One’s a cyborg with a bad attitude, the other’s a cold-blooded reptile. They’re happily married. They’ve been hired by a mysterious contact to bag an ultra-deadly monster from the heart of an ancient temple. For “mysterious contact” read DOCTOR APHRA, who — and this will shock you — is definitely up to something. For “happily married” read THIS IS GOING TO GET MESSY.
Doctor Aphra is up to her usual self. Betraying folks, manipulation, deceit, hunting for artifacts in an evil-Han solo/female version of space-Indiana Jones, as well as a typical twist at the end as expected/per usual.
One of the oddest things about this comic is an interspecies romance between a male human and a female Trandoshian. This human-to-alien romance is presented well, as they genuinely act like a typical couple and being fair the author did a good job with such a strange and challenging presentation. Trying my best not to go down a rabbit hole of thought when it comes to the biological considerations between human and space-lizard... it is a super strange couple... I should just leave it at that...
But ya, good Doctor Aphra here. Excited to switch back over to the main 2019 line of her comics and keep pushing towards the finish line of 40/40!
More of this! As I read Remastered and Catastrophe Con I began to miss Gillen's writing but here Spurrier shows his craft. Great original characters (remind me of travelers from Zelda), an intriguing setup, a beautiful planet. Of course this is all in part to Caspar Wijngaard's artwork. Incredible colours, expressions, and clarity of story. (More Caspar and Luke Ross plssss)
Anyway this story made me realize that stale characters like Tolvan, Sana, and most certainly the murder droids are holding the Aphra series back. Onto the Adventures of Nokk!
Well, this annual is a fine short story, standing aside from mainline (like proper annual). It's funny, Indiana Jones-ish one shot with good Old Aphra without some interesting or strong punchline. If you enjoy Aphra as I do, you will enjoy this. [But this didn't change my opinion that Aphra as the main character (and her current series) should end soon. The story was fine, but now every issue is just adulteration.]
I always say annuals are the best, but they really just are. In this one Aphra is on an adventure, the kind that you might get at the start of an Indiana Jones movie and it plays out in an interesting way too that makes you chuckle in the end. Also, I love the two characters that they introduce and I would love to see them come around again.
The married couple was somewhat interesting, but I wasn't as interested in this story as I wish I was. And I wish we knew when it takes place in relation to the comic series.

That was a lot of fun! Exactly in the right atmosphere for the character. I think I even enjoyed it more than the series, because it was less convoluted.
У цій короткій історії Афра розкривається дуже яскраво і так, як треба. Мисливцям на монстрів ще доведеться пізнати її підступність, але й вона не те щоб завжди отримує бажане. Радше, навпаки.
