One ancient Hindu deity maintains the balance between humans and vampires. One woman makes a life for herself after tragedy. One vampire is hell bent on keeping his city streets free of violent rogues. Where they intersect… …a journey begins. Lark’s life is strange. Vampires roam among us undetected, except by her. She learned the hard way to keep her curse to herself and run at the first sign of trouble. Meditation and yoga have been the core of her sanity as she sets down roots in the city she calls home. When she is suddenly backed into a corner, its fight-or-flight time, but a huge secret is lurking beneath her skin. One that will change the course of her life, forever. The time for running is over. But will the price of her new purpose be too high?
Jen Pretty is a well- known and prolific writer of smart urban fantasies. Her novels are character driven, witty, often violent, and with a liberal sprinkling of coarse language. Some of her books genre-hop into mythology, pulling characters and situations from a variety of sources. When not writing, Jen can be found in the barn with her horses, or knee-deep in the vegetable garden at her home in rural Ontario, Canada, which she shares with her husband, three children, and a white husky dog named Salt.
After reading the premise & realizing the goddess was not the typical Greek deity, I decided to give this a shot. To be honest I am not overly impressed with the human vessel or the goddess. The world building seems a bit thin but I’m willing to continue the series.
Durga, the Hindu Warrior Goddess, is a great idea for a series
Especially since it takes in modern times, and the Demons that she fights are Rogue Vampires. I appreciated the unique plot premise. The action scenes were good, and the dialogue was written well. First person POV. Strong language and violence, but no sexual scenes. The ending was ok for a first book in a series, wrapping up some things but leaving a teaser for the next installment.
This first book should have been longer in order to establish more World Building. All I really got was that most humans weren't aware of the Vampires, Witches, or Elves. There was a potential love triangle, but nothing progressed very much. The Heroine could have possessed a better personality. I'm not sure yet if I like her or not, since when she isn't being Durga, she has zero good traits. When she is Durga, the personality is pretty overbearing. And the two love interests are a bit inconsistent in their actions. Again, a longer book with more backbround would have helped with character depth on all of the main characters.
I have not read a book by Author Pretty before, but I am definitely adding them to my TBR pile.
This was an enjoyable book - the plot moved along at a swift pace, but slowed enough for character development and some good descriptive writing. The vampires as presented here are different from the standard stay in during the day, can't eat food sort and appear divided into the 'rogue' and 'don't kill humans' camps. A major reason for this is spelled out in the book and series title.
While there was some swearing in the book - definitely fitting the situations - overall I would recommend this book to a large variety of readers who enjoy Urban Fantasy, coming-into-abilities, and vampire themed books.
It is the first of the series, and I hope future books will delve more into the world construction and various magical types that Author Pretty created.
I received a free copy of this book and have chosen to review it.

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this book, and the suspense. It pulled me in straight away and the dialog is punchy. While the language is not literary and high brow, the author crafted the kind of live-in-the-shadows, no-nonsense type of characters I appreciate, plus a very compelling, page-turning story. I'm going back for more in the series!
I absolutely loved this book and read it in one sitting aka an all nighter! Totally different vampire story that I seriously couldn't put it down! Vampires , witches , warlocks and a Durga! Find out what a Durga is,you will not be disappointed! Jones Pretty Kudos! I'm definitely a fan! On to book two!
This is most definitely not your average Vampire book!! It is s much more with a lot of unusual action, I promise, it will be one of the best books you will read! The book will be well worth your time.
