. It says Chiefs are special. Chiefs are chosen. Chiefs have titles. And only those at the top have the power to be Chief.?
But today, reports indicate that 7 in 10 workers are not giving 100% on the job. Why? Mostly, they feel powerless. Researchers estimate the cost of this lost productivity at over $500B annually.?
We need a new way to think about Chiefs and power, and we need new tools to create powerful organizations.
To Rick Miller, being Chief has nothing to do with position or title. And power has nothing to do with authority or control. Rather, Rick defines a Chief as anyone who fully and enthusiastically connects what they do to who they are, personally and professionally. Rick defines power in terms of the clarity, energy, and impact we can all choose to build. ?
Miller is a different kind of turnaround specialist who has led million- and billion-dollar organizations that have unlocked employee productivity, tripled growth rates, and delivered sustainable growth using a strategy to cultivate teams of powerful Chiefs. As a student-teacher and a player-coach Miller, shares strategies that work for Chiefs at all levels.

A standout amongst other “self-help” books

I really hesitate to put the “self-help” stamp on this book. I have read so many where it’s like “do this, and this happens.” Not this book. Be Chief is more about looking into yourself and finding the attributes to make yourself a chief in your current predicament instead of trying to rise up into a new situation. So often, we look to these types of books to make us into people that we’re not. The line that really spoke to me and reaffirmed this approach was when the author was discussing how what you do needs to align with who you are. There are a ton of good examples from the author’s past that speak toward this theory. Be Chief is the book that all other inspirational and influential novels inspire to be: less preachy, more resourceful. I would absolutely recommend this to others.

Approached with my usual skepticism of management books. I took a different tact and applied some of Rick’s lessons as they struck a cord with me rather than breezing through the entire book. I have to say it has been helpful in changing my attitude towards my employees in a positive manner. Rick asks succinct, thought provoking questions that provided an actionable plan. Honestly think my employees have noticed a change for the better as well. Thank you Rick

I really enjoyed this powerhouse read on leadership.
Being a Chief begins with our own attitude - a willingness to be deeply accountable for a team, an organization, a community. It requires a willingness to let go of the need to control or take care of others. Most leadership models are based on the idea of being "good parents" - helping subordinates grow, develop and accomplish their goals, rewarding their efforts and successes. It seems benevolent. However, it prevents people from becoming Chiefs of their organization. It is not possible to assume deep responsibility and accountability, and at the same time be dependent, expecting someone else to take care of you. Thank you, Rick Miller for sharing all you have learned and for sharing it with others. That is what Chiefs do!
