This was another volume with chapters about books, and books fairs, too.

As mysterious Akira is, like her, we also want to know what's up with Masami. Earlier in the series, he descirbed himself as a burned out husk of man without ambition, but clearly that is incorrect. Deep down, he still harbors an ember of literary aspiration.

The words below contain spoilers for act two stuff of this series.

By now it's clear that the author is plotting this slice-of-life sort of romantic series considering each volume thematically isolated. Plenty of mirrored stuff, showing how different cast members deal with the same thematic issues. This volume is mostly about why some relationships are unable to develop, or unable to continue. As the kicker for this whole thematic display we have our lovely protagonist, the tall, elegant, former track runner until she suffered a career-ending injury, and who wears dangerously short skirts, Akira Tachibana, a seventeen year old high school student inexplicably in love with her forty five year old boss. This Akira person was lazing around at home when she read the notice about one of those public displays of books on the streets from different book shops. I don't recall how those things are called in English, nor in Spanish for that matter. In any case, her love interest is a failed writer and she knows he's really into books, so she invites him to go as friends, given that she's firmly in the friend zone at this point. They bond further through her interest for books and his passion for them, but most importantly, at a moment when she's gone to the bathroom, the guy is so absorbed in whatever he's checking out that he forgets about her. When they find each other again later on, he's ashamed that he abandoned her because his interest had overtaken him. However, to his surprise, she says something to the effect that anyone would be that absorbed in something they are passionate about (one guesses like she was about running, before she couldn't do it anymore). The boss clearly hadn't had understanding people like that in his life. Unfortunately it comes from a seventeen year old, who would be the love of his life if he weren't old already.

We learn much more about the college-age coworker of the protagonist who blackmailed her into a date a few volumes ago. We meet the guy's step sister, not related by blood, and as it tends to be the case whenever there's a sibling relationship in Japanese fiction and they aren't related by blood (and sometimes even if they are; I'm thinking now of that 2010 anime "My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute". Japan is a more sophisticated Alabama), the college-age dude is clearly in love with his step sister, but she's clueless about it. He found her drunk in his apartment, because her latest boyfriend had dumped her. The woman is a mess, and the author makes a point of repeating how clumsy she is. In any case, the guy's hopeless love does help humanize him, because he had been painted as a clear antagonist until now.

This college-age dude decides to go to some botanical exhibition with his sister, only to run into the protagonist, their boss, and the boss' kid. They end up tagging along for the day, to the dismay of the college-age dude. However, he opens up subtly to the protagonist that he pursues an impossible love of his own, but that he is hopeless about it. The protagonist understands that the guy isn't that bad, and that he even respects her for having the balls to keep pushing for what she wants even though it will probably never happen (nor should?).

We see more of a ditzy coworker of theirs who is in love with a classmate of the protagonist, who is however infatuated with the protagonist. The ditzy girl knows that this guy isn't looking at her, but she is emboldened by the protagonist's words that if someone wants something, they shouldn't settle for anything less.

The most important revelation happens when the boss sees that his college classmate, who is now a successful author, is appearing on TV. That prompts the sad and bitter protagonist to revisit the manuscripts he has stored over the years. We learn that his wife left him because he was single-mindedly pursuing his writing career, even though it led nowhere, and doing so obsessively, maybe to the extent of neglecting the wife. He's so distraught that he might have hurt the protagonist, by getting so absorbed in literature again that he lost sight of her for a good while at the beginning of the volume, that he apologizes for it, but she says that not only she's fine with it, but that she wants to see more of that passion of his. Clearly this boss guy had always felt like he should apologize to the people in his life for his passion for literature and writing, as if everyone else was waiting for him to come to his senses and drop it, but here's a lovely female who accepts that troublesome part of him. That's a recipe for love, and in the guy's glances at this seventeen year old for the remainder of the volume we see that he's fearing that as well.

Right at the end, one of the junior track runners of the protagonist's former team recognizes her in the restaurant as she's working. We get another example of how unable she is of dealing with the grief of losing her passion. She cuts the conversation short and hides. I'm guessing that her finally processing her pain is going to be one of the main psychological climaxes of this slice-of-life series.

A pleasant, kind-hearted, grounded read as usual, in contrast with the weird, mean-spirited, pretty cool anime I'm going through at the moment, "Gleipnir" (link to an early scene).

As enjoyable as ever... We get to know a little bit more about blackmail guy and the plot moves on, slowly, steadily and beautifully, as always

I'm am rooting for Yui-chan!! she's the cutest and I loved seeing more of her in that volume. She's a very fun and sweet character, a great friend and I want her to be happy :)
We finally get to know Kase's big secret and I KNEW IT!!! I knew he was acting the way he was because of some heartbreak. I really enjoyed seeing that side of him.
The recurring jokes about the little ugly good-luck trinkets are also very funny.
This series continues to blow my mind and I love it so much! And it makes me cry too...

There are moments of silence accompanied by such delicately expressive art that just blow me away with how evocative they are—such as when Tachibana chooses which letter she wants at the used book sale and Kondo reacts to its contents in silence with three consecutive panels detailing the minute changes in his facial expression as he reflects on what it means for her. It’s so delicate and beautiful.

Also, “It’s absurd to with I could be forgiven. I can’t even think like that. That’s obvious. But all this time…I wanted someone to say to me…’You’re fine the way you are.’” Kondo, I see you.

Son già a metà serie. SIGH!

Okay we are halfway through the series and it's a little hard to tell where we are going. This volume read as any in the middle Shojo romance where the girl is stepping up to show her love for the main lead. And the Manager is also starting to accept his position more as the male lead now? Wondering how this will all end.

Also these volumes reads soo quickly, it doesn't take many minutes to read one and they are quite addictive. The art is really doing it for me.

Gadis SMA menjalin c̶i̶n̶t̶a̶ pertemanan  dengan duda 45 tahun.

Manga ini masih slowly seperti halnya genre slice of life.
