Teaching Adult Second Language Learners addresses the needs of adults studying English. It provides a useful summary of the principles involved in teaching adults as well as a wealth of activities specifically designed for adult learners. The text is divided into three sections: Section I provides an introduction to the adult language learner and discusses the issues of assessment/placement and course/lesson organization. Section II gives teachers techniques for building community in the classroom. Section III provides activities designed for students at various levels that are organized thematically around topics such as self-identification, food, clothing, and work.
This book has a great combination of teaching advice and teaching activities. Most of the activities are easily adaptable. It's also one of the few books on ESL/language teaching that effectively addresses the issue of teaching a multilevel classroom. I'd especially recommend it to people who teach adult beginners or intermediate-level students.
This book is a great teaching resource. Tons of lesson plans organized by themes such as family, food, housing, health, and work. Definitely more oriented toward survival English than academic, which is good for me since I've worked more in the latter than the former. Gives me some nice ideas.
A wonderful quick read on classroom techniques and already planned out lessons that you can adapt to fit your ESL class needs. The lessons have samples that you could use in your class or as templates for worksheets. I can't wait to use what I've read from this book in my classroom!
